This is a great lens for the price. Only had mine for a week and still getting to grips with it. I was playing with depth of field the other day and this is what I came up with.

I'm still pretty new to photography, so I know these pale in comparison to other's pictures :o The weather's not been so great since I've had it, but I love the few shots I've been able to get with it. I'm excited to get better at it :D
These were taken in the pouring rain, but my daughter trooped through it. And, yes, her hair really is pink
So many great shots on this thread. I just had to comment on the shot with you daughter on the tree. Pretty awsome shot! Print and frame that baby!

1st post here. I just spent 3+ hours looking at all the pics here. I have a 50mm 1.8 sitting on my front porch for when I get home to couple to my new XTi. I'm psyched, right now I am using the kit 18-55mm lens, and I have to say I am less than happy with the quality it produced. I mean they are ok but indoor shots were driving me NUTS. I'm super excited to get a lens that's faster so I can finally get some good indoor shots with that bokeh effect I love so much.
I'll have to post some pics. Does anyone use Picasa?

I couldn't decide whether to post this in the 50mm f/1.8 thread or the Bokeh thread, so I thought I'd put it in both.

OMFG!!! I just got finished looking through all 172 pages of this thread and all I can say is WOW!
I'm going to be buying me a lens ASAP. While reviewing this thread my friend said that he has a 50mm f1.4 he'd let me borrow and I'm going to be picking that up shortly from him.
I'm a bit new in photography but have about 5 years experience repairing cameras though.
I'm looking forward to any criticisms that I may receive good or bad so that I can improve.
Oh yeah.. I'm Shooting a Canon XSi I recently purchased.
Thanks,

OK I got the lens yesterday... and I couldn't get a sharp picture to save my life! I really need to practice more today. The F/1.8 shots on here are SO much sharper than mine came out. That said, it was dark & dreary and I was handholding everything. I'm gonna post soon some pics with this and ask for some input.

My two flower shots up there ^^^ were taken handheld. But it is tricky. You only have a millimetre or so either way and a different part of the subject is in focus. Or nothing is. It not only takes a lot of practice, you'll probably need to take several shots of each subject before you'll get the keeper. But it's well worth it.
I'm gonna post soon some pics with this and ask for some input.
I for one look forward to seeing them.

love it - just be careful on 1.8 - the AF isn't always too reliable and the shallow DOF could become your enemy.

Here's my first contribution on my second day with the lens and more to come. This lens is so fun and sharp for the price. Sure it seems to hunt around when focusing and it is soft wide open but stopped down to 2.8 this thing is almost as sharp as my 28-135 for less than a third of the price.
Here's Emma stopped down to f/2.8 straight out of the camera:

With this picture of the Stone of Free Speech on London's Hampstead Heath, it's worth looking at the largest size (click the picture for all sizes), not just to see how clear and sharp the "nifty" is - even at f/1.8 - but also to have a laugh at what the local youth calls "free speech".

Beat this sharpness people. This is why my has a red ring painted around the barrel.
This is my friend, taken w/ a 48" umbrella and a 16X24 softbox. Only pp was converting to jpeg, fixing a few little spots with the sopt healing brush, and resizing w/ copywrite.

thank you. i actually forgot what PP i did but it was minimal.
i shoot RAW. so my PP usually is something like
in camera raw add: light fill, vibrance
open raw in photoshop
shadow + highlights (shadow add 1% and highlights add 1% or 2%)
sharpen if needed (image mode set to LAB color then unsharp mask the lightness channel)
it usually takes me about 30 seconds to do it all so i dont really remember. but its probably one of the above (or combination of the above)
here is the untouched photo. you can see the color vibrance is not like the one above.

This is not a great picture by any means - just having a little fun. But it does show what Nifty is capable of. No flash, taken in a dark room under the table lamp, handheld, focused at letter "U". No sharpening whatsoever, no post-processing (just cropped and played with color saturation).
