This lens is ok with a flash indoors [Vivitar 285HV bounced off ceiling]. I still have yet to upgrade my normal range. I'm thinking of an EF 28 1.8 in the near future.

Been going back over some of my images from when I was first learning about shooting RAW and realized they're not ALL as bad as I thought now that I (sort of) understand what to do with them.

http://www.shawnreap.net/pics/OrangeFrog.jpg

http://shawnreap.net/pics/DragonFlyFlowers.jpg

It just sat in my bag for years after I got my 28-105 and "Nifty 50" as I believed it to be inferior. I pulled it out for kicks and giggles while hanging out with family after Christmas. As others have noted, it does ok around f8 (and in this case with an external flash):

My son Alex & his grandma:
http://shawnreap.net/pics/IMG_4855.jpg

And his fraternal twin, Colin:
http://shawnreap.net/pics/IMG_4858.jpg

Just minor work in DPP (a nudge here and there on exposure, contrast, etc) and a resize in Photoshop. If I wanted "straight out of camera" I'd go back to green box mode or my Kodak P&S.

So it's not professional grade... neither am I. It's not bad for the money, as others have stated.

The kit lens that came with my 40D was the 17-85mm IS USM so the 18-55mm is very new to me. I picked up a cheap second-hand one recently and found that although it doesn't seem to want to AF at the 55mm end it seems OK otherwise. It's very early days so I haven't produced anything particularly good with it, but here are a couple I took with a Merkury Optics wide-angle lens on the front of the 18-55mm. I originally bought the Merkury to play around with my old Canon S3 but was delighted to find that the 18-55mm has a 58mm front thread. Even better, the Merkury comes in two parts and you can use the back part on its own as a macro lens so I'll have even more fun playing with that.

By the way, there are some fantastic photos in this thread showing that the 18-55mm non-IS kit lens is well up to the job in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing.

WOW......I was ready to give up on the little tacker!!!!!

With all the negative comments I get form pros who bag the crappers out of the 18-55mm....this thread really does show that in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing that some really impressive images can be taken.

I must admit if I didn't know from the title, I would swear that some of the images came from a $2000 L SERIES attached to a 1D

Absolutely great work people, you have made me change my mind in ditching the little lens and working with it more now.

Thanks

Very similar comments have been made about it's big brother the 55-250, ignore them. For the money, these two lenses are the best that can be purchased today.;)

A few months back, my camera took a tumble with the kit lens attached and well, the kit lens didn't make it out of that one so pretty. Yesterday, I got the idea to chop it to pieces and turn it into a Macro lens since I've never really tried out macro to be honest.

No PP other than some cropping. Still getting used to it, but the thing jams at anything other than wide open so all shots are at f3.5.

New photographer here -- just got a Rebel XT with this lens about a month ago. Here are my favorite shots so far:

Don't understand why my kit lense can't produce these excellent images. :(

unless there is something wrong with your lens (which is unlikely), your lens can produce the same images...This lens needs lots of light -meaning it is going to produce the best images outside in good daylight. That said, this lens can do nice work in low light or even at night (as you can see in this thread) but you really need to know what you're doing. Finally, as a daily user of Photoshop, I can tell you that a good deal of the photos in here have post processing (vignette, sharpening, etc). I use this lens professionally since it's my only wide angle lens (my others are primes or tele)

Hey Mike, just wanted to give you the thumbs up for starting this thread. While many of us have moved on to "better" lenses than the kit, it's inspiring to see what can be done with the right talent.

With musical instruments (guitar from my experience) a great musician can make a pawn shop guitar sound just as good as a $3000 instrument, it's all in the hands. :)
Yes, I second that. I did not get my camera yet (it's on the way) and I got it with the kit lens and also got the 50 mm f1.8 II. It might be a while until I can afford to get better lenses and those I will award myself with only if I can take good shots with the lens kits.
It is good to see that is not impossible to take good pictures with Kit glass.
