Good for you!!
I saw a rescue kitty with one eye and wanted to take him home so bad but we already have two dogs and a cat. I got my kitty from a rescue group... and one of the dogs (a bichon) from animal control just before he was to be put down.
Love the shots of your cat! She's a beauty!

Hi Willy b. Can't speak for all the users on this one but the lens doesn't need a lot of PP if any in most instances. It really is a lovely sharp little lens. Good light obviously helps but using it brings results.
Good luck and post some when you can.

This is an ULTRA SHARP lens. It is incredible sharpness. I'm being a bit lazy here but I'll post these photos I had on another topic. they are the only 50mm f/1.8 II photos I have uploaded so :D
At f/4-f/5.6 using flash, the sharpness for things like portraits is OBSCENE
If you are a sharpness freak like me, you will not be disappointed with this lens (as long as you get one within specs!)
EXIF: f/8, 1/100, ISO 200, on 400D/XTi (430EX flash fired)

here's one of the first with the lense.
friend of mine.
this place was absolutely pitch black with the exception of a few little side lights on the wall that put out enough light to do nothing.
so, it was just on "on-board" flash on the camera for this.
exif should be intact, so far I love this lense, it's amazing in low light/pitch black conditions like this.

Thanks, just starting out with stock...Hopefully this would get accepted...
I just realized...Does the thread stating 1.8F shots mean using the 1.8 lens? or using the 1.8F stop of the 50mm lens? Mine is at F8 using the 50mm 1.8 lens, does this count?

Nice shots, Cory.
It means using the 50mm f/1.8 lens at whatever f/stop suits your shot. As opposed to using, say the 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.2.
So yes, it counts!

I don't know about purchasing such expensive L series lenses considering I'm an amateur photographer in the standard sense but a pro when it comes to the field I choose to shoot. Regardless, my 40D is a great camera. I wonder what your opinions are about the lower non IS or L lenses are for everyday shooting and nothing like studio photography etc. That 50mm sounds nice but what makes it so cheap? I guess the thought of spending so much cash on some of these lenses makes my stomach turn. If I could afford to do so, I would. What are your thoughts on this particular "cheap" AF EF 50mm lens for everyday use?

Salman1, it's a fantastic all day, everyday lens. Very fast and great image quality for the price. Bokeh leaves a little to be desired, but not bad. It's very light and plastic feeling, it has a plastic mount to the camera. I have heard stories of people opening thier bag and finding this lens in pieces for no apparent reason. Thankfully it's costs less than a good quality UV filter. I have enjoyed mine thoroughly.
That said, I am upgrading to the 1.4 as soon as possible. The metal mount, distance chart for focusing and hopefully better autofocus performance will make it worth it. I am only doing so becasue I have used my 1.8 so much. Much more than any of the other high end lenses I own.

There's no denying this lens is a lotta fun, but I just hope I never drop it as I know for sure it won't survive a fall of more than a few inches.

I guess the thought of spending so much cash on some of these lenses makes my stomach turn. If I could afford to do so, I would. What are your thoughts on this particular "cheap" AF EF 50mm lens for everyday use?
Believe me, I am in the same situation as you...I have a degree in Photography and the main reason I havent pursued it was due to the cost. After 9 years I am falling back in love with it and dropping cash on my 30D and lenses, cards, bags, tripod, monopod, etc...puts a pretty big dent in my wallet. I am trying to pursue the stock avenue to try and make some money to pay this stuff off and hopefully buy better lenses. In my case, this little 50mm was $90 and with a little PP, has some great results. So far I am really happy with it, although I am still fighting the fact that I cant zoom which makes me less inclined to use it for everyday shooting. The biggest advantage I see with it, is the 1.8 stop. For $90, with an 1.8 its really a steal.

Salman1 - I say go for it. If you look around, Adorama has one of the best prices w/shipping to the US right now. Mine's on the way & will be here tomorrow. Total cost with shipping - $74.95. It just doesn't get better than that for the 1.8 & the potential quality I've seen from some of the pictures in this thread.

The biggest thing I find with this lens seems to be lighting. Sure it has a nice wide aperture and lets in plenty of light, but the pictures dont seem to be nearly as sharp as when there is good lighting. The exact same item flash on and flash off with flash looks worlds better. I hate flash as it can look unnatural IMHO but its a necessary evil with this lens i find...Anyone else notice that the AF seems to be 'loose' even under good lighting, like it just bounces around a little when locking on? Maby mine is just loose who knows..

Well, FWIW, the images you see above (which look pretty sharp to me) were taken in a 15x17-foot living room with a single up-firing floor lamp with an old 100W bulb in it. Focusing was always quick.

What were your settings? Av mode? Sometimes when using Av i set my fstop at lets say f/2 to get a nice DOF but then it ends up overexposing badly, strange how it does that sometimes, then i have to use full manual to get a good exposure (using a 40D). Anyone else experience this?
-- edit-- just changed metering from spot to evaluative, seems better now :)

I only shoot in manual mode. I could see myself shooting in Av mode, say, outside where there's tons of light, but it's too frustrating to use inside.
Those images were, top to bottom:
1/30, f/2.0, ISO 800
1/60, f/2.2, ISO 400

Took these today and last night, I really love the lower apertures under f/4 as they allow me to make the most of our poor late afternoon winter light. Although the shallow DOF can be a challenge as seen in the three cats photo. Sometimes it works to the photo's advantage though.

QUESTION
How did you get everything white like that? It look like there's just nothing there in the background. What are the fruits actually resting on, a table?
Its my budget version of a lightbox without the box. IF that makes sense...I will post a pic later tonight of it. But I read up on the DIY lightbox thread and just used the easle paper that you can get at walmart on my desk. I used two artist desk lamps, the cheap $10 ones...and put tissue paper over those to diffuse the light. Used 100W bulbs... This in conjuction with my flash gave me "close" results. In PP, I adjusted white balance (shoot raw), and exposure, brightness, contrast, unsharp mask, and curves...just played around with those settings. There is no cutting out of the background with pen or lasso tools. I am pretty happy with the results for such a basic set up. Just hoping they are good enough for stock...

I've been eyeing this thread for weeks! We got a Rebel XTI for Christmas, and I'm loving returning to photography as an interest. I was really into it in late grade school and middle school, but have let it slip away. The Rebel is pulling me quickly back in, and this forum has been great!
My nifty fifty arrived today, purchased from forum member Haverman. Thanks! Here's one of the first shots I took, of my daughter:

Before you buy a zoom lens you should get some advice here or elsewhere because not many zooms (especially cheap zooms) will be as sharp as your 50mm 1.8.
You may be very disappointed in your choice.

Decided on the 17-55IS and the 70-200 f/4 IS... I think they're generally considered to be about the sharpest zooms you can get, my friend has the 17-55 and I'm happy with the quality of the images.
By the end of the year I hope to have a couple more primes (85 1.8 and 135 f/2)... I'm happy to zoom with my feet and I love the quality, but there are some events coming up this year where only a zoom will do for now.

For me, the crop is a little too tight, and I can tell it is with the on-board flash (harsh shadows). With bounced flash, would have been much better.
In my opinion, I think the DOF on the shot is just about perfect! EXIF information is stripped, so I can't tell what you shot, but I think aperture-wise it is good.

Great shots! I found the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens for $70.00 on Amazon. Is this the same type of lens everyone is using? I'm impressed for such a cheaply priced lens. I guess it really IS the photographer. It is amazing to see so many posts in other threads knocking down the lower priced lenses. Is there a difference between the II and what many of you are using?
