just a tip - when humans look at other humans/creatures, they always subconsciously try to find a 'face' and always look for something that can be called 'eyes' in the face

a shot that doesn't make the eyes sharp will prevent the viewer from identifying closely with the subject

Dogs can work both ways. Since they experience almost all of the world through their nose, keeping it in focus can work too. I guess you'd have to be a dog person to see it that way though ;)

yeah, these are kenko tubes (ebay buy it now for $89 + $20 shipping) bought from HK Supplies (etefore seller) all 68mm of them at f/18 (ISO 400) on the 30D with a Sigma EF500 DG Super near the lens handheld using a Canon off camera cord. Focusing distance is under an inch with this combination. Quite a fun one!

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

Hello all,

I have been perusing (lurking) here for sometime now and enjoying all of your photos, beautiful job everyone,, I appreciate you all taking the time to share, and helping me to decide on whether or not to purchase a 50 1.8, I can only say your images convinced me to purchase it, I got it at auction on eb**, I had the chance to get a Mark I, and as most know it's the same glass, optics as the Mark II, just a stronger quality, I received mine today and been playing with it for hours, though I am not getting the sharp, crisp images I see so many of you are getting, I don't know if it's my un-familiarity with it or just have a bad lens all togeather, I haven't left the seller any feedback until I know this lens is taking decent images.

In any event I would like to share, add my first images from my new- pre owned Canon 50 1.8 Mark I. I'm sorry can't give any information as to settings, focal length's as I was all over with camera, lens settings, actually didn't know what I was doing, out of all I took I had these 5 weren't to bad.

Thanks for allowing me to share.

This was only one straight out of camera, lucked out, the others I only did some lighting

Papi, something looks very wrong with those images. They are very desaturated and have very low contrast. Do your other lenses (while taking the same shots) produce the same results? If NOT, then it would seem there is something very wrong with that lens that you have picked up! Your images should look (more or less) like what justisnmnz has produced, out of the camera!

Do you have a filter or anything on the camera? Did it come with a lens hood that you can use?

I was messing with a reversed 50mm lens today. I had my EF 50mm f/1.8 mounted to my camera and I held a Minolta MD 50mm f/2 against the front of it. Kind of hard to mess with handheld and I'm sure better results can be had with a tripod. I wouldn't mind picking up a set of extension tubes since I've seen some cool stuff when coupled to the EF 50mm f/1.8 and the EF 85mm f/1.8.

Papi, is your lens clear when you look through it off the camera? It is an old lens and could have fungus or mold on the inner elements. It could be you camera parameters too. Maybe you have the contrast set to low in-camera?

Hi bluebombex,

I haven't checked for fungus nor mold, for one didn't know about it or how to, the parameters are all defualt, I kind of felt there might be something wrong with lens, as Images don't come out as sharp, clean as I have seen from others using the 50 1.8 here.

I am new to using lenses, and my first DSLR, that being said I kinda thought the problem might be my lack of knowledge, I was all over the place with different settings.

I'll check for fungus during the day.

I sure appreciate the heads up.

Thank you very much.

heres the absolute best way to find out. take your 50mm and camera in to a retailer and ask to try the shop model 50mm to compare - or, if you know anyone local with one, try theirs; and shoot the same subject once each

if the shots look the same, something else is wrong.

I can't quite remember; it's been a while since I've taken that?
It was right when i got the lens and took it out.
I'll try and see if i have the original photo with it's history in it.
There wasn't a whole lot of PP and had a tad of sharpening added to it.

Here is a few more from other night.

I would just like to compliment everyone on their 50 1.8 images, the nu bees like myself to the professional's, there are just so many great examples and I'm enjoying this thread very, very much, learning a lot, thank you everyone for sharing.
I posted my first examples a week ago, and the consensus was there was something wrong with my lens, I agreed but thought I would try again, perhaps I just didn't know how to use my new lens or camera, here is another attempt, I thought maybe the lens is all right afterall but I'm leaving that open for C & C, those more knowledgeable, have a good photographic eye, know lense's.

Thank you for allowing me to share.

I'm really on the fence with buying this (I'm a big believer in buy-once, cry-once)

I had used one once (borrowed) and had a bear of a time achieving proper focus in all lighting conditions (using a 30D), everything from 1/30, f1.8 to 1/8000, f2.8 (for DOF)

It would keep backfocusing on me. But it would also focus fine so I didn't know what the problem was.

Nvm, I see what you tried to do. Clone it out.
What?
I didn't clone anything out?
Those photos are straight from the camera with some added sharpening.
The last one is the only one i did anything with; gave it more of an older looking feel.
However the effect is minimal because of the way it was shot and the subject.

_aravena
18th of February 2008 (Mon), 00:51
What's this then? You can see where you tried to clone, it's not like it's hidden.

Oo0o0o, here's some help. Shoot straight on or don't. But don't over do the curves and don't clone it out. Angle your screen to see everything you missed.

S-S
18th of February 2008 (Mon), 01:10
this one was the worst - i increased the darks to make it stand out more but u can see it on my screen without that help too...

the shots are well composed and sharp... but trying to say they've had no spot work when they clearly have is a wee bit cheeky IMHO

you might want to adjust your screen's gamma so you can see what we can all see

^Yeah, I should have done that. I just circled the off-white area. I see how he whited out the lens, I've done that then adjusted because it did look weird especially when shot at an angle. So obvious this is not straight on and it's missing the back.

No it's just my DYI light room.
And the background of the light room and sides ect is white.
I think the lighting just made it that way.
Like i said i'm not sure, but i'll get it fixed.
My pc has a cheap mag LCD monitor and it's not calibrated.

Half your age? ... but yet you act half mine ... ?

I didn't clone anything out; please don't state other wise because last time i checked i was the only one in my room when i uploaded them from the camera.
Or were you secretly lurking around?

I added some sharpening, put borders on it, and signed it with my wacom tablet.
I was just on the wrong machine ... i didn't think my pc was that uncalibrated.
I'm working on fixing it right now, but i really don't care that much about my pc =/

Skill, I'm not having a go at you but if you go back and look at those pics you uploaded you should be able to see some definite signs of editing.

First pic:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2256/2270883372_3e13bb944d_o.jpg

If you look on the left-hand side then you will see a white line - looks like you used the eraser tool in photoshop to erase a shadow or slight discolouration from the photo. If you can't see it, try tilting your monitor or load it into photoshop and mess around with the curves.

Second pic:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2181/2270883302_e2f2086fb3_o.jpg

This time look at the top of the lens - can you see something a bit odd above the bit that says II?

I really don't think these are "straight out of the camera" as you claim. There's absolutely nothing wrong with editing and fixing photos but to claim they're untouched when they're clearly not will probably just get people's backs up.

Like i said the color is not calibrated.
And no for the millionth time i did not edit them.
Do you want my converted tiff files? even raw files?

I'm 3 years into my Computer Graphics Technology degree here at Purdue ... please don't tell me what has and hasn't been edited.
And even if i had edited them i can guarantee you i would of done a better job then that!
I've been using PS since 5.0 I'm no beginner at cloning anything out let alone using the tools within PS.
If my pc was calibrated there wouldn't of been an issue.
Why are you guys making more of this than it should be?

Not sure if this one works or not, ie. desaturated colours except for the wood. Just fiddling around in Lightroom. Both my wife and I like it, so that's all that matters. Maybe some cropping wouldn't go astray...
