Meeeeee.. A copy of the ES-62..

Is the ES-62 the "official" lens hood of the 50mm f/1.8?

What exactly does the lens hood do? I know it has to do with protecting against unwanted light entering the lens but I don't know more than that.

It will also protect the front of your lens from general damage, finger prints, etc.

i had thought i heard that because of how recessed the lens is a hood isn't really necessary, as far as blocking unwanted light...it might serve for some protection...but based on the build of this thing who knows how much help that'd be

A lens hood on a 70-200 or 24-70 for impact protection makes sense. Not so much on a 50mm f/1.8. Then lens is so small your camera body would hit first.

Saw this nice cat on my walk on the beach one night last week. I was out with my camera, and i came around a corner of a pier and it came walking out meowing at me. I stopped and looked at him and he looked up at me when i raised my camera. All he wanted was some attention, and i stopped and played with him for about 10 minutes and went on my way. I'm not sure what's wrong with his eye, but it seems like he might be blind in that eye. =/ Poor fella.

Whoops . Guess I should have been clearer in what I was saying... I meant to say that I'd get a hood for my 50 and my 70-300 from that site, not that I'd get that specific hood from both... lol.. Guess I can't expect people to know what I'm thinking right??? Thanks though I appreciate you pointing it out, since it sure seems like I was going to order the wrong hood!!!

It does seem to be a really good deal, B&H have Canon's hood for $44.50 and this generic is $13.53.

I'm using a generic/copy hood on my nifty - works well as I could expect, I can't compare it to an original as I have not seen one or held one - but i'm guessing there's no difference (except for price). The thread is a lil funny though, gotta be careful you don't screw it in too hard as it can become stuck.

Has anyone fallen out of love with their nifty? After picking up a 17-40L and a 24-105L I feel that the(my copy anyways) nifty is not very sharp and doesnt render colors all so well... Granted it is about 1/6th to a 1/10 cheaper then the two L's but I just seem to think that my only real attraction to it was it being 1.8, and since I dont really have a need for that dof, its really rather useless.

I've hardly used it in the last 12 months, mainly because I now have a 17-55 as my main walkaround-type lens.

However... I was looking back at the photos I took when I used it and I think I'm starting to fall in love with it again. The small DOF you get at f/2.2 or so can produce some beautiful images. Also, I lent it to my housemate a few weeks ago for a Model Mayhem shoot and she took some lovely images with it.

I think I'm going to dig it out and give it another try.

I went through the same phase when I got my 17-40, too - didn't touch the nifty for months... then, because I felt guilty for leaning too heavily on one lens, I decided to slap the fifty back on the camera for a day... and, of course, I popped out a few 'keepers' during a short walk around the neighborhood and came to grips with the fact that isolation is a different type of flexibility than zoom.

Step this little beauty down slightly and it becomes to sharp you could shave your legs with it :)

Both of these were taken with a 350d (Rebel XT) at f/3.5 and ISO 100.

These are the full 8MP images so you can see how sharp the lens is at 100%

Even at 2.8, I feel like it lacks sharpness and doesnt render color all that well. Granted its sharper then any other budget lens, just not quite L sharp is all I guess.

sagray
27th of March 2009 (Fri), 11:36
I find that it's plenty sharp for my needs, and its diminutive size helps me be a little more stealthy when taking candid shots without a flash. I use it occasionally, and I don't see it getting tossed out of the toolbox anytime soon.

WOW! I haven't seen a dragonfly (?) in years!

Thanks! Yes indeed, it's a Dragonfly.

I see them from time to time in Australia, but they're always in unreachable areas (Flying over creeks, etc) -- I just moved house though, and there's hundreds of them buzzing about!

I wish I had a Macro, but the 50mm doesn't do too bad - I just Manual focus everything and it seems to work a bit better than AF.

Wow... incredible detail in those shots... and to think that they were taken with "only" a Nifty Fifty and Rebel XT. I suppose I should have no excuses for not being able to duplicate work like that with my XTi and Nifty.

Thanks for the examples and inspiration!

Step this little beauty down slightly and it becomes to sharp you could shave your legs with it :)

Both of these were taken with a 350d (Rebel XT) at f/3.5 and ISO 100.

These are the full 8MP images so you can see how sharp the lens is at 100%

You guys need to come to Florida.
Here they are all over the place and yet not easy to shoot, let alone with the fifty. This has never occurred to me to try. I usually use my 70-200 or my 100-300 for that...

I thought I'd include this just as a FYI post. This photo was taken with my Canon 40D with the 50mm f1.8 mounted on a Kenko Teleplus MC7 DG 2x extender, effectively turning the lens into a 100mm f1.8. Of course, while it retains the widest aperture of f1.8, it does lose a couple of stops-worth of light, and I had to use MF as the extender doesn't AF with any of my lenses.

Also, the camera seems to meter a little too over-exposed sometimes so I just dial a stop or 2 lower. But the results are, in my opinion, worth the effort as it effectively gives me two primes for the price of one, albeit with a small loss of quality.

The beep tells you that you are in focus, but it only does it in one shot mode.

If you have the beep "ON" then it needs to beep before it focuses.
You may have your diopter out of focus, try twiddling that when you get it in focus.

Most lenses are at their sharpest stopped down around 2 to 3 stops from maximum aperture.. The Nifty is probably similar..

Although the nifty might be sharper stopped down a bit my copy is perfectly sharp wide open. Also, when you stop down you start to introduce the octagon shape to your bokeh highlights, which makes it look like crap. I find I'm either shooting at 1.8 or 5.6 or higher, rarely in between. The bokeh just looks too bad otherwise

Thanks, a fun place for the weekend, love the beach. The wave was rather scary though, the wave came like a tsunami during early morning (4am), it hit the shore so loud that everyone was waken up by the noise.
