There's no doubt that the 50mm f/1.8 has the cheap plastic build everyone speaks about. If you are on a budget or don't exactly know your lens needs yet and want a great little lens that is fast and works very nicely for portraits then grab one of these.
If you already know you want more or just won't be able to deal with the cheaper build then by all means save or just spend the money on the 1.4. I don't own one but it is suipposed to be outstanding with a much better build. The 1.8 affords many people like myself the opportunity to have an inexpensive lens that performs quite well under many different conditions.
For all the things this lens is not, what it IS actually outweighs what it is not.

Quick question:
Does the 50mm 1.8 MK 1 have the same focusing issues as the MK 2? If you don't care about having the wider aperture of the 50 1.4, is the 50 1.8 a better choice?

TMR Design
6th of November 2006 (Mon), 11:17
My understading is that the older Mk I was a bit better with a better build but I don't know firsthand. Honestly I did not weigh things out as a lot of people do. My attitude was just that I am still exploring focal lengths and $70 got me a pretty darn good lens to get going with a 50mm prime. I don't regret my purchase at all and if I find that I need or want something like a 50mm f/1.4 then I will have already gotten my monies worth from this lens.
I still think that unless you have immediate plans to upgrade or just have the cash to spend then you simply can't go wrong for $70 especially if it's your first or only prime.

i picked up a 50mm 1.8 because of this thread, and a few other recommendations. the following day a friend had his snowmobile at work, on the truck flat deck, taken apart to have an electric starter installed. no body panels left some interesting things to photograph. the first is the engine and clutch, the second is the track undercarriage. used 420EX flash pretty much head on, which left the engine case kind of blown out.

Haha, Bass Pro is awesome. And I'm not a hunter or fisherman (anymore.) I'm a city boy in ever sense of the word, but Bass Pro is still just an appealing place. I was excited when we got the store a couple years ago. Walk outside of that store and there's a Joe's Crab Shack, another favorite chain of mine. :)

Anyway, Bass Pro ends up in lots of my photos because it's in my favorite part of the downtown area.

all these shots look great...

would I get better results in getting this lens vs say a 35-70 lens which covers it?

More to a lens than mm range. Read the stickies in the Lens forum.

What factors into a lens...

MM Range, F#, Quality/Build, Bokeh, Sharpness, and Color Rendition.

First of all I don't think Canon makes a 35-70, I know that Nikon does. But the point about a lens covering the range, no. Any zoom will cost more than the 50mm 1.8, in fact any lens will be more than it. The 50mm 1.8 is a very special lens in the price catagory. It's one of those "must have" lens because it's so cheap and it's a very good lens too. I've heard the 50mm 1.4 lens is better but there is a big cost difference. After all, you can buy the 50mm 1.8 for $70.00 to $80.00 and the 1.4 version goes for around $300.00.

I know I really love my 50!

After hearing so many good things about this lens I decided to try one myself. I am still quite new at all this; but since getting the lens the other day I have been taking pictures like crazy.

Here is one of my favorites from the ones I have shot thus far:

Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT
ISO: 200
Exposure: 1/13 sec
Aperture: f/2.0
