Nice! There might be a touch of CA on the left crane super structure, but then again, it could be from the bright white light source as well. I would have expected way more flare as well shooting into that bright light.

koalawalla

The CA appears to be gone when viewed from RAW. It could be from the JPG conversion from raw perhaps? It went from raw to 100% jpg then cropped and resaved as jpg again. I hate jpg's :-\ I'm a BMP kinda guy :) If anything, I blame it on my rickety tripod really meant for lighter cameras and not my 40D + grip. lol.

number six
21st of December 2007 (Fri), 14:10
Reversing the lens is -well- reversing the lens. :D

With an adapter ring you mount the front of the lens (via the filter threads) to the camera body and use the lens backwards.

Autofocus won't work, of course, and the aperture is fixed, but you can get some very close macro shots with the lens reversed.

I sooooo need a new lens!

I just got the new 18-55 IS lens as a replacement for my original 18-55. It's much sharper, even wide open, and the IS really works.

I got it for $175 US from Amazon.com. Really liking it so far...

I'm curious to see how the d40x kit lens compares to the new Canon 18-55 IS (which will probably be the new kit lens on the 450D).

We all know how easy it is to get caught up in the whole "more kit means better photo's" mentality. I was just having a laugh at someone who's sig said something about "There's no substitute for practice and passion" then proceeded to list off close to $100 000 worth of kit.

I have the kit lens on my XT ALL the time... I bought a Tamron 28-75, which I thought I loved... it takes amazing portraits, but I'm considering selling it because it's just not wide enough for walking around on the XT.

Of course lens quality has something to do with how good your photos come out, if not, why would the pro's be using what they're using... but there's much more to be said for pre-thought, composition and exposure when it comes to taking really good photos.

All this said... I'm not that good of a photographer. Maybe it's just that the 18-55 fits my skill level...

Here's my flickr site, where almost everything has been shot with the kit lens.

The kit lens' 2 strengths (in my opinion) seem to be it's excellent for night shots and macro shots. If you're lugging a tripod around with you then you can step it down and produce perfectly acceptable IQ.

Know its limitations and play to its strengths. When its limitations are holding you back it's time to buy something a bit better.

Vermin87

I shoot a lot of group photography, and a few I have done with the kit. Up close doing macro work, the Kit is sharp, but when you have 60-70 people in a group shot, the quality of the lens becomes more evident. My 24-70 is much sharper when it comes to that, but sometimes venues are just too small and I need to use the Kit. I'm really tempted to get the 17-55 now, but I feel like my next purchase will be a full-frame body

I think I got this one the day the camera arrived. I've found the lens to be ok outdoors on a day with good light. But, I like to do too much inside work, and I can't seem to get decent results with the 18-55 indoors. I've found the 50mm to be much better for that (except a little wider angle for the same price would be nice).

There are some really great shots in this thread. It is obviously a capable lens!

I still only own the kit lens, here is a shot I took about 2 minutes (literally) after opening the box and starting to play with it.

Love that!!:D

Someone on flickr shared this thread with me, and I am so happy to see all these great photos with the kit lens. I am getting a 400D soon, although I am looking at the new 18-55 IS kit lens (as well as the 50mm 1.8).

I am only through to page 40 of this thread, but was wondering if anyone has any animal action shots (dogs/horses) taken with the kit lens?

Cheers!

I think to summarise, the kit lens is a good learner's lens, it'll give you a taste of different types of photography... it's reasonably wide, it's got a zoom, it's good when stepped down to f/8, if you don't pixel peep the images are reasonable, good for night shots and quite good for macro.

What would be the best setting to get the best action shots with this lens (for example a dog running/jumping)? Between this kit lens thread and the nifty fifty thread, I'm just about convinced that I should get a 400d and both lenses now, rather than wait to be able to afford a pricey/fast lens.

JoYork
14th of January 2008 (Mon), 10:52
I have both lenses and the nifty fifty is certainly faster and the IQ is much better. Plus with the aperture being wider you get better bokeh.

Here are a couple of pics I took recently:

The downside is you can't zoom with the nifty.

Sure you can! It has 2L zoom. That's two-leg zoom. ;)

JoYork

That's very true.

I'm so glad I bought a prime. Really makes you think about the shot, and the IQ is excellent. I'm buying a zoom next but I'll top up with a couple more primes later.

shutter priority, keep it above 1/1000 sec 1/1000? I don't think it needs to be that fast! Most indoor sports shooters are happy with what..1/250? I'm sure that would be adequate for a dog running/jumping around, as long as you can nail the focus and pan well.

ive noticed motion blur on extremeties even at 1/500 sec for moving animals
even if you pan the subject there will be something going faster like a foot or tail

depends how frozen you want the subject to be

That's a cool chart!

I now have an IS also. Interesting - they show a significant dropoff in center sharpness at 55mm that I didn't find with my resolution tests. Mine is as sharp wide open at 55mm as at 18mm, and about the same as at f/8. Variation in samples, I guess. Although I'm sure their test is computerized and much more sophisticated than mine...

yup, looks like you put it to good use, i like those a lot. so many people whinge about the lens's IQ or faults and never really try to push it or see what it can do. a good photographer can get amazing shots out of a disposable p&s camera... while a poor or unskilled one wouldnt be able to compete even with the latest pro gear.

thanks. I agree. And, those shots I took could have been a lot sharper. It was when I first got the camera, my first DSLR, so was still learning concepts of ISO, white balance, even finding the sweet spots on the lens F stop range, etc.

The kit lens probably is more than enough for 90% of people. I see a lot of people buying L glass thinking it's going to instantly improve their photos. The time I put in with my kit lens really made me concentrate on composition, etc. I'm a much better photographer because of it.
