Awesome pics!
Plz tell me they were photoshopped to hell :D
Thinking of taking the plunge and going dSLR from my G2. The exif data that some people post with each shot is really handy for a total noob to digi photo like me (well I've actually had my G2 for 6yrs but it was usually on the green square setting )
It's the lens specs that baffle me at the mo.... I though a 50-300mm one would mean a good zoom and so a good lens.....shows how much I've gotta learn though after reading various reviews on lenses, it's deffo not that simple is it?
But when I see that results can be achieved like the samples in this thread with the kit lens, I think I'll get the zoom lens later after I've bought my XSi/450D and know 'what's what' a bit better......

Rex, as you have seen, the 18-55 is certainly capable of creating very nice images.
The difference in this lens and say the 55-250 IS lens is the field of view it will give you. The 18-55 will allow you to get more of what you see in the frame of the photograph. For distant subject, the 55-250 will allow you to get "closer". For an only lens, in most situations, the 18-55 would most likely be more useful.
I could go on, but others here have already said it much better than I ever could.
There are many stickies at the top of the lens section that do a great job of explaining the puzzle that is lenses for DSLR's.

Taken through my landing window, standing about 8 feet away from it. And a 100% crop of the bulldozer. not my 'best' but i was pleased to see the bulldozer resolve decently for a "el-cheapo" lens.
Whoo, Calgary!!
I'm so glad I found this thread, everything I've read online about the kit lens has been that its crap, now I don't feel so bad about using it. (And not being able to afford a nice replacement at the moment! :P) I'm still going to get a nifty fifty in a couple weeks, but tons of these photos are amazing. :D

Hi all,
I'm still new to DSLR photography but I have a 450D DR XSi with this kit lens.
After a few AF hiccups with the 9point metering settings (now set to centre point focusing) giving me front focusing issues. I have learnt how to control, and really get to like this lens! I have been testing MF + hand held lately and I'm really impressed with the results!
I have them on another thread here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=548645)
Canon's are definitely one amazing camera!

Original is surprising sharp. Shame I got rid of it really, it was very convenient.
Great shot...but your dog looks very unhappy! It's amazing what weather our pets have to put up with in London!!
I'm enjoying this thread. It's so easy for noob photographers like me to read threads where people knock this lens or threads where people talk about all the L glass they are getting. Not that there is anything wrong with that (more power to them) but it can give us rank amateurs the wrong impression. When you see that good pics can be done with this lens, it makes you realize photography has more to do with the photographer than the equipment. I need to be reminded of that once in awhile!:)
Yes, I agree. IMHO it's a great first lens, especially if you have a half-decent copy and you use it in its sweet spot - around f8 - the pictures turn out great.
But I'm getting ready to buy my first new lens (Canon 100mm macro)...maybe I may change my opinion after using that!

Lotta great stuff in this thread. Just goes to show ya that it's the photographer that counts, not whether or not the lens has a red band around the end. One of my lenses is an L and I produce pretty much nothing but crap with it. It's a great lens... I suck.

16th of September 2008 (Tue), 02:30
Spelunker, not at all!
I used only Lightroom for this edit
1) Clarity: boost this up all the way since it will bring out the lines in the hands, giving it that aged rugged look
2) white balance: Adjust it so that it favors a slight blueish tinge.
3) Sat/Vibrancy: move these down a bit so that it gives it an aged feel
4) Selective saturation: Bring up the saturation to your blues to make the blueberries pop, but not out of the realm of reality
5) shadow/highlight colors: In this slider at the bottom you can adjust the colors of the shadows and highlights. I slightly made the highlights an orange tone. I made my shadows a cool blue tone and put the saturation for both around 10%
6) Lens Vinegetting: Put it to -100 with the midpoint to 58
7) Contrast: Bring more contrast to this picture so that it increases the detail
8.) Exposure: After all is said and done, you'll notice it's still a bit dark, bring the exposure up just one notch.
And finally, eye it so that it's how you want, or edit however you want to if it turns out different than expected.
Hope that helps!

Here's a couple I took last night. I felt like traveling light, so I brought the "kit" lens and my 35 f/2. Used the "kit" until it got too dark then switched to the 35 f/2.
It's really not THAT bad of a lens. It's super light weight, and if you keep the aperture between f/5.6 and f/11, maybe f/16, then it can really be sharp and get decent color. It's size and weight more than compensate for it's defects wide open. I just wish the front element wouldn't rotate so I could use a CP Filter.

I've never understood why this lens get such a bad rep here. Most likely because of L itch but when I had mine for a few days (I returned the XT) I found it incredibly sharp. Like look at this picture of my dads eye, if that's not sharp then I don't know what is!
No offence to your Dad, but if you cropped that eye out and put a red/orange tinge to it, you can pass it off as the Eye of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings.

So how close to something does 18mm let you get to something-say a car for example? the 50mm is my widest lens and I am suffereing, having to walk back miles to get the whole of my subject in shot, weather it be a monument or tree...

also all the lines in this picture made it hard to work out what was straight and what wasnt.

Sorry for the late reply, to anyone who is still interested:
in LR, bring down the saturation and up the vibrancy
make your shadows dark green and your highlights a tad of yellow
up the vignetting and once you do you will notice your picture get darker, bring up the exposure so it's properly exposed so it will get you that center focus
import to p.s. and dodge the highlights just a bit and burn the midtones slightly

Exactly, the only limiting factor in a great image is the photographer and the subject.
