I don't mind... since it was only noise reduction ;) I have played around with the "Reduce Noise" function in CS2, but it didn't do enough to justify using it. That program looks like it did a pretty good job. I will definately try it out, thanks!

Noiseware has a free "Community" version.
I ended up buyng the "Standard" edition for $29.00 so I could do batch files and also preserve EXIF data.

noise ninja is one of the best noise reduction programs out there according to reviews
i have it myself and one thing i like to use it for is skin smoothing - it does a great job even on auto-profile without remving details like eyelashes or freckles

I used to have the 50 f1.4, but never used it, so ended up selling it. f1.8 is so cheap, i really have nothing to lose.. and with a new baby on the way, 50 will come in handle, as well as the 85 too. heheh! would love to use my 70-200 on the baby, but dont want to scare him just yet.. heheh! time to buy one next week and will post some images soon...

I just got the lens today and took it out of the box and put it right on the camera right when leaving the store. These are practice shots... still haven't learned it yet though.
I think I'm starting to feel it though... I like it a lot. I'm sure a second trial of the lens will put out better pics.
ISO is very high in night shot because I was trying to prove to my friends that I could take these night shots without a tripod haha... they didn't like the nifty fifty ()because of the no-zoom) at first until I showed them what it could do.

I had the "nifty 50" but sent it back. I took test shots on a detailed image (my kitchen, actually) and the edge sharpness was poor and didn't clear up until f/8 or f/11. Center sharpness was not to my liking, and was not as good as my 17-85mm USM. I understand (but haven't tested) the 50mm f/1.4 is a totally different animal, so my experience doesn't apply.
If you're happy with your 50 f/1.8, great. All I'm saying is that I would test it first, not look at an overall photo, and compare it to other glass you have.

Good lens for money. Focus shift is pretty bad but when its in focus, it delivers really good pictures with sharpness.
Don't get the hood, it looks ugly and it could actually hurt the motor since its directly attached to the extending part of the lens not to the lens body itself.

Exactly. I think we sometimes forget just how inexpensive this lens is and then complain coz a lens costing tens times the amount is better.
It is a great lens (supposing you have a good example of it), and it will give results well beyond its meagre cost. Enjoy this little lens and get everything you can of out of it.

Well, I have a shot from the Nifty, and for test and comparison, the same shot taken with the 2.5 Compact Macro, the 1.4 and, for further comparison, the 24-70 f/2.8L.
My shots were all at f/2.8, which is where the Nifty starts to get tack sharp. The purpose of the test was to see how, at its sharpest, the Nifty stacks up against a range of "better" lenses.
My conclusion? Very nicely, thank you! Wide open, not so much, but in its sharp range, Nifty owners can take encouragement that your IQ loses nothing in comparison!
If you're interested in seeing all shots, or want the technical or PP details, you can at a little PBase gallery here (http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/50mm_lens_tests).
-
And now: **WARNING! IF YOU FIND COMPARISON TESTS WITH REPETITIVE IMAGES BORING OR USELESS, SKIP THIS POST!!**
And now, the images: first, a sample of the whole shot (taken by the Nifty) then 100% crops from the Nifty, the 2.5 Macro, the 1.4, and the 24-70. All shots taken with the 5D at ISO 100, f/2.8.
Full scene, EF 50mm f/1.8 at f/2.8:

Don't get the hood, it looks ugly and it could actually hurt the motor since its directly attached to the extending part of the lens not to the lens body itself.
That is a rather dubious suggestion... The hood weighs about the same as a regular circular polarizer one would use anyway. There probably isn't even a documented case of motor failure being caused by a lens hood in a EF 50mm f/1.8 II. That's just plain silly.

I believe these were all taken at f/2.2 and iso400 Av mode. This was last weekend after I bit it hard at mount hood snowboarding. Early season + everclear for the win :D
No PP, all shot raw. Resized and no sharpen at all. I love this little lens :D

Having gone through this thread I decided that I needed to go out and give this lens another run.
I hadn't been happy with this lens previously but realised that I was probably asking too much of it. So, to be fair, I set my 30D to P mode using RAW. The two photos below are just test shots, so nothing flashy, but I must say that I shall be using this lens more often now. :)
Straight conversion from RAW using DPP, resized using PSE5. No other post-processing was used. On-board flash was used for the inside photo.

should have tried a v small inner shadow or a gradient to match the pen's lighting. Looks simple enough from here. (dont quote me on that)

coutout iris' in front of the primary element, they also used a filter to further secure the pseudo iris to the front.

Thanks. It was very spur of the moment. I used one of the ladders I had out for hanging christmas lights to get higher. Then just had my mom and girlfriend throw leaves. He was already out kicking up a storm having a blast with em all :)
