I was about 45 minutes away from the airport and saw this 747 passing overhead. With only 380mm, I was able to fill 3/4 of the frame. I have no idea what it's altitude was, but it must have been fairly low. Unfortunately, it was a hazy day and I had to boost the contrast & saturation like mad on this one (and I probably over did it).:)
Anyway, it's my first shot of an aircraft.

I don't think you overdid it.. but dang, that's a low height for an aircraft that bit isn't it?

IF you think that's low, check out this link on Airliners.net (http://http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=0201517&WxsIERv=Obrvat%20747-228OZ&Wm=0&WdsYXMg=Nve%20Senapr&QtODMg=Cuvyvcfohet%20%2F%20Fg.%20Znnegra%20-%20Cevaprff%20Whyvnan%20%28FKZ%20%2F%20GAPZ%29&ERDLTkt=Argureynaqf%20Nagvyyrf&ktODMp=Bpgbore%2028%2C%202001&BP=0&WNEb25u=Whfgva%20Prqreubyz&xsIERvdWdsY=S-OCIL&MgTUQtODMgKE=Guvf%20bar%20jnf%20ZHPU%20ybjre%20gun a%20nalguvat%20ryfr%20gung%20pnzr%20va%20juvyr%20j r%20jrer%20urer.%20Gur%20crefba%20va%20gur%20juvgr %20fuveg%20whfg%20haqre%20gur%20abfr%20jurry%20vf% 20Puevf%20Jryql%20%3Cn%20uers%3Duggc%3A%2F%2Fjjj.n veyvaref.arg%2Ffrnepu%2Fcubgb.frnepu%3Fvq%3D199562 %3Efrr%20vg%20sebz%20uvf%20natyr%3C%2Fn%3E&YXMgTUQtODMgKERD=540738&NEb25uZWxs=2001-11-14%2000%3A00%3A00&ODJ9dvCE=&O89Dcjdg=21745%2F370&static=yes&width=951&height=636&sok=%20BEQRE%20OL%20ivrjf%20qrfp&photo_nr=13&prev_id=0034372&next_id=0131660)
Taken at St. Maarten, an airport renowned for looooow approaches! (no - not one of my shots - wish it was :D )

Good shot.
As for explanation... well it maybe low enough for an approach but its obviously not "wheels down" scenario.
OTOH it could be nothing much going on at all. it was maybe just an empty plane getting a test flight/good 'ol lap 'round the block by the mechanics after they serviced it. The owner will never know unless they noted the mileage when they parked it in the servicing shed.

Great catch Rumjungle - like your watermark too - nice and subtle - how did you do it?

Thanks for the comments, everyone. This was taken at a friend's house about 25 miles NE of LAX.

In PS, I added a light grey colored text layer and then reduced the opacity to around 15 or 20 percent.
