If you see his eye, he has an ulcer on it, it's perforated 2 layers and he could potentially lose it. That's to avoid him making it worse... because pugs are idiots.

First impressions. AF in good light is quite adequate. About 3/9 shots are OOF. Could be due to be user error however. :p
The AF speed using the center point on a 5d is quick enough. The outer points however....they hunt quite considerably even in good light. Then again, the outer points of a 5d are considered 'weak' by some. So the lackluster performance could be attributed to the body itself as well.
Overall, a bargain for $85.

Ha ha, no problem here. It is the little things sometimes. I tried it in both positions and half way. pushing hard on it, with other bodies. everything I could think of. I got it to focus.... well ,I got it to search a few times. But that was when it was pointed off into "nothingness". But when pointed at a subject it did nothing. didnt ever even try.

Did you figure out your problem, or did you need to send it back?

Thank you! I'd been shooting on a tripod with my 17-50 Tammy at the time, and just as I was packing everything away I quickly put on the 50mm and crouched (hand held) and fired off a few. It wasn't until I got home that I realised that I caught some really cools shots!

Because it is not the origional!! Therefore it has to be a..... :D
I sent it back. If I feel I cant trust it, I will never pull it out of the bag. Then it would be wasted money. I have to know it will work EVERY time it gets put on the camera. So it wend back
I tried everything I could think of, including polishing the contacts. No luck. I should have another one by Wednesday. But I really cant complain. In 20 years of shooting, this is the first piece of equipment that has failed me.

The depth of field is tiny at f/1.8. I found it's a bit easier to use from f/2.2 onwards. It's plenty sharp at f/2.5.
My main advice to you really is don't drop it as it will probably break. But it's a fun little lens.

+1 on the DOF
Also, try not to drop ANY of your gear - but if you DO drop something, may as well drop something cheap like the 50/1.8!! :)

I'm still a photography noob, but from what I've seen, this lens is getting way better results than the kit lens. The sorta results I was hoping to get when I bought the camera.

Cats have varying personalities, and some can be jerks. But at the end of the day, you still love them.
Of course, that changes the next morning, when he's punching you in the face so you will wake up and feed him.

I think that perhaps that shot might've been better with a lower aperture, the starbursts off the lights are a little excessive.
However, I love the texture on the water... great shot.

Are the starbursts created with a filter, or will those happen on their own with long exposures? Are they done in PP?
Love the image, BTW..
Thanks,
John

Smaller (higher numerically) apertures will create that effect.
Think of it like this: look at a light source at night and squint. Notice how you get a starburst pattern? The same thing happens when you increase your aperture value.
You can create starbursts with a filter, however, a higher aperture value will do this as well.

Haha, my other cat is the sweetest thing you'll ever meet, the exact opposite of Henri. But yes, it seems like they're the only animals that can act like total d-bags and still get no repercussions for it.

roszell
20th of January 2009 (Tue), 14:44
-Tweak white balance, exposure, brightness, contrast etc. in Adobe Camera Raw (set sharpeness to zero as I will do that later)
-I usually see how Auto Levels / Contrast look in Photoshop, keeping the changes if they look better
-Resize
-Unsharpen Mask
Sometimes I will try other things but I am still learning really. Also used bounce flash straight off the ceiling with all of these.

Are you using CS3+?
Try using Smart Sharpen after you resize. I find it to be even better than USM.

Would someone be able to post pics of full body shots taken with the nifty-fifty?
I read that Scott Schuman uses a 50mm for his Sartorialist blog, but i cant seem to get good full body shots. btw im using a rebel xsi, would that make a difference?
Thanks in advance.

well, it will make your lens behave like an 80mm one, so you will have to back up alot more (than a ff user) to fit the whole person in the frame

It's challenging with a FOVCF body, but I love it. I just wish the lenses closer to a true 50mm on a crop, like the 35mm f/1.4 were cheaper.
Come to think of it!
...will work for lenses. :)

there's the sigma 30mm f/1.4 - gives the canon 35L a run for its money on a crop and is loads cheaper. i just picked one up & now use it about 10x as much as my nifty, because of the wider aperture and wider fov
