I have found the 50D has given this lens a new lease of life. I would often pick it up then put it back down when I had the 350D - so many times it would hunt or mis-focus. Now I happily throw it on for portraits or low light.

The closer you are to your subject/focal point, the less DOF you will have, and vice versa.
He was standing a good distance away from the 2nd pillar, which he used as his focal point, thus everything in the background is relatively distinguishable.
Something to note. ;)

Do you have something so you can "screw" the nitfy onto your camera eos-mount? Here in Germany, there is a guy, selling these mounts...very usefull, cause you don´t need to hold or tie your lense to your body

An easy and not too expensive way to turn this lens into a decent macro lens is to buy some extension tubes. I got some kenko tubes for roughly the cost of the nifty and they're very good indeed.

this also happens with every lense-change :P
My 40D also got an integrated cleaning system.
And sooner or later you will find on your sensor, no matter how careful you are on lensechanges etc....

Or if you are really strapped for cash you can do as I have done. I take my kit lens put a UV filter on it, flip my fifty around and secure it to the kit lens with some electric tape. I believe there are some shots in my smugmug gallery with that setup.

I had that problem also, I believe adjusting the focal length helped. What ever couldn't be fixed was cropped is PP.

Very nice David - that shot has a ton of nice color, shallow DOF and what I would say are some very decent bokeh characteristics......especially those 9 circular light patterns in the upper left of the photo. People always complain due to the number of aperture blades on this lens that items like that are more often rendered as pentagons rather than circles. Certainly not the case here.

Good point - at 1.8 there would not be any shape from aperture blades! At f/4 we would have the Secretary of Defense's crib!

Retro photography is just as old as photography itself. It's been around forever. You will need the correct adapter to that lens you want to use to get the best results. Almost every focal length is useful up to 135mm. You want to lock up your mirror and everything you do is 100% manual. You should not have black borders. Slight vignetting is normal though if your lens diameter is as small as on the nifty 50.
Dust is not really an issue, because you normally point your camera down towards your object. Using a blower should be your monthly maintenance for glass and camera anyway.
