Is it me or are these kit lens archive shots looking better than the 17-55 ($1000) lens archive thread, lol?!
Better lens does not automatically mean better results. I find when I use my kit lens, I have to pay more attention to get the results I am looking for.
Yup, as long as you know the lens' limitations and use it towards its strengths, it is capable of producing some amazing images.
I think it may be the best value in Canon lenses honestly. An 18-55 zoom for $55 (What I paid for mine here on the forums) that is pretty darn capable when used correctly. Sounds like a steal to me.

tbisaacs: I am sorry to say i dont believe that came from the kit lens. I don't mean to offend you or anything, in fact this shuold be a compliment, but that dog pic is to crisp and clear and colorfoul to be from a kit lens. Maybe it came from your fifty?
Hard to shoot at 18mm with a 50mm prime.

To the side of the image in Photobucket you will find four codes. Use the IMG Code, copy and paste into your post.

IMHO it has far more to do with what's in front of the lens and what's behind the lens than the lens itself.

IMO... This is very true. The 18-55 is a consumer grade lens on a consumer, or pro-sumer grade camera. It allows folks like me who can not afford a 17-85 IS as a starter lens. It's a entry level lens designed and marketed to entry level people. Besides that if you have a lens that costs $500 and the conditions are not the best you will miss some shots. On the other hand if you have a lens that you can get for less than $100 dollars, you would be more willing to risk it. :):):)

Hi guys!
I'm was planning on replacing my kit-lens with the Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8.
I'm a little less frantic about it now I've seen some of the pictures here.
I was kind of surprised that I took these with my kit lens as well in Nicaragua last year. Thought I used my Tamron 55-200mm for these, but apparently not.
(minor tweaks like levels and contrast have been applied)

Well, as my first post I will ATTEMPT to contribute something (even though my fiance is laughing at my photo). I only had my Rebel XTi or as some call it the 400D for about a few weeks now. I figured I would go with this camera because 1.my very little knowledge about DSLR's and photography and 2. my budget. I took this photo of my wedding ring like 2 minutes ago. I guess it's sharp, just needs a little more light (from my own perspective). It's pretty obvious I'm an amateur. Any criticism or tips is much appreciated. :)

I'm enjoying this thread. It's so easy for noob photographers like me to read threads where people knock this lens or threads where people talk about all the L glass they are getting. Not that there is anything wrong with that (more power to them) but it can give us rank amateurs the wrong impression. When you see that good pics can be done with this lens, it makes you realize photography has more to do with the photographer than the equipment. I need to be reminded of that once in awhile!:)
Gosh this is so true! Thanks for writing this. You just made me feel 100% better about my kit lens!

Hi folks...
Great posts here...
I really need some QUICK help....PLEASE
I need a CRASH course with my kit lens as I'm off in a few days to AFRICA...
I wasn't planning on bringing this kit lens because I was only taking my 70-200mm f/4 IS but now I feel I should bring it along for some candids and some landscape images as well...I don't know what I was thinking...Oh well!...
Where does this lens perform its BEST???
f/8 - f11?
What about focal length,,,where is it sharp along its ZOOM?
I'm gone in a few days and I'm in a panick because I've never ever shot my kit lens before...
Your help and advice to make this lens work for me would be much appreciated in LANDSCAPE IMAGES and CANDID PORTRAITS...
Can any of my fellow members come to my rescue...Sorry for putting everyone on the spot but this is a mayday, mayday, mayday...rescue call!!!!
What are your experiences?
I'll have a monopod along with me...
Thank you!

Click on the blur index here (http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/137/cat/11)and you can play with the length and aperture and see how it performs.

Photobucket both resizes the image and saves it as a much lower JPEG quality. From what I've seen, PB usually saves it around 15-30 on a scale of 100, thus, you will loose a lot of 'pop' in most photos.

The 18-55 really isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Yeah, it's a little soft and has it's problems, but is definately a consumer capable lens. Here's a couple shots off the old 350d:

First post alert
Hope I get the embedding working within the rules.
First shot was taken in a park outside a small village in Ireland, camera (eos 400d) was left on landscape, and auto focus seemed to pick the nearest set of trees as the focus point. So I won't take credit for the technical bits, although I reckon I did a good job of framing it :D
C&C welcome (I'm new to this so the more the better)
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2334/2668048623_4874f4afcd_b.jpg
This 2nd shot was taken a day after I tried the kit lens in low light and was a bit disappointed with its performance (and mine). I was thinking of doing a self-portrait and figured it would be worth trying to get something out of the lense. This was all taken in M mode, and the high ISO noise was intended as a feature of the photo.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3041/2668798728_9a914cb96c_b.jpg
C&C welcome again.
My 2 cents(€) is that its a good versitile lens but does not excel at anything, but its a good starter as you need to learn to get the most out of it, and in the meantime as a P&S lens it works great, until you move on.
It gives you enough info to learn about the photos you want to take, and what lens to get next. If your already well versed in photography you'll probably hate it though.
P.S. this is the 2nd version of this lens without IS
