Hey I'm thinking about creating my own website but I don't want to learn PHP... are there programs out there that are VERY friendly to new users?

EE looks great , but from my reading of the forum it seems I'll need some programming expereince...

I can't see that you need any programming experience

All you need to be able to do is to ftp some files to your server and change some permissions. You also have to follow the install instructions carefully.

I believe that version 2 will be easier to set up

Some webhosting comes with fantastico and that has gallery and coppermine software available but I didn't find them as good as EE

well perhaps I should just face my fears ("Fear is the mindkiller") and jump into EE with both feet!

Make sure you download version 1.5RC4 and not the older 1.2 version that still linked on the main page

See this thread http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29266

Clean install instructions are at the 4th message and then follow furhter instructions at
http://www.photography-on-the.net/ee/beta/setup_upload_system.php

If you work through each step methodicaly then you should have a good working gallery

Moon,

It's not as easy as Mike makes it sound. You will absolutely need to learn some PHP or your site will end up either hacked or very basic. EE is NOT simple or easy to set up. Unless you want to spend a week learning PHP and making it run well I would recommend Jalbum or some other software that generates HTML ready to upload.

Check out JAlbum, it's free and generates photo galleries quickly and easily. They are already in HTML format... just upload to your site and create a link to them. There's even a template that makes the pages look like EE. Very simple but quite full featured.

Regards.

When it comes down to it any gallery software you download and are supposed to set up yourself will require some form of manipulation to a greater or lesser degree if you want it to perform and look as you realy want.
Played with about 4 products and they all have their strong and weak points.

Sorry CD500 user, but I disagree. I use EE for some years now with full satisfaction, and don't know one bit of PHP. Site was never hacked, and if you read this forum regularly you are warned in time in case of any vulnerabilities with explanations how to solve also a newbie can understand.
Also Pekka is so extremely helpfull that even those people who didnt succeed installing EE managed with his help.

The only thing that might be useful is knowledge of CSS / HTML to fit in the EE layout with the rest of your site. As I understand this part will even become much simpler with 2.0 as that will support a template/skinning system.
