Just found this thread, but wish I'd known about it sooner.
This is a good chance for me to show off some of my favorite 18-55mm "kit" lens shots.
These are 'medium' sized photos, but you can see the larger versions by clicking here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sbcmetroguy/). The larger versions are more impressive anyway. :)

Wow those are very nice shots with the Kit Lense SBCMetroguy. Any PS at all or is it straight from the camera?

Thanks, Diggz! :) Actually in this case, since this thread is about what the lens itself can do, I dug out only some examples of shots that came straight out of the camera... and in JPEG mode to boot!
Oh, and absolutely no filters or anything either. Just my Rebel XT, kit lens, tripod, and remote shutter switch!

I actually bought the kit lens from the Sell forums here because I wanted a taste of the wide angle. I think there may actually be a focus issue at 18mm on my copy, as things get fairly soft. In any case, here's the first shot I got when I brought it out (handheld, no filters, PP to correct minor CA). I'm very new to DSLRs/photography, so any input on how I could have made this picture better would help.
BTW, great pictures SBCmetroguy!

Edit: Picture sharpened, given a contrast boost and made smaller. What looked good on my 1920x1200 laptop screen wasn't so great on a 1024x768 CRT the next day; hopefully I haven't overdone the PP... Moral: Try to display on at least 2 different screens and at more than 1 resolution before posting.

I just bought my Rebel Xt and the kit lense last week. I have taken around 200 pictures with it. I am very thankful for this forum. I have learn alot from just reading and looking at the photos. It would be nice (for us rookies) if I could see what the camera settings were, that is the only negative (if you call it that) thing i have. This forum has also show to me (hopefuly not my wife) that the camera and the "kit" lense have the ability to take tremendous pictures. That being said i guess it is me that needs to learn more about taking pictures! But please don't tell my wife she is about to let me order a new lense ; ) Thanks again to EVERYBODY. Soon I hope to have a photo that i am proud of and will send it along.

Although my picture isn't artistic, it shows that the kit lens can be quite sharp (for what it is).
This picture was taken with the kit lens on an XTi on Close-Up mode. Flash used is a EF-500 DG Super bounced on ceiling above with a Mini Softbox.
Picture was just resized and auto-adjusted on CS2. No other processing done.

Greets All ~ This is one of my first posts, and one of my first shots from my new Rebel XT. I still have yet to learn all the manual settings of this camera. That said, here is a photoshop corrected pic of a barn I took a shot of this morning. The original was over exposed, but I will learn from that mistake. Luckily photoshop is a powerful program. I used the Kit lense that came with my 350d.

i found a site called lenshoods.com, which i got from doing a search on this forum on lens hoods... dont know how legit they are. i might buy from them vs paying 30+ bucks for a piece of plastic from canon. plus i dont wanna spend that much money on the kit lens :P

I felt this thread needs a bump - there are a few people about to buy new DSLRs without the kit lens, which I feel is a mistake for a noob - the threads always go, have no money but don't want the kit lens!
Why, for crying out loud? nothing wrong with these kit lenses at all. Just use them properly.

Yes, it's the photographer and the PP. But I do think that photos taken with the kitlens generally needs more PP than photos taken with an L lens for instance.

true story :D the pics i take with the 50mm 1.8 dont require half the PP pics from the kit lens takes. but hey, if PP can make it better, why not!

I'm looking hard at the Sigma 17-70. I also like the Tamron 17-50 but feel I'll miss that 20mm. The Sigma gets good reviews from people so I just can't justify a high priced Canon. I shoot mainly outside and will be getting the nifty so I don't need a low F.

EH, it a gear forum, people don't like anything cheap. Except maybe the Nifty. Any lens is capable of good pictures, just give it to the right person.

No. I'm sorry Tareq, but you're going to have to spring for the 28-90 to use on them. I realize this will bankrupt you, but sometimes we need to make these sacrifices for our art.

it can but unfortunately the image circle does not fill the frame - so you get EXTREME vignetting at wide-mid zoom

Googled "converting an ef-s lens to ef" and this is the first thing that came up. I wouldn't mess with an expensive 10-22 this way, but i would a kit lens for sure.

I don't know if Sigma 12-24 will get that EXTREME vignetting as well.
I think i saw a shot taken by sig 12-24 on FF @12mm without any vignetting.

and i am wondering why that sigma 12-24 is better handling that vignette and sigma 10-20 or canon 10-22 can't, is it because the lens design itself for APC-s and FF? very close FL anyway.

yes but the sigma 12-24 is a lens designed for full frame, its image circle is larger. the ef-s lenses are designed to cover a smaller area, so the image circle is smaller. so basically, it won't look too great if you modify an ef-s to fit a larger sensor cam.
Jon
15th of March 2007 (Thu), 16:33
Right - the lens for a FF camera is designed with a larger image circle (the area which it ca n illuminate). Trade-off is that it's more difficult to get that large image circle and still get good IQ. I've seen reports of barrel distortion on the Sigma 12-24. But that's also why the EF-S lenses are generally wides; it's harder to design a really wide FF lens, so to get any kind of wide AoV once you apply the crop, it's easier to design a lens with a smaller image circle.

There are some malaysia pics of mine with the kit lensand actually most of my picstures here are taken with the kit lens .
About 2 weeks a go , I bought Sigma a 18-200 and an EF50F1.8 for travel in North East Thailand , but I think I do find the kit lens focuses much faster than both of them .
So now , I am seriously selecting the best lens to replace the 18-200, I found out I do not care about tele end of it and at least my copy is quite great in term of focus speed , much more accurate and less hunting than my EF50 F1.8, which I really dislike .
Then, bought a 17-85 IS and it is worse than the kid in term of optical quality , vignetting more , CA more and can not go as close to subject as the kit can.
I love the 17-85IS for its IS and some in door work but not sharp enough for landscapes and I am selling it to my sister for 450USD.
I think I will buy a Sigma 18-50 f 2.8 EX Macro or re-buy a Tamron 17-50 that my father took out from my room.
I belive both EX and SP are quaite good in different ways , I think I like the EX for its macro capability , I think I love the Tamron for its edge to edge sharpness and vibrant color ...both have the constant F2.8.
Any way , the kit is as good as the 17-85 or in term of optical quality better without the longer end of 1785 reach and IS so it is a good lens for walk around stuff though, the plastic mount of the kit lens seriously makes me nervous since I change the lensalot to others like EF-S60mm .
But if I have to compare between the Kit and the 18-200 at 18mm , then definitely the kit is better .
But the 18-200 is a great lens for walk around as well esp when you need a bit extra reach though , do not want to change lenses or you are not seriously after telephoto to justify the price of the 70-200L lens or 70-300IS .
Well for my use and interests the 70-200 or any tele zooms are not worth the price asking for. I know many people need or want it .
And I think the tele end of the 18-200 is quite sharp for its class at least better than the 17-85 IS at 80mm ,maybe only I think so but any way feel like that.
I wished I had compared them carefully before it was gone .
Ok, sorry for long tedious writing.

A lot of peple knock this lens, but I think for a kit lens it does what it should do. When I had this lens, I didn't have to do much PP because most of the pictures I took with it came out the way that I wanted them to be right out of the camera.
