While testing out my 50mm I realized that its kinda noisy when focusing compared to my 18-55mm kit lens. Its my second lens so I don't really have experiences with lenses. I know I'm not supposed to expect alot in terms of build quality in a $85 lens. Are yours similar?
Never paid attention to this, but it's the only brand new lens I currently own.
And is there much difference is shooting a portrait in f1.8 and something like f2.5, which would make the subject as sharp as possible and at the same time blur the background?
Well, the DoF would get really really thin so if you focused on the eyes the nose might be out of focus at 1.8. Plus, according to all of the feedback here, the lens is sharpest at 2.0 and up.

hey guys. I just got my 50mm. The DoF is amazing. I have a few questions though.
While testing out my 50mm I realized that its kinda noisy when focusing compared to my 18-55mm kit lens. Its my second lens so I don't really have experiences with lenses. I know I'm not supposed to expect alot in terms of build quality in a $85 lens. Are yours similar?

Congrats on getting your lens (that was fast!) Yes, the 50mm is pretty noisy when focusing (as you say, you cannot expect much for what the lens costs). As long as it focuses correctly (no front or back focusing) it's fine.
Regarding f/1.8 or smaller - I agree with ignutzz; it depends on what you are shooting (and how close you are). If you are pretty close to your subject then f/1.8 might result in DoF that is too shallow (e.g. as ignutzz says, eyes in focus but nose not) but if you are further away from your subject, f/1.8 might be fine to keep your subject in focus and blur your background at the same time. Play around with your lens, shooting different subjects at different apertures. As you get to know it, you will 'learn it'. :)
Happy shooting!

this lens is noisy & a bit clunky when AF... and sometimes it hunts around for a place to settle... but aside from that its certainly a great deal for the money

No to jack this thread but your dog caught my attention.
I rescued the same dog from the pound and two veterinarian informed me that it's a pure breed beagle. However, looking around I couldn't find or haven't seen a beagle with a bigger head than the three common breed.
My beagle looks exactly like your dog. Is that a pure breed?

Yes, it's a pure breed beagle ;).
It's my sisters one, in fact my mother, my girlfriend and me we've also got one each.
My sister's beagle (male) had a 6 dog litter with my mother's beagle (female), both of them pure breed and from different parents. :D
Two of them were for my girlfriend and me and the other four were given away to some of our friends.
This one is mine (shot with the 50mm f1.8 too):

The great thing about the nifty is that it's an excellent, cheap prime (and cheaply made, but you won't find me complaining for 70 bux).
The fact you can open up to 1.8 at only 70 bux and still retain great sharpness and results is why it is so popular.
But if you have the money to get the 50L ... go get ir.

for me, i love shooting portraits, and to me, you can't have a good portrait without blur. i know i could get even more pop out of my subjects with a 1.4, but with the <$100 price tag, who can complain. i'm happy with 90/100 pictures i took with it yesterday. oh, and aside from portraits, it's a pretty versatile lens for a prime.

exif basically details all the information on your shot...tells you what type of camera/focal length/aperture/shutter speed/etc.etc.
here's some exif from your shot:
# Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/90 second = 0.01111 second
# Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 95/10 = F9.5
# ISO Speed Ratings = 200
# Original Date/Time = 2008:09:27 22:34:57
# Shutter Speed Value (APEX) = 425450/65536
Shutter Speed (Exposure Time) = 1/90 second
Aperture = F9.5
# Flash = Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode
# Focal Length = 50/1 mm = 50 mm

hi everyone...newbie here! just got my 50mm 1.4 about a week ago and i've been reading about the AF problems that some people are having.....so i tried focusing on different things to see if mine was ok...then i was trying to focus on a white wall and it wasn't focusing...it kept trying to but it couldn't and i wasn't sure if that was normal since it's a white wall and if the camera just doesn't know where to focus since there's no contrast..or is there actually anything wrong with mine? When i try to focus on things that are high in contrast then it works but when it's a more monochromatic scene...(or a bare white wall) it seems to have a hard time..is this normal?

the center AF point is always the strongest.. and no its not going to focus if you put it on a plain white wall :p as you said the AF looks for contrast.. so look for contrast and check it out.
try getting a ruler and shoot at different apertures doing a focus test to see if its front focusing or back focusing. my 50 1.4 has awesome AF and is tack sharp, even at 1.4

it is a great lens but see how at 1.8 the focus is tough in fact im having a hard time in the first two finding any focus point but in the third its the bottom of the spoon taking a lot away from the face. something to just keep an eye on. looked like he had fun though!
bauerman
20th of October 2008 (Mon), 08:03
I tried to focus on the spoon in the last shot on purpose....artistically....I guess to each their own.
Focus point in the first shot is on the waffle cone in his mouth and focus point on the second shot is his right eye. Full size shots you can see that these portions are in fact sharp. There is a very thin depth of focus at 1.8 but you make due if you want to use this lens wide open.
