.... look at the pictures which outline how it's done

coutout iris' in front of the primary element, they also used a filter to further secure the pseudo iris to the front.

I'm definitely going to try this out of boredom over xmas.

/pictures > words

Certainly, but sometimes I need translation of the pictures into words..... Not everyone sees what is there.

Hello all, Lot's of great photo's! I believe this is my first post here, although I have been lurking for sometime.

The photo below of my daughter practicing violin with mainly the illumination of the piano lamp was snapped right after I bought the nifty-fifty and pretty early in my day's with the Rebel XT. It's still one of my favorites.

OK, 50mm 1.4 USM vs 50mm 1.8. Is there the same amount of difference in quality as the difference in price (4x, think)

Just to ask the question...How many pages of photos do you need to see to buy a pricey zoom if you needed 103 to spend $80?

I just got my first DSLR yesterday (XTi), and this is the only lens I have for now. I went out on campus today and took a few shots...Maybe I'll get the better ones up soon.

Fair point but I think the thing which is interesting about threads like these is it gets to show people the versatility of the lens. I love threads like this, helps to show how people use it as well.

Moving on from that, I found last night that mine is soft at f/1.8 but becomes tack sharp from f/2.8-8ish.

Love this lens.

For a $1000 piece of glass I would say about 1,370 pages would be needed;)

Jo i love those jack Russel ones, and the eyes on that cat are amazing.

What pp was done on the shots?

Not a great deal, from memory the pics were just reduced for the web and then sharpened, although they looked very sharp straight from the camera.

Here are a couple from tonight's Purdue game. The lens is a bit short for this duty, and I'm no good at it, but here they are anyhow.

Except for the fact that it is Purdue, I like them. Maybe when you go to the Indiana/Purdue game can you get me a shot of Eric Gordon!

I shot full manual, ISO 200 or 400, 1/640 - 1/1000, and all apertures were 1.8.

While I'm in here, I'll throw up some shots from downtown Chicago at Xmas time. PP is a bit of sharpening, color, and exposure.

I want to thank everyone in this thread! It made me go out and buy a Nifty Fifty I have had it a couple of weeks and haven't put the Kit lens back on the camera since. One thing as a newbie I have found it makes be concentrate more on compostion since my body and my feet are the zoom portion of the lens. I love the low light capabilities of it also. Shot a concert for some young friends of mine in some terrible light, but thanks to my little cheap lens I got some decent shots http://s243.photobucket.com/albums/ff242/stratocurtster/Rebel%20XTI/Revelation/?albumview=slideshow

It seems weird to use a zoom after using this lens... I'm hoping to buy either the 17-55IS or a similar Tamron or Sigma for much less. I used my kit lens again the other day and found it odd that by twisting a a piece of plastic I don't have to walk around. I think I prefer the prime because it makes me think about the shot better. Weird eh?

Have a read of this link http://www.zenadsl5251.zen.co.uk/photos/50mm.html which gives you some good tips on the "Nifty". It includes a lay-persons guide to depth of field, and is very interesting.
