But at 50mm it's, what, an f/4.5 lens? That's glacial compared to 50mm f/1.8.
Plus that lens is like 7 times as expensive as the nifty.

at f10? arent the f-stops a universal standard?
maybe you chose the wrong hyperfocal length when you picked your focus point

Yepper, upon furthur examination it was user error. I must have bumped the tripod or something but it sent my focus point to the back drop right above the barrel. I have a better one now that I have gone through them and really looked. Told ya I needed to shoot with it more...

This looks like a great (cheap) lens instead of the getting the f1.4 but, does using the 28mm-135 offer the same photos/options and duplication of my lenses or does the fixed focal length of the 50mm offer more? I was questioned by a friend for my reason behind getting a 50mm when it is already represented in my collection now....

F1.8 is why. And as you can see, it's super sharp
jonnythan
19th of January 2008 (Sat), 12:15
That 28-135mm doesn't go larger than f/4 or so at 50mm.
At a 50mm focal length, an aperture of f/1.8 (about 27mm in diameter) has an area over 5 times an aperture of f/4 (12.5mm diameter). In other words, you get about 5 times more light through an f/1.8 aperture than an f/4 aperture.
Combine this light-gathering ability with the fact that larger apertures make your DOF thinner and you have a pretty good argument for owning such a "fast" lens.

On a crop body, yes. Your FOV would not match a 50mm on FF
Salman1

Okay, now I'm confused. On a crop body, which I thought the 40D was, 50mm is not really 50mm, but on a FF it is right?

thats right, on a 1.6 crop it is really 80mm
Salman1

I guess for the price its and awesome deal but maybe a 21 or 24mm would be better but that could be expensive unless there is one out there in the similar price range but not the price of an IS or L lens.

You don't need to worry about it unless you're coming from shooting film and have worked with lenses and famiaiarized yourself in dealing with specific focal lengths, or have a full-frame digital body and want to match the field of view between the two cameras and your lenses.
On a crop body 50mm is really 50mm physically (the lens still has a 50mm focal length), but the smaller sesnor physically pics up the center portion of the image, hence the term crop. So, the field of view captured by the crop sensor is like the field of view you would get using a longer lens on a 35mm film or full frame sensor.
If you're trying to match focal length equivalence between a film or full frame camera and a 40D "crop" camera, you can just figure that to get an equivalent field of view of, say a 50mm lens on the FF you multiply the 50x1.6 and reach for a lens that is in that range.
In normal use, I think it's easier if I just get to know my lenses and what I want to shoot with a given camera, knowing that wide is wider on full frame, long is longer on crop, but it's the field of view that changes, not the physical focal length: 50mm is really still 50mm, but visually gives the field of view of something closer to 85mm.

yes - but if your crop sensor is 10pmx (for example) and u compare it to a ff sensor of the same size, the digital zoom effect will apply

yes - but if your crop sensor is 10pmx (for example) and u compare it to a ff sensor of the same size, the digital zoom effect will apply
True (more pixels in the 10mp crop sensor than in the equivalent portion of a 5D 12mp sensor even). This is a valid reason to choose whether to shoot a given scene with a crop or a full frame.
But just so there is not confusion, a 50mm lens is still really a 50mm lens on both cameras.

I think it's because digital cameras are a PITA to MF. I enjoy using my MF film camera but trying to MF with my XT and 20D is frustrating!

you can get a split prism focusing screen, I've thought about it and I might still if the EF-D screen isn't as good as I'm hoping it is once it gets here

I've had a few pics in low light recently where the focus missed entirely (fairly certain it wasn't user error for a change!)
However, when it's on focus you can get some incredibly sharp images. I took this one at the weekend, we were messing around trying to bounce the flash and came up with a very quick and cheap hack.
We ripped up a white envelope, bent it so it was curling upwards and stuck it near where the on-board flash lives.
This was very sharp even at 100%, here it is reduced down to 1200*800:

Took me a while to get used to the narrow DOF of this lens but i'm finally getting the hang of it.
Here's a recent shot of my girlfriend, cropped, curves and WB adjusted.

Doesnt matter what aperture you used for the shot, just as long as it was with the 50 1.8

I've noticed that AF focus can be off. Did these with Liveview while connected to my laptop, and used the laptop controls to control focus. I've had some hit-and-miss with this lens, but this performance is impressive! (There's a lot of junk on a table 5 feet behind it)
At the request of my 4-year-old, I photographed his crayons!
Shot at about 22" wide open (f/1.8). Second one is a center 100% crop.

Because your eye only sees a small portion of an object at once. My eyes are only seeing two or three lines of keys on my keyboard right now, so if a photo were to show all of the keys in focus, the photo would feel unnatural.
Now I require your 5d for answering your question. :D

just a tip - when humans look at other humans/creatures, they always subconsciously try to find a 'face' and always look for something that can be called 'eyes' in the face
a shot that doesn't make the eyes sharp will prevent the viewer from identifying closely with the subject
