That'de be a great background. You should resize it 16:10 in resolutions like 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 if possible so people could use it on their 20" and 24" monitors.

I'm a big fan of the f1.8. Granted the f1.4 is a lot more lens, but it's also a lot more money. That makes a big difference for someone like me on a limited budget. You might be happier with the f1.4, but you won't be unhappy with the f1.8.

My best friend...;) Taken yesterday while we were unwinding on the back porch after a long day of work.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h89/TheSteveMadden/EOS_14336_f1.jpg

I was evaluating the AF performance of the 1.8 with static objects. At f/1.8 with good technique, I was getting 80% keepers and 40% perfect focus, which leads me to believe my earlier problems wide open with portraits have to do with my subject moving.

That being said... I see a 1.4 in my future if only for the FTM and better build.

I have a feeling I'll have an urge to pick one up used very soon. Is there any other way ? I got mine used with Hood for $110 shipping included. Was a real good deal paying $100 for this lens with bonus hood. (although hood is completely worthless it makes this baby lens feel like a big boy:lol: )

It is a fun lens to play with, I dont really trust just using a 50mm prime as my only lens when shooting but the focus with blur it can do is a really amazing thing and all for like a hundred bucks! Try FM buy and sell board if no luck here, either here or there you'll usually find one. I might be selling mine soon too because I want to try out the 1.4 version.

50mm 1.8 MK1 cult member here....

take the lens off and reverse it on the body. The nifty 50 actually makes one hell of a macro lens!! At f/1.8 there's no problem seeing your subject in the viewfinder :)

A quarter fills the entire frame!! This was handheld in poor light. Notice the edges are real real soft... lets stop it down!!!

without a ring light, external flash+offshoe, or some better constant lighting then an IKEA expresso mini desk light.. f/18 was a bit noisey (See below). A tripod would work well too... but I think this clearly shows the reverse lens capabilities of the nifty fifty. The 35mm F/2 should have even more zoom, and will get tested later this week when I have a chance. I have heard of people hack apart extra body caps and gluing a filter ring on backwards so you can screw the lens on the body. I have a hoya 1b skylight filter on the thing now, and the damn thing fits snug into the little body mount like its supposed to be there!! Pretty sweet actually.

You must have used extension tubes or did super cropping right? Since it wont focus any closer then 1.5ft you couldnt have done it any other way right? Its a great lens though, why I call it Canons Best lens. For three unbeatable reasons. Its sharp, its fast, and its very cheap. Those three things no other canon lens really has, except maybe its bigger brother the 1.4 version but it costs 4x the price.

It seems like an set of extension tubes is very smart if you have any primes (although I haven't heard good things about the 85 1.8 and macro I have on the way), a standard zoom, and a good telephoto (I think you can do macro with the 70-200's and some extension tubes.)

I did not use any extension tubes or anything other than the lens itsself to take these photos. I reversed the lens on the mount! Take the lens off the camera, hold the front of the lens to the body and point the back of the lens at the subject. I think you'll find that you have to be 3-4" from the sugject to get focus on it... and you obviously have to use range to adjust the focus.

Take the lens off the camera, set it on the table. With your right hand hold the camera as you would normally. Adjust the camera to manual mode, and set the shutter speed to 1/100th. With your left hand, pick up the lens, but instead of placing the rear element into the body like you normally would, rotate the lens around so the front is facing the sensor. Its on backwards, so it obviously wont lock on and function as it normally would. You have to hold it against the body. Now, point the back of the lens at the subject as if you were going to take a photo. The focus mechanism does not work so you have to adjust your distance to the object to obtain focus. The 50mm lens, reversed, will focus on an object around 3-4" away. So place something on a table, like a quarter. Bend over and get the lens right down 3" fom the quarter. You'll have to look through the viewfinder to obtain focus... your only means to change focus is the distance the lens is away from the object. Adjust the exposure with your right index finger on the dial, and when you are good and ready (focus is in the sweet spot and you have shutter set), hit the button. Review and adjust lighting, exposure, or focus until you get results.

Thats the basics...

Advanced use would be to adjust the aperture on the lens like I did with those quarters. There is a button on your camera that you have probably never used before. its under the lens release button, right next to where the lens mounts the body. Its the DOF preview button. In most cases on the XT when you are stopped down and hit the button, the viewfinder just turns dark and you think to yourself "what a useless button".

Set the camera to manual mode and adjust your aperture to f/11, 1/100th, iso 400. Now this is the tricky part. In order for this to work, you have to remove the lens while holding that preview button, while the camera is set on the aperture you want the lens to be at, while the camera is on. So go ahead and hit the perview button. if you look at the front of the lens, you will notice that the aperture is closed (let go and you'll see it open). So while its closed, hit the lens release button and pop the lens off. Notice the aperture is still closed.

Now that you have the lens off the camera, with the aperture closed... you can shoot with it as if it was stopped down normally hooked up correctly to the body. Only thing is, if you want to adjust the aperture you have to put the lens back on the camera and repeat those steps. The camera at that point is just an aperture switcher :)

Whats the point of all this? Look at those quarter photos and you will see why I stopped the lens down. The edges at f/1.8 and f/4 are VERY VERY VERY soft, and at f/11 its nearly clear. Also, the distance you have to be at to get focus is larger with the aperture closed up. So at f/1.8 you may only have 1/4" distance where you can snap the shot and get a clean image. At f/18, you have a whole 3/4" to play around with where the focus is good.

It may seem silly at first taking the lens off the camera and holding it on backwards. You can get REAL results this way... this shot was done with a 17-85mm IS lens, held on backwards!!

Okay, you kind of annoyed me there (no offense) with your whoel lesson on aperture and all, but I am still curious, is it safe to use the camera attached via the front element with it not mounted? I really want to see a photo, cause I am having trouble believing how this could be possible (and if it's safe.)

PS, perhaps you didn't realise, but I would think you'de meter out your shot with the lens attached before reversing it and using random settings.

You can still get a rough idea for metering with the lens reversed. Obviously you can't change aperature, but you can adjust shutter, and you still get the meter readout in the view finder.

I really love it. Because it has such great depth of field I am finding it really shines when you stop down to 2.8 or better. This tightens things up a bit and the focus is more precise over a larger area.

This uses the 20mm Kenko tube and is slightly cropped. The photo below shows the efect of tubes with this lens. This lens is a little short to take close ups of insects that are nervous but this was taken in the middle of a tomato plant so it would be hard to be much farther back without something else getting in the way.

I really like this shot but I have a question. I can see that you went for AF or Manual focus on the eyes but due to the depth of the face and distance from nose to eyes it causes the nose to be out of focus. Is that something you did intentionally? Wouldn't have been slightly better to choose a depth of field that gave you that distance from nose to eyes, or would that have pulled the background too far into focus? Just wondering.

Well you see, you must ask yourself a couple questions

Do you really care about f2.8 (the Sigma)?
Do you want to carry a heavy lens (The F/4 is much lighter)

I own the 70-200 F/4L, and I am very happy, the F/4 doesn't bug me, but I also have an 85 1.8 and other primes coming to back me up speed wise.

Actually that shot was more of an accident, my dog is very hard to shoot and she won't stay still for very long even with no flash. You are correct the dof is too shallow which makes me think I should re-shoot it again sometime.
