Canonmsc...are these files needed?

Are these files needed on the CF card or can they be deleted after I delete the pictures on the card?

100.CTG
898.CTG
D.CTG

They are in the Canonmsc subdirectory of DCIM on the cf card.

If you *format* the card using the camera (that's another menu option than "delete all"), are the files still there?

You should format your card in the camera when you are ready to "clear" the card for more pictures. The camera will set up everything just the way it wants it.

Toss them, they are of no use. I reformat my CF card each time before reloading it back into my camera. No problems.
