Well, THANX everyone. 2 nights worth of looking at every photo left in this thread and now I just clicked the "purchase" button. I even clicked on the "2 day" delivery - it was only $13.50 extra. Still the total was under a "C" note.
Now I'm anxious for the delivery.
Thanks again.
And now for my next act.......................
.....................
.........tonight I hit the "purchase" button for some Extension tubes.

First day with this lens.
Happy with the pictures so far. Like some said, auto-focusing in dim light and under f/1.8 or 2 is kinda tricky. Make use of the canon autofocus customizable points and make us of the manual focus.

Shot of my little cousin - window lit but was a bit late on an overcast day.

Was this taken with the 50mm 1.8 and then cropped down to 100% or was another lens used? It turned out quite good. I would not have thought to use a 50mm with this shot though.

I LOVE my 50mm. It is now offically my only working lens, since I dropped my kit on the floor at B&H yesterday and the autofocus doesn't work. Oops. At least I'm going on a little lens shopping spree at the end of this month.

The only thing I can say bad about this lens is that the subject/background separation isn't that good b/c of the 5 aperture blades, and that the 1.4 is better in this regard. Still perfectly usable, but my images don't show it, except maybe the second one. Look for images with the camera close to the subject and far away from any background to see what I mean.

Also, be careful with focusing. New users coming from the kit lens, you will have trouble with the shallow DOF if you don't pay attention. I would select the center af point and reframe. Look at my second shot. Her hair is in focus, not her eyes. For a while I was convinced I had front focus issues. I never actually tested it, but it was probably my error, not the camera's.

For the price, this is an essential in the bag of every canon shooter if you don't have the 1.4.

Well here's some samples:

^^^don't judge your bokeh on this image, since i was shooting on program auto and due to the trauma of previously dropping my kit lens and breaking it, I accidentally stopped down to f/8 instead of leaving it wide open. The bokeh is actually quite good. Not as smooth as the 1.4 USM, but it's still good, and for the 70 bucks I payed for this lens on Amazon...

These pictures look disturbing to me. Looks like cock fights (which are illegal and highly condemned in our country) and the dog, sad to say, looks injured to me. The colors on his fur and the area he is lying in look to be blood stained. All look like night-shots with camera flash. I hope I am wrong.

They look processed to look like that.

The chickens are probably just... chickens. Add some color effects and a distinct vignette and you get a snuff film sorta look ;)

The dog is just a white and brown dog with the brown accentuated to look reddish. Dark vignettes make pics feel creepy :)

cock fighting is a very natural everyday thing in the philippines and so are many other things that would easily bother alot of people. its just the fact of life! just shows how big and diff the world is. now, the hard part is to understand why we do such things? ;)

You could catch a cock or pit fight at any of several houses in my neighborhood growing up as well. Doesn't make it any less disturbing.

The dog is fine. That's the dog's coloring. It's not blood.

I don't know if the chickens are fighting or not, but I see no reason to think that they are other than the darkness and narrow focus of the image.

Lol...well, in my case the pets came first. They got disgusted with the quality of photos I was taking of them and made me get a new camera (Rebel XTi).... after the new Jeep and the new Trailer of course. No telling what they'll make me buy next!! :D I suspect it will be the 70-200mm f/4 L lens tho:mrgreen:

Nice lens when it works. My experience is that its AF is somewhat innacurate (even with good lighting conditions).

One more, Iso 100, f1.8 1/4000 on 400d. I took samples from f1.8 up to f22 and the results depend on the AF accuracy. These photos as the previous are without any processing right from the camera.

paparios,

First, that's a nice composition!

Second, a key thing about this lens is that it's not so good at f/1.8! Besides the fact that 1.8 can give a very narrow depth of field that will make it hard to get much of your subject in focus, the fact is that this lens can be noticeably soft wide open. So, my advice is to shoot stopped down as much as you can, depending on the result you are after. Try some shots at f/2 and f/2.8 -- in my experience the lens becomes quite sharp in that range.

The 50 1.8 is capable of producing some fantastic images, but it still is inexpensive in its optics and build. I think of this lens as a "learning" lens, one of the first lenses to by and explore creative possibilities. Then, if you love those creative possibilities, go for the quality glass. The 50 f/1.4 isn't ultra-expensive, but it can help the 50 1.8 "dreams" come true!

The camera always focuses with the aperture wide open.

The aperture the camera uses to take the picture has no bearing at all on the focus.

It does affect how sharp the image is, but the reality is that this lens often messes up when focusing. I have a lot of images at all aperture ranges that are tack sharp on something.. but not what was under the focal point.

I've heard that (AF problems in general). I haven't had this lens in a long time (after some testing I passed it on to my daughter and got the 1.4). When I did try it out, my main observations was the softness at wide-open, and I didn't see excessive focusing problems as a whole, but I have heard from users that this does happen, and it looks like this is likely the case in the above pic (but I can't tell where the camera was trying to focus. Perhaps this was a combination of issues?

On the cat picture, the branches in front of its ear look pretty sharp.

When it's sharp, it's sharp, which I really like. It's infuriating when it keeps missing though.

I will completely concur with the above statement. My problem was my "keep" rate due to OOF issues was low when compared to my other lenses. Unfair comparison (price-wise), absolutely, but ultimately my own keep-rate made me decide to sell my 50/1.8 (and got the incredibly sharp 85/1.8 )

paparios

Yes, I have also bought a 85mm f1.8 which I have seen is higly considered. The 50 1.8 is nice but, I would say, only around half of the photos I have taken with it are on focus (meaning the 400d indicated the focus has been reached and so I shot the photo). As I said this morning I tested it from f1.8 to f22, with the same scene and for instance the f18 shot was sharper than the f20 and this less sharp than the f22, all this with the camera on a tripod.

Well...this MAY be my last ever post with this lens. I had to have my original replaced due to focusing issues. I took this photo in Cades Cove (Great Smoky Mountains) over the weekend for the first time with the NEW lens. Last night I was picking it up to put on the camera and dropped the lens and it landed flush on to the lens cap on a concrete floor. The lens is now in two picecs. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be. Instead of replacing it I may just go ahead and put the money towards an 85mm f1.8 which I was going to buy anyway.

Oh well...sorry for the sad story...here is the photo...

I hope nobody minds the nifty with macro tubes....

This was shot with the nifty and a 20mm tube at 1/5, f/8, 800 ISO. This is the full frame, resized to 25% to fit here. Sharpening was set to 3 in DPP. Light was natural, diffused light from a window. I focused manually using a tethered laptop connection and Live View, watching the laptop screen, and slid the camera back and forth along the table top (no tripod used) until the focus was as I wanted.

I don't use this lens for regular photography, but as a cheap way to explore the "macro" world it is not too bad at all. With more tubes (I can go up to 68mm) I can get larger magnifications than this.

Thanks. Here's a shot with 68mm of tubes. This is with different lighting conditions. Exif is 1.0 second, f/16, 800 ISO. The shot is uncropped, just slightly sharpened in DPP (3 out of 10), and resized to 25%.

Oh, and for good measure, I've added a photo of as much as I could fit in of an AA battery with 68mm of tubes. I'm guessing that's a magnification factor of about 2X, or perhaps a little more. You can see the DOF is only about 1mm or 2mm at the most.

A question for pretty much everyone that had taken really sharp photos with this lens. What did you set your sharpness value to? (in 30D, I think it goes from 0 to 7).
I typically used 2 for portrait, but I can't really say that the photos that I took as sharp as the ones that are posted here.
So I'm really wondering whether I should increase the sharpness from my 30D camera setting.

Thanks

I don't know whether you'd consider my shots sharp, but I shoot raw with neutral picture style and sharpness to 0. I sort out sharpening in post processing.

In DPP, if I nailed focus in the first place I will set sharpness to 3 (out of 10). If I'm a little bit off with the focus then I will go up to 5. If I feel the need to go above 5 then I question whether the photo is worth keeping. If it is still soft, but I really want to keep it, I may go to 7 as a maximum.

In Lightroom, if I nailed the focus I will leave sharpening at the default 25. If I need to sharpen a bit more I will go to 75 without much concern and 100 if I have to (out of 150). If I think I need to go above 100 then, once again, I question whether the photo is a keeper.

The "macro" shots I posted recently (on page 149) were processed in DPP with sharpening set to 3.

in-camera-processing is fairly heavy-handed and limited compared to post-processing in lightroom or photoshop... you would be better off shooting raw and processing afterwards using your software arsenal to fine-tune values like colour, sharpness, noise, lighting contrast etc
