I have had a good lock at this and my comments as follows:

DOF very interesting
Subject matter different
The upright breaks the photo into 2 halfs

I would try and place the lock on thirds

The lighting is a bit soft for this type of shot -try sharpening

Try placing a models hand in the chain to give more interest

nice pic though

good to lock at

I like this, different but appealing.
Perhaps I would crop a touch from the left, I don't think you need so much empty space, and perhaps in a gritty B&W?

agreed. no specific intention is needed. just taking photos and learning from each shot you take is enough. way to stand up for that!

I like it for the colour contrast between the rusted chain and the pole.

I recently attempted to photograph a chain in a tree while on a hike. It didn't turn out well at all.

I happen to like this photo for the very reasons I wanted to capture the chain in the tree. It was very aesthetic.

I don't mean to threadjack but I wanted to share the following anecdote with you. A friend came over last week to look at my portfolio. She brought along a friend of hers who liked photography. The whole time her friend was looking through my photos, she kept asking what I was trying to convey with this image or that. She was very nice and I know she meant well by asking me about my images, but I couldn't help but think she was being a bit pretentious. Finally I told her that I don't often try to convey anything with my images aside from aesthetics. I told her that I usually just take a photograph if I think it will look good in print.

Photographs don't have to have any deeper meaning. They just have to look good and I happen to think that this one looks good.

I like it! But I cant decide if I'd like it more with a little bit more saturation and contrast in places.

I definitely understand the question, "Why did you take this shot?" because the subject is very mundane, and on top of that, the point of view is the same one we see in life every time. Try crouching down and looking up or something.

That being said, the depth is nice. On the other hand, the weed is somewhat distracting. The colors (at least on my monitor) lack density.

I did a little tweaking (on the photo) to increase the density. I duped the layer twice. On one, I have the blend mode set to multiply. I put a diagonal gradient from 100% opaque to 100% transparent so that the opaque part is the lower left and the transparent part is the upper right. The second layer has the gradient reversed and the blend mode to soft light.

Then I took that and switched it to monochrome, channel mixer, 60% red, 50%green and 10% blue.

I think the mono looks best.
