Hi guys! I've been kinda tempted to try this lens after seeing it's price and all the great shots you've taken with it. My question, though is: Do I really need it? I've got an XSi with the 18-55mm and 55-250mm IS kit lenses, do you think it would be an useful addition or should I save my money for something else?
DreDaze
26th of January 2009 (Mon), 00:24
yes it would be useful..opens up a whole new area to explore...no clue on if you should save for something else..what do you like, but can't do with what you have?

if you want lower light ability and shallower DOF, then try it out
if that stuff doesnt interest you, then you dont need it

I think that acquiring this lens will help make someone a better photographer, because it forces you to move your feet more, rather than zooming in/out with the lens. Plus, it's so cheap [compared to other lenses], there's no reason not to buy it.
I've been trying to force myself to use this lens more often to stimulate my creativity.

I'd like to contribute.. My Nifty Fifty cost me a bottle of 12 year old scotch off a friend when he went over to Nikon a few years back.. I have hardly used it but I've been re-aquainting myself with it lately..
OK,, a test shot at F1/8.. Yes,,another bleedin' cat.. The only thing that will sit still long enough in my household..

Did the black and white conversion in Lightroom, and then used some of my custom brush adjustments.
I then exported into photoshop and applied a texture, and then painted it away from the face.
sharpening was highpass filter at 1.0px

I think that acquiring this lens will help make someone a better photographer, because it forces you to move your feet more, rather than zooming in/out with the lens.
I have exactly the opposite opinion. Having to move position to obtain a suitable subject image size just to accommodate a particular lens means you give up all control over perspective, and that could easily translate into the habit of routinely ignoring perspective considerations when composing a shot, concentrating only on the subject.
In my philosophy of photography, the first thing to do is to choose position, and then choose the necessary focal length for the required framing. For some this may mean choosing from an array of primes, but for the beginner, a "standard zoom" provides this at much lower cost.
The 50/1.8 is a great introduction to wide aperture lenses, certainly, but that it's being a prime forces compositional compromise is detrimental to the establishment of good photographic skills.
In my opinion, that is.

Well, here we go, first post!
Hi everyone. Only recently purchased my first canon (1000D) and decided to purchase the nifty fifty after perusing this thread. Here's my first attempt at a portrait...
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3509/3232525366_9d3e5e2fbd_b.jpg
Taken indoors at night with angle poise lamp lighting and tripod. I shot the image in RAW then played around a bit with the image with the canon software before converting to JPEG. Not sure if it's too dark and moody.
Comment/critisisms appreciated.

Got tired of seeing all the cats ;-)
Some shots I took today with my nifty. Not sure if my version is actually called the nifty since I have the Mark I, not the Mark II that everyone raves about here. I bought this with my old file Rebel about 20 years ago ;-)
Kept finding myself using 1.8 just because I could. These may have come out better at 2.0, but I do like the narrow DOF. That's something I never got or actually tried to get with my S1-IS bridge camera. I'm so glad I pulled the trigger on the XS last month.
You looking at me?

^ Could be the lighting - Looks like a rainy/dark day.
It seems relatively good. Maybe try upping the "Sharpness" on your camera's Photo Style - Depending on what body, I find most Canon's to be pretty soft unless you up the sharpness in Styles or in Post. Might just be me.

Yeah it's a bit snowy here. How do i up the sharpness in the camera? never heard of that before, i got it second hand so i suppose it's set up how the last person had it, or default. It's a 20D by the way

Errr.. *Fumbles to find camera*
I'm not sure on a 20D, but I'd say it's pretty universal for the EOS series.
On your camera click, Menu > Flip through until you find "Picture Style" > Click "Disp" to change whatever style you want to change(You can change settings for any of them - Standard/Portrait/Landscape/Etc).
Then simply goto the "Sharpness" bar, click OK, then move it up - Obviously don't OVER do it, as some 'soft'-ness is what you want, otherwise you'll get hot spots, more grain, and of course in portraiture you want SOME softness, as no one likes leather-looking skin lol.
I hope that helps.

Anybody try using the Nifty with extension tubes or a TC?
If so, what suggestions can you make?
I made a DIY extension tube and used the N-F on it.

So far I have been disapointed with my 50. I am not goint to send it back as it is only $80. And If i play with the microadjust I can get it to nail the focus. But when I turn to a subject at a different distence I have to re-microadjust all over again.

Same experience. If I need to nail focus at larger apertures, I use manual focus with magnified live view, or if I have the time, contrast autofocus.

I've actually found the same. At times, it will only hot maybe half of the pics at the right focus... Still definitely worth the $80 IMO. The pictures that do focus, or the ones that you manually focus, come out really nicely...

I wanted to name him Murderface... but eventually, I decided on 'Shmonster'. It's befitting. So much that I may actually murder him before the night is up... lol He's a wild, little kitten. But he has a Hemi for a purring motor and can be really sweet. Loves to cuddle under blankets, sleeps with Erin and I all night. But he's going to be 9-weeks old next Thursday. He's young. His coloring is so funny, I should have named him Tai Lung. He has Leopard spots on his belly. He totally chose me. I picked him up, he jumped on my shoulder and that was it. His brother and sister weren't nearly as sweet.

I've been told that this lens could help me out in a 'low light' situation.
The church I attend is not that greatly illuminated, so i was wondering if anyone could show or take some pictures in a room/place with low light situation.. preferably before photoshopping images... :)
I am considering buying this... i just need the final kick to be sure.
Thanks!

It does help in low light due to its aperture but at the same time it sometimes tends to miss focus too in low light and wide aperture.

This is from when I first got the lens - wasn't paying as much attention as I should have to shutter speed, etc - the ISO should have been bumped for a faster shutter and they could have turned out much better... anywho, in terms of learning the relationship of aperture, shutterspeed, DoF, etc, I think that this lens is a great value.

One thing to remember with the nifty fifty is just because it goes to 1.8 doesn't mean you need to use it at 1.8.
This was my first lens, and all I understood was 1.8 allows more light so great for low light situations, but I found that the small area of focus was not practical in all my photos, so I started upping the ISO and using 2.8 or F3 and soon I had a bigger area in focus-mainly cats at the shelter where I volunteer, the pictures improved a great deal. 6 months later I bought a 430ex11 flash and now I can produce some very sharp images still with a nice Bokeh'd background. There was a time when I first got my lens that I thought I had a bad copy-now I realize I just wasn't using it to its full potential.
I still have lots to learn, and its fun learning while doing, I love seeing how my photographs have improved over the year that I had my camera.
Some people don't like this lens-but I say for $80 its great! the build quality may not be as good as some, the lens is not as fast as some, but I still love my nifty, and recommend it to all people wanting to learn :)
My only complaint at the moment with it is sometimes on a crop body I find 50mm is not wide enough and I have to take alot of steps backwards :)

Pros:
1) the price - it's cheap!
2) image quality is good
3) it's fast... lets in more light than any zoom lens
now the bad points:
1) focusing is slow and noisy
2) very cheaply made... drop it and it will break
3) it doesn't zoom
What do you guys think ? I mean i've seen those pictures, were they hand held or on a tripod?

How many L quality lenses can you drop and not worry about them breaking? I understand your point but with such a small lens you're not going to handle the camera by the lens like a big zoom lens.

mine isnt too loud, and I actually like that it doesn t zoom, I use it on occasions when I dont need a zoom :) if you have a kit lens with your xsi you would prbably benifit from it, depending on what you take pictures of.

I'm shopping for a tripod now, so none of mine had the benefit of one.
To address the cons - 1) live with it 2) if you break it, so what? When it comes down to it, it's $90 for an invaluable lesson in photography 3) that's what feet are for.
Buy this or, if you want something that will last a little longer, the Canon 50 f/1.4 or Sigma 30 f/1.4.

I don't have a problem with the focus. I mean if you are using it to shoot a wedding and need a reliable FAST focus or the moment is lost, get something faster, but for 99% of other shots the focus speed is fine. The only reason why I would spend more on the 1.4 is to get (marginally) better bokeh.
This was taken @ f1.8
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_pI858HPu_js/SWpS9Xh0XDI/AAAAAAAAC9U/FulTIHSPskg/s800/IMG_1884_web.JPG
The other thing you have to ask yourself is, what are you going to be taking pictures of? F1.8 in a church will allow decent shutter speeds in low light, but if you are taking a picture of a few people where you need a decent DOF, it's not gonna really do much there.

This lens is useless. You are probably looking at this thread because you are thinking about buying it, but don't unless you really can't afford anything else.
EVERYTHING about this lens is bad with one exception - sharpness. Actually this lens is extremely sharp, everyone knows it's sharp stopped down but I think it's actually underrated for wide open due to sample variation, AF error or user error, not sure.
Here is something I posted in another thread demonstrating sharpness on a 10 Megapixel APS-C Sensor, so if yours isn't this sharp something is wrong :(
