Underexposed some, looks good on the LCD and laptop but not on most CRT's  A few of the red "horizontal" lines in the background are running & taillights from passing semi-truck tailers.

10 second shutter @ 55mm [F/5.6 obviously] resting on the camera bag sitting on the ground with people walking by. yeah yeah, I shoulda used the nifty fifty or 28-75mm f/2.8 but was just curious how the kit would perform :p

Probably because it's night time. You'd need a large aperture to let the most amount of light in. At 55mm on the kit lens, the max aperture is 5.6.

If he did a 10 second exposure at 5.6, he could've done a 20second exposure at f/8. I would've chosen the latter.

I have found that this lens is sharpest at the highest aperture for each length setting, thus:

1 the victoria monument in BKK.
2 the new airport .

Both taken at ISO1600 handheld , I wanted to test the real life practicality of the lens in low light ..........most of places in SE Asia prohibite me using a tripod so I have to focus on real usability of a lens not plain sharpness ,which can not be detected by normal level of prints like A4 size that I usually make .

After a series of tests , I decided to re-buy a 17-85IS and my kit lens almost never been mounted on my EOS but I rarely shoot with my kit lens to see how other lenses work in term of focus perfomance .

My EF 50f1.8 is a real bad lens , sharp but the bokeh is so bad and can not focus in low light.

I think the kit lens is under-rated because there are too many people obsessed with extreme lens sharpness.

The real life practicality is more important IMO and which is not tested in any kind of so-called pro review , but tested in an amture review like one you see in Flikr or Pbase site.

Ok , sorry for tedious writing.

It seems to be a nice lens. I used mine at concert photography mainly. Unfortunately the f going to 5.6 at 55mm meant I was very restricted in speed and had loads of blurring. So I had to replace it with a slightly faster lens suiting my budget.

If anyone is looking for a kitlens, mine is for sale in the market place here.

Another first poster here...thanks for the great thread and the awesome images...very inspiring for us newbies with limited glass selection (read: only own this kit lens).

One quick comment though, its REALLY helpful for us beginners - who are still lacking experience - when people list the settings that their pics were taken at (e.g. aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc...), so if its not too much trouble, I'd love to see that info on future posts. Thanks and keep 'em coming!

If you don't use firefox already, get it... and then install the following plugin;
http://ted.mielczarek.org/code/mozilla/fxif/

That'll allow you to see the exif (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, et) for many (most?) of the photos you'll see on here.

I am about to sell my last kit lens to a coworker, and thought I would add to the archive. I get pretty tired of hearing all the "helpful" folks that tell the new members to ditch the kit lens, when I am pretty sure those folks probably never even took the time to figure out the sweet spot on the cheapest Canon glass you can get.

Meet "Berry", our strawberry hermit crab! These had to be compressed a bit to fit the posting, but oh well, you get the idea.

When I bought my used Digital Rebel two years ago I made a point of measuring lens resolution before the two week return period expired.

Resolution charts are expensive - as I recall they were around $300, printed on glass. I found a picture of one on a web site - not as sharp as the original, but much sharper than the expected resolution of a 35mm lens or the EF-S kit lens. Attached is a small poor-quality pic of the chart (the original was 3.5 MB). Viewing the original on screen at 100%, the lines on the right side of center are discrete down to 18.5 vertical and 19 horizontal.

I had the chart printed 11X14 at a local photo shop - the result is good to 18 horizontal and vertical. Good enough for my tests.

The tests were minimal, just center resolution at 50mm focal length, f/8 with auto and manual focus. I compared my kit lens with my friend Ravi's kit lens, with his 50mm prime and 28-135 IS on his XT body and mine. Later I did the same tests with my new 28-105 f/3.5 USMII (on my body).

Results at ISO 100, 50mm f/8:
Both kit lenses: 15 vertical, 15.5 horizontal
His 50mm prime: 16 vertical, 16 horizontal
His 28-135 IS: 16 vertical, 16 horizontal
My 28-105: 16.5 vertical, 16.5 horizontal at 28, 50 and 105mm with barrel distortion at 28mm.

Conclusion: for a cheap lens, the 18-55 kit lens is surprisingly sharp at f/8. It has other issues, notably severe chromatic abberation (blue halo) with strong backlighting and more flare than I'd like.

But it's light, compact and focuses much closer than other non-macro lenses and it's perfect for my primary use: shooting on motorcycle trips.

Oh, yeah: if anyone wants a copy of the original chart, shout.

An early rise in Yosemite, looking back towards El'Portal.
There had been a lot of controlled burning last year, this was taken at 6:30am ish, the valley mist was mostly made up of smoke trapped from the previous day. Made for a nice shot. Image straight from the camera.
