I just bought a new Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II. Gosh, I love how it feels in my hands! I can't seem to get my new 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens to fit on it though. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Is that lens an EFS lens? If so, it won't fit your camera. The EFS lens are built for the cameras that do not have full frame sensors, such as your camera. So...check to make sure your lens isn't an EFS lens. You will need just plain ol' EF lenses for your camera so any lense that is an EF model will fit.
BTW...Congrats on your wonderful new camera! You have yourself a gem there!;)

What's so funny?
As a long time Nikon user, I'm really looking forward to joining the Canon clan. The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II is quite a step up from my Nikon 4300. I just want to start taking photos. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong with my lens.

EF-S, EF...what's the difference?

i will be nice and asssume that you are serious here. what you are doing wrong is trying to put a lens that is designed for crop sensor camera or your full frame camera. it doesn't fit because the mount is different and you should be thankfull because if it did fit, it would have messed up your camera because your mirror would have hit the rear element of the lens...

EF-S, EF...what's the difference?
Hawg.....i think the reason people are so confused is because this the the type of question we expect from the Rebel XT user....not someone with a camera like yours!
if im wrong tell me....im definatly not a pro
EF is for any canon camera
EF-S is for Rebel XT, 20D, 30D (any camera without a full sensor)

Hmmm...I didn't think it made much of a difference. Well, after blowing all of this money on this awesome camera I don't have much left in my budget. Does anyone else know of a comparable lens for around $200 to $300?

sell that crappy lens and get yourself a 50mm 1.4 prime for now..
learn to use it then worry about new lenses.... or just get a 30d and a few L lenses
edit: sell the "awsome camera" and get a 1dmkII, 24-70 f2.8, and a 70-200 f2.8, you'll be much happier and all your problems are solved

the bad thing about the camera you bought is the fact that it will out resolve most lenses out there and will actually look most consumer lenses look like crap. my advice, save like $300 more and buy the canon 17-40L.
just curious, what made you get this camera??

the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM is a pretty good overall lens for general shooting
its about $230

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. ...sounds to me like a little more research should have taken place prior to this purchase eh? Man, you have an AWESOME body that you're talking about finding a budget lens to stick on it.

don't do this.. it's like buying an alienware (camera) and running msdos (lens)... your lenses should equal the value of the camera or be worth more (in my case, lenses outprice camera 2:1)

just the thought of the 1DsmkII mated to the crappy kit lens gives me the creeps :)

Why this camera?
I wanted the best camera money could buy. I want to take great snapshots of family and friends. Plus this one is 16.7 megapixels. My Nikon 4300 was only about 6 megapixels. I'm going to go back to the store and yell at the guy for selling me this stupid lens. I'll have to try something else. Just as soon as I get a new lens tomorrow I will post some photographs of my cat!
Thanks for your help.

ok, this might sound harsh but it is not meant to be:
1) you really need to do some research and maybe return this camera.
2) the camera is only as good as the glass in front of it which in your case means that you would be better off with a 30D and a nice glass..
3) why would you want 16.7mp for snap shots of the family?
4) how many memory cards did you buy? you will need at LEAST 2-4gb with this camera..

I am probably going to tick everybody off here, but I would give the guy the benefit of the doubt. I think everyone seems a little harsh.

I think he might be serious and here's why. Last week I was in a camera store (not to be named), there was a gentlemen returning his sony P&S due to the lack of quality in his pictures. He was shown a 30D, with a beautiful "L" lens. He walked around and shot everything he could see, said Yes, then they guy told him it did not come with a lens. The gentleman said he only had $1700 total to spend, so the salesmen picked out a "set" of 2 non-canon lenses for this guy. The "SET" was less than $300.00. they had to be crap! And they never put these lenses on the camera. This poor guy is going home with a beautiful piece of equipment and two inferior lenses to shoot with, and doesn't even know if they will fit his camera.
This could be a serious thread!

I saw this thread last night and immediately thought "Troll." Revisiting it this morning, though, I'm not so sure. But if it's not a joke or a troll, then the sales person at the camera store should be taken out and summarily shot (figuratively, of course - maybe forced to read the entire EOS Flash Bible would be more appropriate). It will be interesting to see if Hawg returns and posts some photos (and we can see the EXIF data).

I don't think it was a troll... I just think it was a noob camera salesman coupled with an uninformed shopper.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn's sound like the buyer knew too much beforehand and just asked to buy "a really nice outfit" and the guy behind the counter just started pulling boxes off the shelf.

There are eBay sellers that list 1DsII bodies and 18-55EF-S lenses as a "kit".
Stranger things have happened.

I hope, if it is true, that he decided to trade down to a 30D and get some good glass. That would be more than enough camera and he could learn how it works.
I think he got hooked up with a salesperson who works on commision!
