^ Post here I guess, it's still f1.8 so should be all good!
Thanks HSK,

I've just got a PM back from In2Photos confirming that I should post them here. You've probably seem some of them before on the '450D users' thread....but thought I would add to the gallery here too.

These shots are the first from the Mk1 f/1.8 which I managed to get off eBay for the same price as a new Mk2 (I'm sure you know the logic in my choosing a Mk1?):

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3034/2957825992_672946defd_o.jpg

More to come when I get out & about again soon. I reckon this lens will be spending a lot of time on my 450D!

I have just joined this website and I must say this thread has just made me buy a nifty.

I can see my bank balance is not going to like this forum :)
Don't worry too much - the nifty will see you proud and save you a LOT of money if you stick with it.

A word of warning though - if you see any thread with an L or L next to the lens details (i.e. 300mm f/2.8L) just keep clear......it's that one sole letter that will break you!

I'm still resisting.....but don't know how long I'll be able to keep it up!

Ooh yea, i love the colours in these shots, especially the 2nd! never seen a leaf like that :P

I don't know what the differences are between the 2 lenses, is it just general build and motor differences?

Ooh yea, i love the colours in these shots, especially the 2nd! never seen a leaf like that :P
The leaf was really that red - some of the ones on the ground were even more vivid, but had big black spots/marks on them where they were starting to rot/decompose. I'm not sure what the vine is? I know it's not an ivy or a virginia creeper.....but as yet haven't been able to identify it.

I don't know what the differences are between the 2 lenses, is it just general build and motor differences?
The Mk1 is generally seen as a much better/higher quality build.

A metal mount rather than plastic and a much more user friendly focus ring (mid body rather than on the end as well as being smoother) It's also got a range/focus window - although I don't use that....

It's also supposed to be much better constructed. I've heard of Mk2's literally just falling apart for no reason - take a look here for example: Mk2 thaqt just fell apart!! (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Canon-EF-50mm-f-1-8-II-Lens_W0QQitemZ130262940823QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 130262940823&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)

Have a look here at a Mk1 for sale: A bit more sturdy (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Canon-EF-50mm-F1-8-Standard-lens_W0QQitemZ280277173475QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 280277173475&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)

I would say that the Mk1 is more like the little brother of the 50mm f/1.4 - comparable build & quality.

I'm not saying for one second that the Mk2 is a bad lens by any means - just looking at the photos here will make anyone agree that it is the best lens out there for the money and be in no doubt that I would be owning one too if it wasn't for Mk1!! It's just that a Mk1 makes more sense to me if it can be bought for similar money....and mine cost me £60 which is what a Mk2 sells for here in the UK.

It was a no brainer for me....:D

HSK
22nd of October 2008 (Wed), 08:43
Ahh! thanks for that information, I can see why it would be a better choice going for something with better build quality. I have the MK2, but recently I have been wishing for something sturdier, even though I'm quite careful with the lens, it does creak n rattle here n there, n seems a teeny bit fragile.

I wanna move up to a f1.4

A follow on from the 'lonely heart' red leaf image above, I have just been out in the garden and got these two images of leaves in the pond.....

Taken on a Nifty Fifty Mk1:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3242/2964699632_d167bd6202_o.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3064/2964700262_5a9898860e_o.jpg

The sycamore leaf looked really colourful until I spotted the bright red vine leaf on the other side!! It kinda steals the show a bit....

Straight off the camera with only a slight tweak in the contrast....

Anyway this is my cat, it's a shame I chopped his ears off but hey ho. I really like this lens :)

Sorry not worked out how to add EXIF data yet, i'll have a read, taken with a 350D at f1.8, 1/125sec, iso 400, only pp was to add a border and remove some fluff from his head.

I added the use of an ND 4 filter to achieve this 3.2 sec., F11 exposure. If I want a good shot, the 50mm is what I rely on. What do you think?

Could be that your screen is not calibrated. But from looking at them and then checking out their histogram it tells me that they are.
Here is a before and after of more balanced distribution of how it should look. Your before shot is on the top.

I like the shot there Brig, it seems to me that there is almost just the slightest hint of some kind of blur in the rocks, but it may just be that it pops out so much. I don't mean blur as in wow you screwed that up, but blur in as it almost has a dreamy effect to it. Nice photo, dang now I'm going to have to go out and find some ND filters...

Of course, if I felt that the picture suited being bright and rich in colour. I'd emphasise that.

Hi Tim, thanks so much for the kind comments. I was trying to figure out what area in the rocks looked "dreamy" with a soft-focus and I think it's the part to the left. It does seem to glow a bit now that I look at it with a more critical eye. The reason could be because that area is wet and there could have been ever so slight movement in the water as it slowly moved downwards off the rocks. This could have been picked up and gave it that very slight soft look. Good observation, Tim! I hope you get some of these filters too... it's so much fun. You should have seen me when I took this pic (first time doing a waterfall with ND filter).... I examined the photo after I took it in the LCD and the waterfall surrounded by all the dark rocks just glowed and I gave a quick thumb's up to my hubby! Now that's "satisfaction"..............unfortunately for me (as I'm sure it is this way with most photographers), that feeling is all too rare!

Thanks again and please do post your results when you do try it.

Sort of, as in yes she didn't know I was taking it.
However Amy(the one in the photo) and I went out for a walk and i brought my camera along.
She doesn't like to be in front of the lens, but she certainly doesn't run away from it so i dropped back behind her a few feet like i was taking a photo of something else. ;)

Hi guys, just after some tips - at what aperture is the 50mm sharpest at - around f/2.8? or lower.

stetsonaw

depends on how close you are and how much you want in focus... those band pics above were all at 1.8, which i think is incredibly sharp and fast.

Beyond 2.2, 2.5 - it's not bad. Even wide open it's not bad, but 2.8 it's great. :)

Some one once told me that a lense is like your eye. When your out in the sun and have no sunglasses you put your hand on your forehead as a vior to be able to see things better. There is no exception for your lense its always better. Mind you i dont have one YET. I would say go for it

(I'm not sure what it will look like on your monitors, my dell monitor shows shadows much darker when looking at it straight on, but shows allot more detail in shadows at 45 degree viewing angles - a nightmare for photo editing as i am never sure which of the two angles other people see!)

I'm pretty much calibrated to zero & I don't see any obvious shadow "detail" but that's probably because it's a wall. Looks like the pure black starts about a pinky finger nail length from the edge (holding my pinky up to the monitor, obviously). What you see when you look straight on should be what everyone else see's, ignore what it looks like at different angles. And just to be clear, there should be some pure black in an image like this, there is no reason to have shadow detail if thats what you were trying to do (wasn't sure whether you wanted detail or not by the way you said it).
Cool shot, especially for the 1st time using lights.

Thank you very much! Been waiting for my strobist gear for ages and im so glad it came out well - the nifty is such a great lens, esecially considering its price - i just wish i had a full frame body as i find the 1.6 crop factor of my 450D makes it a little too long for many situations

I was after the dark black shadows - from straight on, i see dark shadows across the right hand side of his face and the right hand 1/4 of the photo is almost pure black, so that you cannot really see the defining line between his shoulder and background. When i look at 45 degrees i can clearly see the line of his shoulder, moles on the dark side of his face and the shadow is more of a grey than a black. I highlight what i mean below

Hi Popoho,
Nice photo however you've focused on the nose (which actually kind of works in this shot) I think when taking photo's of your pets the general advice is to focus on the eyes it usually makes for a better portrait. (I'm far from being an expert so feel free to correct me)

eyes? where? :D
I think the nose was an acceptable decision here seeing as they didn't have much choice but ya, definitely, your "supposed" to focus on the eye & if you can only have one in focus, it's "supposed" to be the eye closest to the camera but you know what they say about rules sometimes...

Thank you both for the comments. I was having a difficult time with my pup, a Maltese, to sit still so I have to use AF Servo to capture multiple shots. This particular shot came out to be the clearest, out of 8 shots. But I will try to focus on the eyes more next time.

I was having a difficult time with my pup, a Maltese, to sit still so I have to use AF Servo to capture multiple shots.

Maltese are hard to shoot. Too much energy, they never sit still. Our two are always moving!!!

Great shot!!

Not wanting to double post, here are some shots I took on Sunday morning with my Mk1 Nifty Fifty: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=611472

It was a nice frosty morning and my toes & fingers were freezing by the time I got home, but a very pleasing walk all the same.....

Any comments and feedback appreciated....
