If you're taking shots like this, then I wouldn't worry! That's lovely. The main thing I appreciated when I moved up from the kit lens was the added flexibility when indoors.

Noob question:

When people are talking about "stepping the lens down", what are you refering to?

bluej511
30th of October 2006 (Mon), 12:31
Stepping down the aperture to like f/8 where its the sharpest

surfologist
30th of October 2006 (Mon), 12:53
On my 17-85, i stop down to around f/8, on my 70-200 2.8, it is sharpest around f/5.6, so play with your settings, and look at the pic when zoomed in 100%, and see where it is sharpest.

Then, using that slower aperture is called stopping down

nismosr is a tough act to follow! :D

I've been keeping this building in the back of my mind for some time, & the sky co-operated one evening when I only had the Kit lens with me & about 5 minutes of light left to shoot it.
My tripod was home, too.
I helped the 2nd one out with PS. ;)

Verty,

I see your running OSX do you like transparent docks i do they look so much better. Chances are you know about these apps but here goes anyway.

I prefer TransparentDock2 but if you have a Intel version you'll have to use Cleardock.

I used the kit lens a lot before I got all my other glass. And I have to admit, when I go back and look at the picts I took with them. Im not at all disapointed by its quality.

Lens did have its limmitations, but you cant expect a mirical from a $100 lens. For the money, its actually a VERY good lens.

just out of interest: why havent you used higher F stops? something like F8 or F11? I have noticed almost everyone uses that aperture for such shots (when the camera is on tripod).

im not sure if this is the reason he did it for, but f8 is 2 stops up from f4, which quadripples the shutter speed, which would require a bulb exposure.

Problem being? :)

If he's on a tripod for 8 second shutter, he could do it just as easily for 10 minute shutter.

Yes but the difference in the clouds would be very visible in the two shots. In fact, you might not see any clouds in the longer shot as they would be moving faster than the sensor could "see" them.

just out of interest: why havent you used higher F stops? something like F8 or F11? I have noticed almost everyone uses that aperture for such shots (when the camera is on tripod).

there were 2 reasons, I was trying to reduce the shutter speed to lessen the flaring of the building lights, the colouration on the water, and also it was very windy so the clouds were moving very quickly.

the second reason was that I was taking portrait pics moments earlier and forgot to change the setting! :o  :)
