Although I didn’t ever really use the EF-S 18-55 for my shootings, I at least tried it out a while ago. I got it in early 2005 because the kit was cheaper than the body allone that time...
And yes – it is capable of delivering fairly sharp results, even if you were pixel peeping - at 100%!

Runera.... very nice shot. Advice? Lose the tiny bit of blue sky in the top left corner in PS so there is no other blue in the shot. Spectacular shot.
Performa01... that dog enlarge is excellent. The lens isn't bad for the money. Still use mine and often amazed at the results.

I'm not too keen on the kit lens's colour output (maybe I should do more post-processing), but it's quite nice and sharp at f/8 and the width 18mm end comes in handy.

Those are nice shots. Of course, I haven't seen the original scenes - what's wrong with the color? Do you think it should have more saturation? That can be set in parameter menus instead of in PP if you prefer...

I'm actually very curious about whether or not they changed any of the optics (say, by adding a low dispersion element) for the IS version. I'm looking forward to seeing some reviews of that lens.

Yes I had my camera calibrated 3 times and all of my lenses calibrated @ NJ center.
Everytime I buy lens I just send it to NJ center eventhough it has no problem. They always seem to find something to fix/adjust.

Well of course, if you are comparing with L lenses (though my previous 14-70L wasn't any better regardless of photo size).
Its just better lens than what people make it out to be.

I enjoyed this lens and took some good photos with it but when the 17-55 2.8 IS went on the camera this lens was not even in my bag any more. Not even getting into image quality, the f/2.8 and IS have made a big difference to me.
I recently sold my XT and the 18-55 lens with it. I am getting the 40D on Monday and while I think I might miss a few of the XT features I don;t think I will miss this lens.
I agree this is a good lens but I think once you have replaced it with a better lens in the same zoom range you won't miss it.

I agree excellent image you have there. Typically I find people that aren't into photography miss some of the elements of an image and base it on more personal qualities so a picture like that the excellent clarity and lighting wouldn't have an effect on them much less the subject but a technically bad image of someone they care about would be deemed a better picture.
I say frame it though great shot.

Exposure:0.008 sec (1/125)Aperture:f/7.1Focal Length:39 mmISO Speed:100Exposure Bias:0/3 EV
And, yep, this lense isn't so bad: not too wide, not too long, stop it down a couple, and give it plenty of light. A bit more effort in PP, and it doesn't disgrace itself.
The J.D. bottle was a composite of five exposure, each lit from a different angle with a penlight, aperture priority at f4.5. Ended up with about 25 seconds or so for each.

Okay, now how in the heck do you people make pictures like this? ? ? It must take at least 2 people to shoot the picture because 1 person pourrs the water and someone else snaps the shot. And do you do the background? Is that a flashlight beamed on a purple painted wall? How do you do it ? ? ? ? ?
And how in the world do you water nice and in focus like that? If I tried that, it would just come out blurry and you know it.
im gonna guess: remote shutter release, pre-set manual focus with enough DOF to get all the subject in, tripod, high shutter speed, high iso, not sure about the background, multiple captures on burst mode, select the best and duotone them in PS to make it nice and purple (?) maybe
xarqi
15th of November 2007 (Thu), 01:04
How did you make the background perfectly black like that ?
Sorry for the late reply - I don't follow this thread closely. The subject was some distance from the background, and it is a flash exposure. Let's say the background was 3x the distance of the subject: the light from that will be 1/9 as bright as that from the subject. Add to that that the subject is mostly white, and when it is exposed for that, the contrast is dramatic. In short, the answer is "flash".

I've learnt to shut off the part of my brain that appreciates the technical qualities of a photo when judging whether or not to show it to friends. I think the difference between a good photo and a great image is whether or not both photographers and non-photographers can appreciate it—albeit perhaps in different ways. (Unless of course your business is taking photos for photographers!)

And same thing with the Jack Daniel's. Is that an oak table with a peice of black cardboard in the background? Where is the light located? Somehow you got the light underneath the bottle? ? ? How do you do "a composite of five exposures" ?
Okay, here goes:
The background is the curtains in my living room. The table is laminated chipboard out of Argos, and cost about Ł40. The lighting was courtesy of a penlight which cost about a fiver. Settings were ISO100, f4.5 aperture priority. This gave me about a twenty-five second exposure, of which there were five: one lit from above, one from the front (just above and behind camera), one from either side, and one from the rear with the maglite resting on the table about eight inches from the bottle. There were no other lights around, with focus being done manually under normal room light, before switching off all lights except the mag.
The five images were combined in Photoshop Elements 4, a bit of dodge and burn, and Bob's yer uncle. Glad you like it.:D

These are two of my favorites from the kit lens. It's quite a sharp lens once stopped down to f/8 or f/11. Both of these shots were taken at f/8 for example. I love the focal length too. It really makes me think I should upgrade to the 17-55 f/2.8 one day.

Totally agree: I've been doing a pic-a-day this month, using nothing but the kit lense. Its restrictions and short-comings have given me a better understanding of my camera, photoshop, basic composition, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I'm not saying that my photography skills have improved dramatically over the last twenty days, but I now know that a duff picture is invariably down to me, and not the lense.
My advice to anyone who has just bought a D-SLR with this kit lense is DO NOT RUSH OUT AND REPLACE IT. Live with it, get used to it: you might even grow to like it.;)

... or is inherently weak in all important characteristics, as is the 18-55. It does absolutely nothing well: it is uniformly mediocre - a testament to Canon design. They wanted a cheap lens, and that is what they made. Add to that the laughable quality control exhibited by Canon, and what you have is a lottery as to whether you actually get a lens that lives up to this planned mediocrity.
Yes - from time to time, it produces adequate results, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.
I'll say no more about it in this thread. If chance should favour me with any more 18-55 images that are worth posting, I'll send them along to go with the two I've already put up. I'm not optimistic that it will be any time soon.
