Hi,
I'm almost committed to buying a EOS 10D and wondered if my 430EZ Speedlite and ML3 ring flash will work safely with this camera? Any impartial advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Canon 10D uses E-TTL flash mode. Any Canon XXX-EX flash will support that. XXX-EZ flash units will not support that, so you can only use them in manual mode.

The general choices are 550EX and 420EX, plus maybe others.

I had a 380EX when I bought my D60, and recently upgraded to a 550EX. I was about to get rid of the 380EX til I noticed that the 550EX has a minimum distance from the camera. Any closer and things get washed out. Now I'm trying to decide whether it's easier to remember to reduce the flash exposure or to switch to the 380EX for close shots. Surprisingly, that's not an easy question to answer. I'll probably get a 420EX, for the slave functionality. It won't help answer the above question (just substitute 420 for 380), but at least I'll be able to get rid of the 380EX.

Thanks for replies so far. Any advice on ML3 ring flash issue - would it work with EOS 10D?

If you study the Canon system chart, you will see that it does not include your ring light flash.

The only one I see in the chart is MH-14EX.

Basically, anything xxxxx-EX is what you want.
