Mine never seems as sharp!!
Here's an example,
I want to 'Amore' this lens!!

Nothing but auto levels done to this
And here's the 100% crop of the focus point

Seems pretty sharp, just doesn't look like half of the shots on here!!
Perhaps it's just me!

Shot at f/1.8 which is probably not the sharpest aperture on this lens. I think that you may be surprised to see how much better your shots may look when even just stopped down to f/2 or f/2.2. Plus - your DOF is razor thin at these huge apertures....so any movement at all forward or back on your part however slight can throw what you thought was the focus point slightly out of focus.
sancho1983
4th of March 2009 (Wed), 14:54
Yeah i understand that, that's why i tried this one with a tripod and remote shutter release ;) Definitely don't think it's the movement
I'm in two minds, just accept that I will never use 1.8 and never go below 2.2/3.5, but then i think i shouldn't settle for something that's not working as it should!!
It's definitely not my eyes then!

It's a tiny, tiny aperture. And on top of that, an $90 lens.
Either spend more on a 50mm L or buy CS3 and do some sharpening. Sharpening isn't hard.

I read that MF is better since it has horrible AF, but for me AF seems to work better because the focus ring is tough to control

Lenses aren't at their best wide open even Canon L series lenses.. Stop down a stop or two things start to happen..
The shots taken with the Nifty Fifty are pretty good for F/1.8.. The subject you shot is also curved so don't expect everything to be in focus especially at F/1.8..
No it's not your eyes,,it's your method of testing..

i wouldn't believe everything you read...my AF is fine...also doesn't the AF also depend on the camera body/light, and other factors?
certainly way better than trying to MF thru the viewfinder without a focus screen...maybe not better than 10X mag live view...but that takes to long

Bokeh refers to the quality of the background blur which is totally subjective..Buying a lens just because it has nice Bokeh is counter-productive..

It's kinda hard to ignore that it's a down-sized, under-exposed shot of a plush toy with a razor thin DoF - get out of the kitchen and shoot outside! :D All that being said, you can see where to focus plane is, and it's at least resolving the knit lines in the fabric (left side of Wall-E, eye and hand). I'm sure that you don't have anything to worry about - go shoot, have fun, get the f/1.8 out of your system; learn your working distances and when you need to stop down for appropriate depth - f/1.8 is fun, but not always right. More important, keep an eve on your exposure histogram when shooting.

The diopter adjustment would not have any bearing on shots using auto focus, but it could on manual focus shots when you are judging the sharpness yourself.
As has been mentioned - bokeh refers to the quality of the out of focus elements in a shot.....not the elements themselves. The 50mm f/1.8 is not known for the best bokeh - especially when stopped down a bit, due to the fact that it only has 5 aperture blades and it renders out of focus points of light in a more of a pentagon shape at times as opposed to the much preferred round shapes. I personally think that the 1.8 does pretty well bokeh-wise, but you can get some really dreamy bokeh when you move up the food chain so to speak in quality of lenses.

I really like those shots colourblindphotographer.......
To the group - you can see in that first shot of the train the pentagon shaped points of light at the top of the frame. That is what people will point out from a bokeh related standpoint with this lens, due primarily to the small number of aperture blades (5)....a 50mm f/1.2 would render these same points of light as nice perfect circles.....for a price....

If that spot happens to present an area of high contrast within the camera's AF sensor then it will focus on the small spot.
In the case of the cat picture, it would have been easy for the camera to decide on the cage as it is a very good contrast to the background, which is the cat in this case.

Depends on what you are shooting specifically.
I almost always shoot AI Servo but when I'm using my flash I use One Shot so I can use the focus assist on my 580EXii.

My subjects are almost always moving. My kids and 800 horsepower race trucks.
Also if you can't hold really still, AI Servo will help to adjust any movements you make. IMO

So then you rotate through the focus points as opposed to allowing the camera choose where the "red" square falls on? is that what you mean?

So then you rotate through the focus points as opposed to allowing the camera choose where the "red" square falls on? is that what you mean?
yeah i try and do that...sometimes i'm lazy, and just use center and recompose...but not with this lens, as i feel like it may cause for missed focus due to the small DOF...the only time i use all focus points is when i'm shooting a bird in the sky...and even then i still use center only 75% of the time
using all focus points allows the camera to choose what to focus on, and i'd say it's not always going to focus on what you want...so choosing the focus point is a better way to make sure you get what you want in focus

^ That would be a major pain to constantly have to change.
I usually select the single, middle point for AF focusing - And if I want to compose something to either side of the photo, I just half-press the shutter, wait for AF, then recompose the shot, and shoot.

A couple with the fifty! Just got it...still learning! One of the hardest lessons to learn is to keep from automatically shooting at the largest aperture 1.8 in Av mode because you tend to overexpose your photos! Makes sense now...

it's really not that bad...i'm glad i've gotten to the point where i can do it while still just looking in the viewfinder
i only do it when i know the DOF is going to be small...this way i'll know it's in focus...i only started doing it after reading these links, and seeing others on here mention it...i feel that it does make sense

On the 40D you press the focus point button and then you have two choices:
1. Use the dial, which is awkward to me, because I have to take the finger of the trigger.
2. Use the joystick with your thumb. Works for me.
