Here are three of my favourites from the kit lens. I am always impressed just how close in I can get with this lens.

Photofred225, Its a great shot, I really like the reflection, is the curve in the building real or is it an artifact of the lens?

Thanks.
and its the actual curvature of the building. I wanna re-shoot the same buidling with my new sigma 10-20. :D

I had written the 18-55mm kit lens of as complete garbage, until I read this thread and it inspired me to give it a go. I now see it as a challenge to get some good pictures out of it. :-)

^ Were you shooting in AV or complete manual? Also, for the flame shots, did you simply meter the flame and shoot? I like how the area around it is underexposed but the flame is exposed properly and frozen. I would like to know how to do that really fast when the time occurs :)

Messing around with black and white...
The kit lens is pretty good at capturing detail:
246627
And even wide open, it's decently sharp and produces a nice bokeh:
246628
You have to admit, this is a pretty impressive performance for a lens you can buy on the POTN sell forum for $65...

I wanted to say a huge thanks for starting this thread, I'm very much an amateur photographer, with a Canon 350d and the kit lenses that came with it. I was starting to get disheartened about the gear I have, because I can't afford better lenses, but its great to see that if I keep going then I can still get some fantastic shots with my 18-55mm.
Just one that I have taken recently, still learning about PP. C&C welcome

The camera & lens doesn't make the photograph, the photographer does. You have a very nice website with some very good shots on it.

Once you know its limits, you can get nice results from it. Even sharpness is not a problem, some of this photos were printed 50x33cm (~ 20"x13")
On the other hand, I rarely use this focal range, and I can't remember last time I used kit lens, since getting Sigma 10-20.

As those three shots and your night one testify. Think you had a bit to do with making that lens look so good too though.
Here's mine for the pot. Don't think I ever squeezed the best out of mine and just traded up to the Tamron 17-50 for the constant 2.8, but could never really complain about the kit lens considering.

This is my first post, so be gentle.
This is just rotated and cropped, no other PP.
800 ISO, 4.5 fstop, 1/60 shutter speed, tungsten wb setting, manual exposure.
I know it is nothing special, but I'm just starting to get serious about this stuff. This is my first week shooting all manual after having the 20D for a little over 2 years.

Thanks! No filter on any of the them. Settings are 18mm, f/8, ISO100 on all of them, and shutter speed is 1/50s on the first, 30s on the second, and 463s (yes, like 7.7mins) on the third.

Nice fireworks photo! What does the EXIF data look like on that one? I've always been curious as to what methods people are using to capture the entire firework (including the mortar trail going up, as well as the burst, all in one shot).

This one is 4s f8. With aperture you change the thickness of the fireworks, and with shutter speed how many burst are captured on one shot. Of course you have to watch that chosen exposure is also right for other elements in the frame.

Astounding images. I love the second two in the first post. I am so confused - every time I try really long exposures I get a funny looking milky red sky... Must be clouds up there that I can't see or maye Northern Irelands night sky is just not as interestingly coloured as the rest of the world. ... I was SURE you were going to say you'd used some filters used in your snaps... amazing.

You haven't mentioned anything about shooting conditions: time of day, weather, place (in the city or away from the city lights). However, I can give you some general guidance...
If you want colors like in the second and third photo, you need some interesting clouds, and shoot just after the sun sets. If there are no interesting clouds for sun to shine on, then you can shoot at blue hour, and get even blue sky (2nd shot here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=205834&page=59)). In any case, its important that correct exposure of sky matches the one of the surroundings (if there are any other light sources in frame), and it can last just for few mins. If there are not, like in third photo, and 2nd in night shots thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=205834&page=59), then you can have whichever exposure you need.
Hope that helps, and that I haven't complicated it too much :)

phooey - thats cr4p. i bet you wouldnt be able to tell the difference more than 50% of the time if the exif was stripped. i've seen absolute low-IQ rubbish shot with Ls and fantastic work shot with non-Ls.
maybe there should be a challenge thread which invites skeptics and cynics to make their best guess as to what gear was used for each photo posted? put one's metaphorical money where their mouths already are? and if you and others who think that way are able to correctly identify the clear majority of the work, then i would retract everything i have said here and have "hat" for lunch.

that looks like clouds lit by city lights to me
hmm me thinks you are correct there....
Hope that helps, and that I haven't complicated it too much :)
yea thats helped, I get what you mean... thanks a lot :)

lol at no L. :D Time to buy some red paint and a feather thin brush :P
One question, isn't the image quality (color) solely based on in-camera processing? I understand that different glass can alter sharpness and focus (and of course the range/AF speed/f stop). But based soley on the quality of the image (colors/hues) ... isn't that where only the in-camera processing (DiGIC size and quality) makes a difference?

nope.
certain lenses are renowned for their 'perfect' color accuracy - such as the 85L.
'cheaper' glass is not as fine quality, and any loss of quality will subtly alter many aspects of the recorded image, including colour

The best thing about "L"' is their color reproduction and build quality. They really nail the color quite well, some "L" better than others.
You can still take great shots with a kit lens, but you will need to post process more. For landscape I don't think it matters. For portrait, I don't think it matters. For sports and wildlife? Yes, having an "L" matters. That's when you need fast focusing and to capture difficult subjects.
"L" is not something that will make you a better photographer. It's not even something you need unless IMHO (like I said previously) you shoot pro sports or wildlife. If I did not shoot wildlife, I probably wouldn't even have an "L". The only reason I do is because the 17-40L reduces my post processing time(color, contrast) and it feels nice. Those aren't urgent needs, but rather preferences. I have taken just as many good pics with my old kit lens as I have with my "L". Alot of it is hype, keeping up with the Jones's, etc. If you need good build quality and want to reduce some PP time, go for it. But they won't get you better shots unless you do wildlife or college/pro sports. If you do landscape, you are much better off spending your money on trips to actually interesting locations than buying five "L"'s and taking pictures of the suburbs.

I am really beginning to love this kit lens, sure it's not built the best, but the color reproduction is pretty good! I use it as my wide angle lens for shoots of cars mostly. Because I don't have a dedicated wide angle, it actually gets the job done well.

Anyways, one or two of the shots were posted earlier in this thread, but if anyone's interesting in seeing the whole gallery, here's the direct link. There's a couple dozen good examples of pushing that kit lens to the max.

It is indeed an HDR using Photomatix. It's one RAW, then set to a higher and lower exposure in two JPEG files, and then combined.
It's really easy to overdo it though. It's a great program, but like any tool it doesn't work for every job.
The kit lens is capable of taking really nice shots IMHO. I love nature landscape and to me it's "location, location, location!". That show was in Yellowstone National Park, which is a photographer's dream.

18-55 EF-S on 40d w/420EX bounced of a white ceiling. Adjustments were edge sharpening, levels, contrast, and white balance with whibal card.
Thanks!

Is it me or are these kit lens archive shots looking better than the 17-55 ($1000) lens archive thread, lol?!

Better lens does not automatically mean better results. I find when I use my kit lens, I have to pay more attention to get the results I am looking for.

tbisaacs: I am sorry to say i dont believe that came from the kit lens. I don't mean to offend you or anything, in fact this shuold be a compliment, but that dog pic is to crisp and clear and colorfoul to be from a kit lens. Maybe it came from your fifty?

Usually a "better lens" equals better pictures, however small or big a step up. It is a fact that some lenses have better color reproduction, better sharpness, better resolving power, better contrast, and better image "pop".
