Two photos from yesterday, both taken with the kit lens and a 350d (Rebel XT). Who says you need expensive kit to get nice sharp photos?

Thanks - Jo posted them on my behalf - I think it is definitely the shutter speed that makes all the difference with the kit lens.

This is my first post! So far I have learned a LOT from POTN, you guys definitely know your stuff! I just purchased a used Canon Rebel Xti a little over a week ago and so far I love it. At the moment the kit lens is all I have, I do have a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS on the way though. :D

The first pic is my son Trent, the others were just random pictures I took today. The EXIF information is included and there is some pp work done.

I am a total noob to photography but I think these cam out ok.

Temperatures shouldn't be a big concern, I have ventured out in -15C temperatures without any issues, except for battery life.

Hello, this is my first post on a photography forum!
I recently bought a 350D with this lens, have used nikon in the past, but not for long, here some shots :
All hand-held with the 18-55mm lens on a 350D, I love the lens, its amazing for the price, don't know why people compare it to something 5 times its price, and even then it matches up nicely.

I tried to set the camera onto something as much as I could, as I didn't have a tripod. Also, some were black and whited, and increased brightness and contrast.

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4524/img71002copy.jpg

This one was taken without a tripod at night, was very sharp considering I didn't have a tripod, I set the camera on a side post.

The lens has its flaws, but I learned to live with them. The thing I miss the most, is some extra focal range. That's why I'm thinking of buying the Sigma 10-20 sometime this month.

Most of my pictures are taken with the 18-55. I have some more on my Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tjintjelaar/

Funny, I just popped on the old kit lens from the 300D and took a couple of pics tonight, just to see if I could talk myself out of a more expensive lens to upgrade some of that focal range. Subjects aren't much, but the jury is still out on whether or not I can make do for now.

I was very, very close to the minimum focus distance (ie. several inches from the subjects). This makes the background very far away in relation.

Shutter Speed: 1.3sec
Lens Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 30mm
ISO Speed: ISO400

I set the camera on a rock and used the self timer :p

If you have the kit lens that comes with the 450D, then you do not have the lens described in this thread. You have the version with IS (image stabilization):

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=445986

I now use that lens. You can see a waterfall shot taken using the IS version of the lens here:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=7851929&postcount=367

EXIF for that one:

Shutter Speed: 1/10sec
Lens Aperture: f/16
Focal Length: 18mm
ISO Speed: ISO100

It was a bright day so I had to stop down and shoot at ISO100 to get any relatively slow shutter speed. With IS turned on I had no problem hand holding this shot.

It's the basic 400D kit lens right? No thrills, just a good starter to get you round.

Yeah, the build quality isn´t impressive and the zoom ring is anything but smooth, but I'm pretty happy with it and I'm glad I bought it together with my 30D (which has been in used in these shots as well)

The first couple of shots are available in larger resolution for the pixel peepers ;) Just click for the album, then click [sizes] for higher resolution shots.

Have to say that so far so good (I have the camera only 3 days though...) and it's also my first SLR!
I know this pic isn't anything amazing, but I'm trying to do my best :D

Took this lens to the Upper Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona this past May 2009.
This is hand held, no tripod:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2128/3560596791_5f89c5cd59.jpg

With the amount of people packed into that place, I just gave up on the tripod. Kneeled down in the front of everyone with tripods to be out of their way, held my breath and shot.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3661/3589867951_e2cae2084d.jpg

I currently use ONLY the kit lens for all of my studio work also:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2676/4181812700_760e544128.jpg

just wanted to add: all photos shot with the 50D and the original kit lens, the 18-55 non-is. This kit lens is from my old ElanII 35mm film camera, so this is an old kit lens!

Its always interesting to see what people can do with this lens since it tends to be maligned. Some processing does help with bad qualities of the lens (mainly lack of contrast and pop) but someone who has learned to Post Process somewhat, I'm happy I can live with this lens (for now!). It gets the job done.

I didn't know Kenko tubes were compatible with EF-S mount.

The Kenko Tubes have a red AND white dot on the mount, so I figured that they were. :p

however, you can obtain a higher magnification as well as keeping a slightly longer working distance by reversing your lens at 18mm- about 3:1 i believe. Just take off your lens and hold it in front of your camera backwards :)

I've tried that  Hard to get the focus right!

Not bad for a $40 purchase. Mono lake and the Grand Canyon

Is the USM IQ different? I had the version II, non-USM...

Still got some great shots out of it in its "sweet spot"... :D

Yeah, the USM one is supposedly significantly better, IQ-wise.

I am sort of feeling like the XTi + kit lens is my very fancy Holga....

Earlier posts say it's the non-USM version, did the title change?

I think I've posted here but back when it was the non-USM thread... I'm confused...

I'm confused as well... I have the non-USM version and thought I was posting in the non-USM thread.... dunno if something changed, or if I've just been posting in the wrong thread... ???

I dunno. I think you may be thinking of the comments where they say it's the non-IS version, since the IS version is a comparatively new design that has noticeably better optics.

This thread is for the non-IS version. I didn't think there were optical differences between the USM and non-USM version of the 18-55 (non-IS) lens, but I've never compared them directly so I wouldn't know...

These are some of my first shots, I just got a hold of a 1000D/xs. I'm just surprised how easy it is to work with an SLR compared to the point-and-shoot.

P.S. Sorry for the picture quality reduction, but I seem to have a problem registering at photobucket... Also, as I am not sure which thread is which - what I have is a non-IS 18-55 lens, and I am satisfied with it, although it is a really slow lens, and non-tripod or flash low light shots are impossible.

I've since added some lenses to my collection, but have had some GREAT results with this lens! As has been said, it's all about how it is used!

Recently had to do a group shot in studio (on location) and the only lens I had that was wide enough was my kit. Pulled it out, set the aperture to f11 and with my strobes this was the result! Not too shabby for a kit lens!!
