Jason C - would you care to elaborate on lighting and exif? That is unbelievably sharp!I apologize for not stating that in the first place:

Self Portrait
1/50th sec @ f/2.8
ISO 400
Tripod used
Existing window light only
Remote shot using HP 9335 Laptop,
and one long wooden spoon to take the exposure.

I'm taking Photo 10 at a community college in the evenings, and the current assignment lighting. The above pic of me is for the window lighting only portion of the assignment.

Time was around 4:45 PM, the window light was coming in the east facing window. So, the main light was being reflected from the building east of my window and into my room.

Exposure was full manual, Adobe RGB, Sunny WB with Picture Style custom defined for "zero" enhancments. PP using DPP, switched to monochrome, edited an "s" curve and added a little sharpness.

there is no way my copy is that sharp at 2.8 makes me want to get it calibrated. do you have to physcially prove your lens is off, or can you just ship it to sigma and they will work on it regardless? Jason, you got an excellent copy friend!

beautiful shot :)
using a 5D is cheating though :P lol
but really..
lovely shot, i'd try a vignette around the edges, the bokeh at the bottom of the frame is quite harsh and relatively distracting, in my oppinion,
eyes look awesome! very sharp and a lovely shot to look at :)

the image sharpness you seem to get from it is immac in alot of evry1's shots.. The shallow DOF you can get with this lense is crazy! im looking forward to the day i get it, coz i will be out the whole day :P

btw lense caps come standard with it right? does this lense need a hood at all?

thanks

Lens cap yes (as with every lens should come with now a days), and lens hood - no (i guess depends on where you buy it from).
I finally bought my lens hood for this lens sometime 1-2 weeks ago and was shipped out last week; it should be here today or sometime this week ;)

IMO no. The glass is set deeply in the lens...enough to avoid most flare and enough to protect the glass from getting hit.

shack - I agree with you. However, I did purchase a rubber screw on hood for less than five dollars. Having heard that the lens doesn't take much of a jolt to separate the two lens-halfs, it seemed like a cheap investment.

It's a little soft, it was hand held and not real bright outside. But it doesn't bother me on this, I think it worked.

oh yea, you shouldn't worry about it, this lens really is a wonderful lens, I bought it specially to take portraits of my kid and its doing a wonderful job, when i have the money maybe i'll get the sigma 30 f1.4 since this feels a little long at times but for an introduction to primes this is a great lens.

whats the focusing distance like?

focusing distance is pretty close...probably 4-5 inches is my guess...i set my camera on a tripod...hooked it up to the computer to do remote shooting...used the computer to see when i was in focus...and then took the shots...all this was just with the 36mm tube...i'm excited to get em out and try em more soon

awesome stuff, always wanted to get a set of tubes for the 85mm 1.8, that'd be awesome.. 85 1.2L would be even more sweet with tubes :P shame i dont have one :( *sighs*

Nice, maybe cause I never looked but where are inversed rings to turn lenses around?

powerslave
30th of April 2008 (Wed), 15:05
Well you don't necessarily have to find the exact spec reverse ring. You can stick two 52mm-58mm or whatever dimensions your lenses are converters and make it work.

It's really potent.
