Hope you don't mind, I spent 60 seconds in PS - it comes out very nicely:

1/160 @ F/9.0 ISO100 +0.7 stops, 55mm.

I took this a few days ago. Handheld, just a 1A filter on it. I PP'd out an errant bud, but otherwise the image is untouched.

FWIW, I don't mind the lens. I would prefer it to be a little longer for general use (and am looking into a 17-85). My big gripe with it is that it seems awfully prone to lens flare, and my Canon hood is too narrow for it. (any hints? I think my hood is an EF-60).

me too! 55mm just is too short. I'm always at max zoom it feels. I'm looking into the 100-300mm USM. I like to zoooooooom!

There are many methods but one of the most used here is a script written by POTN member mickle. Here is the link to his thread:

there u go all fixed, i thought in lens tests and what not u were allowed to post wtv size u want? No. We're a little looser on number of images for equipment test posts, but 800 pixels max. is an absolute dimension - check the image posting rules in my sig.

I was trying to take some water drop pictures. I filled a blue bucket with water and began. My daughter loves water and kept sticking her hands in the bucket. Needless to say, I did not get any good water drop pictures.

After I finished, my daughter kept playing in the water. It was about 2 hours before sunset. I turned her so she was facing west and starting snapping pictures when she stood up. Here's one of my favorites.

This was taken with the kit-lens near the full zoom (55mm) at f/5.6. There is no post processing as I don’t have Photoshop, and I’m just learning to use the PhotoStudio program that came with the camera.

Thanks! While the kit lens is cheap, it can produce some wonderful images when used correctly, same goes with everything though I'd imagine, the kit lens just has more limits to it...

I still have my kit lens with my DRebel, and it works great for a wide angle when I need to use one (of course, with the 5D, the kit lens and my Tamron are the same width on the diffrent bodies, one can guess which gets more use  )

Got my 30D last week and can't put it down, the kit lens has really surprised me thus far, only complaints are, CA and not being all that great in low light, build quality could be better yes, but if your careful and aren't "horsing around" it should be more than fine, it is for me at least, so yeah needless to say I can live with the build quality for a while.

Here's a few of my best shots with it so far:

I've had my 300D for over a year and have ~9500 shots on it, the majority of which were with the kit lens. Main reason for this is monetary, of course, but I have gotten some good results with it, being sure to use a tripod and f/8 whenever possible... and of course some PP in Photoshop for contrast, saturation and sharpness. ;)

Hi, i'm new to these forums. I was searching on Google for user posted images of the Canon EOS 350D using the kit lens and found this.

I just want to say this is a great thread. I've been fighting over myself about whether or not to get the kit lens with 350D, which i'll be buying hopefully (please!) in 4-5 weeks. Looking at the images i can see i don't need to worry to much, as it looks like a good enough starter lens for me (i'm entirely new to SLR's).

I'm also considering getting the 50mm f/1.8 lens as well, since it's so cheap and because i've heard good things about it's image quality, even if it's casing is a bit crap.

Do any of you have any tips or anything you'd might be able to give me for when i get started?

Thanks.

Get the kit lens, and the 50mm f1.8 to start. It won't cost you a bundle, and it will cover a lot of the shots you will probably take to start. The 50mm is a nice, fast lens so you will be able to get some decent pictures inside without a flash. That is the biggest reason to go with that lens. There are a lot of times that a flash just isn't appropriate.

If you start basic, you will be able to expand as you discover what your needs are. Maybe you will find you need more reach, then you can go shopping for zooms. Chances are that you won't need to go much wider than 18mm, so you will be well covered on that end.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll love your camera once you get used to using it. I would look into getting some good instructional books. There are several out there that will help you understand light/exposure/aperture. They will prove invaluable.

Thanks. Should i also consider picking up a filter as well for protecting the lenses? The only filters i can find on the website i should be buying the camera from are HOYA ones.

I wouldn't buy one to protect the lens, but you might want to pick up an inexpensive Circular Polarizer for situations where there is a lot of glare, or the sky is really dull. I wouldn't keep one on the lens all the time.

I've had my 300D for over a year and have ~9500 shots on it, the majority of which were with the kit lens. Main reason for this is monetary, of course, but I have gotten some good results with it, being sure to use a tripod and f/8 whenever possible... and of course some PP in Photoshop for contrast, saturation and sharpness. ;)

I am so glad to see this thread and look at it again. I have recently convinced myself that I needed an improved lens over my KIT lens...after buying a returning a 17-70 Sigma and a 18-50 Sigma f-2...I decided to take another look at the photos that I have taken with the kit lens....

After looking at many of these photos posted on this thread, it shows me that the picture is more about the person taking it and less about the equipment!

Here is one...

oh, this is a great post! Pictures with NO PS or PP! Excellent! I always believed that PS or PP is NOT A REQUIREMENT to get good pictures. Rather it should be a supplement to improve already good pictures. And these pictures can now become even better with additional PS or PP to achieve a different look.

Gotta say that if you know the limitations of ANY lens(including the cheapo kit lens) and shoot within those limitations, you will almost always get good results. The difference between high end and low end gear isn't a difference of good and bad image quality... it's a difference in limitations.

Julia, I'm afraid I was a bit stupid. I resized the original (colour version) to 640 pixels wide to post on here, and at that point thought about experimenting with B&W. I'll have to try and copy what I did with the original!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a310/scotttnz/IMG_0167.jpg

Actually, I think I like it more than any I have taken with more expensive lenses.

The kit lens is good in situations where you can stop it down a bit, and the subject isn't moving to fast. I am very happy with the result I get out of it for landscapes. Having said that I am upgrading to an EFS 17-55 f2.8 IS in the next couple of weeks for all those situation where I can't stop down....

Here we go, I never used this lens for arty stuff really, I just used to take it with me when exploring abandoned places and I must say I miss having an expendable lens when exploring such places, I replaced it with a sigma 18-50 and I'm less comfortable carrying it around creaky old buildings and bunkers, also the sigma has less dependable autofocus and it's a real pain having to take a few shots for safety or half pressing the shutter several times to get the right focus when you're trying to get around a place before someone notices you and decides to call the police because you look dodgy.

yeah, it does decently on its own. but side by side comparison to a better lens and the image quality, sharpness, colors and resolving power are obviously not there. i had to do a lot of post-processing to get my images the way i wanted them to be.
