Here's one of my kids shot with a newly acquired Nifty. For no reason I had the ISO on 1600, shot at F3.2. I guess the focus is acceptable, but I'm pretty new so what the hell do I know.:D

C and C welcome.

BTW, after posting, the tone seems a little pinker than I experience in LR.

this is VERY VERY cool - you've told a story with the lens and made good use of its wideopenness - only thing is the shoes were a little confusing for me at first glance, they look like a climbing harness - but that might just be me

This is a great little lens for the price. Sometimes AF isnt always right, so taking two or more pictures re-AF'ing each time ensures correct focusing.
These shots were taken with my 40D and all have some sort of PPing.

finally got to test it. its a nice lens. i think i will like it even more when i get to test it more during the day and get use to taking night shots. these were taken inside with no flash. the second shot was on the island, the first shot being handheld.

edit - resizing with office manager sucks. it really degrades the picture. my original raw to jpeg conversion is so much sharper and focus is correct. how do you guys resize and keep the same IQ so it can be posted?

Bought the 50mm 1.8 a few weeks ago after reading about it on another site then coming here and seeing all the awesome photos.

Auto levels, auto colour and sharpening. I don't normally do any post processing but the original was a bit dull since it was taken after midnight on a cloudy evening (we're just coming out of 24hr daylight).

I finally got my camera yesterday (450D) and because of this thread I skipped the kit lens and went straight for the 50mm. I couldn't be happier with the decision. :)

A couple randoms from yesterday as I was trying things out (and desperately trying to remember everything I learned about exposure from college photography courses).

photoshop ftw

You can also use ImageMagick ( http://imagemagick.org ). It is open source and provides lots of useful command-line tools to work with graphics. You can use it to batch resize all files in a directory.

Convert your RAW images to JPGs, and place a copy of the JPGs you want to resize (since this process will overwrite your input files) into a directory. Then open up the command line (Windows key + R, type cmd and hit enter), change to the directory (e.g. type cd c:\your\photo\folder and hit enter) where you have placed your files and then run this command (as an example):

FOR %a IN (*.JPG) DO (mogrify -filter Lanczos -quality 90 -resize 25% -unsharp 0.2 "%a")Now, all your JPGs in that directory will be resized and still retain high quality. You can also specify to resize to a certain width by a certain height (in pixels) as well as other ways: http://dptnt.com/2007/09/batch-resize-images-using-imagemagick/

Saves you a couple hundred $$$ on the price of PhotoShop ;)

After a lot of reading thru this post i was almost put off buying the 50 1.8 II due to the af problems and noise that some have described ,but being on a tight budget i was going to buy one anyway. As luck would have it a mate got me one for my recent 40th birthday and though its only been a couple of days i definately cant complain about the af accuracy or noise and i love the shallow dof that it produces.

I'm really interested in bying 3 diferent lenses for my canon 350d, and i would really like to get some recomendations about. I allready have a Canon 18-55mm and a Sigma 24-70 mm f2.8 DG EX Macro, but my idea is to replace this two by a:

Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 24-70 mm f2.8 EF L USM
Canon 70-200 mm f4 EF L IS USM

The idea is to cover all the posible ranges by the use of these three lenses.. all posible suggestion are usefull... thanks

Sounds good. The only problem I can see is that on a 350d, you may miss a bit on the wide angle, as 24mm on a crop body is only 38mm. But then again, this may not be a problem for you. Also, 24-70 is HEAVY - I'd suggest you test it out on your 350d body to see if it's ok for you, because the 24-70 is almost 3 times the weight of the 350d!
Other than that, though, you can't really go wrong with your lens choice.

S-S
25th of August 2008 (Mon), 00:47
consider 17-55 f/2.8 IS rather than 24-70... there will be a small gap between 55 and your 70-200 but not really a noticeable one as far as practical shooting goes - and the 17-55 is much wider, which if you are used to the 18-55 you might miss. and the IQ of 17-55 is really excellent, many wedding togs use it (who shoot on crop cameras)

50 f/1.8 is a given really, very cheap and still good value even so

Quick question for you Nifty Fifty shooters... I just got mine and am wondering whether more people use the lens on Auto Focus or Manual Focus?

My quick impression was that Manual Focus provided better control to achieve the desired shot... but would love to hear how others use the lens.

I had problems with my first 50 but B&H kindly exchanged it for me and the new lens is as sharp as the photos in here that convinced me to buy it in the first place. Even with the issues, given the cost and the image quality when you get a good one, it's worth purchasing (even if you have to do it twice:)).

Took these today of my youngest playin with her bubble machine.
These are wonderful! I love the color you got in the bubble - it really adds an element of depth and fun to the photos. And your daughter is adorable.

I wear glasses so I trust the autofocus more than my corrected eyesight. However, when I was determining that my first 50 was front focusing I depended on comparing the MF and AF to see how bad the problem was with lens. If you feel your focus area is off in the images you're taking I would suggest doing a series of focus test shots.

hey guys. I just got my 50mm. The DoF is amazing. I have a few questions though.

While testing out my 50mm I realized that its kinda noisy when focusing compared to my 18-55mm kit lens. Its my second lens so I don't really have experiences with lenses. I know I'm not supposed to expect alot in terms of build quality in a $85 lens. Are yours similar?

And is there much difference is shooting a portrait in f1.8 and something like f2.5, which would make the subject as sharp as possible and at the same time blur the background?
