Just bought a used Hoya Skylight 1B filter for my 50.
Took a random pic to test with F/2.8.
Was amazed how sharp it was even for a quick test.

Putting my newbieness aside, if one has a crop sensor, is the Nifty Fifty better off being a Nifty Thirty Five instead (as this is around 56mm on a 1.6x sensor). Or does it even matter?
I realize that the lens will work with either camera, I'm just wondering about it's general FOV aspect between a FF and a crop sensor.

it doesn't really matter...i think sometimes people focus too much on crop factor...unless you're coming from a film background i really wouldn't worry about it...if you are coming from that background then you know what focal lengths worked for you, and you can just divide by 1.6 to get what you want
in order to determine what lens you should get i'd set your current lens to the differing focal lengths you're choosing between, and see which one works best
Angdvl089
5th of May 2009 (Tue), 01:24
I don't think it really matters, though it's all personal preference. If you ask people with full frame their favorite portrait lens is most likely 85mm, the nifty is almost the equivalent FOV on a crop sensor. So again, it's all personal and depends on what your looking to shoot.

Wow, interesting, almost the same exact answer. Good to know. I'll have to see which focal length suits more of my photos, and go with that one. Thanks!

If you're asking about the lighting, that dude that answered above is right, it's pretty much just the stage lighting. I just waited for the guy to stand in the spot where the stage lighting was the brightest, and then I snapped a shot. I had the aperture open all the way to F 1.8, and I was at ISO 3200 (it was really really dim on the stage).

I didn't think they allowed flash ... or just assumed that anyway. Yeah, just natural light. If you get the full blown shot you'd see the noise.

From a beach photo shoot of a hip-hop dance team/teams that I did in San Diego last year, it's pretty cool what you can get with a 50mm f1.8 and a Canon 20D, especially now that you can buy both the body and the lens used for around $325 or so. Sorry if I posted too many....

Hi, thanks so much. I'm not exactly sure but it would've been around f/1.8 - f/2.8 because I just used the automatic settings for "Portrait" on the 20D, I didn't shoot RAW  - cuz we were going so fast, there must've been about 35 dance team members and I had to have a photo shoot with each one solo, and then in groups, all within 2 hours.
Same setup here (2 out of the 4 dance teams from that shoot): nifty-fifty and Canon 20D, :D however the aperture was a lot less wide

The AF on this lens will tent to hunt and not always lock where you want. Its kind of a trade off...great image quality, but poor build quality and leaving you wanting more AF...the thing can't be prefect for $85....lol
I have had shots that I took of cars...full body car shots...where when I dumped the pic to my computer I found that the lens decided to focus on the car behind my subject...lol

I use to use AI servo all the time until I found that one shot focus seems to be more accurate. That could be your problem if you shoot AI servo.

It could just be me, but I would think, that any lens that has such a small DOF, it will have a harder time focusing. What would be interesting, is to see if the lens has the same problem at f/5.6 or 8 or something. Just takes a few inches/feet for something to be out of focus at that wide of an aperture.
I don't have this lens yet, but am thinking of getting one soon, just haven't decided on which one to get, 1.8, 1.4, or 1.2... Need to get a tripod first though.

If you have the money for the 1.4 I would definitely spring for it. I would almost claim that the 50 1.8 has similar glass compared to the 1.4, however the 1.4 has USM, it's faster, better built, and better bokeh. It's just a matter of time before I switch over to it as well.

Yeah but would you even notice the difference between two of the same pictures with the different lenses? .4 won't make much of a difference in bokeh. Although it is a lot better built than the 1.8.

It's not the aperture that makes better bokeh (per se, it does have a lot to do with it), it's the amount of aperture blades. The 50 1.8 has five blades while the 50 1.4 has eight. Take a look at this comparison from the-digital-picture. From left to right you have the 50L, 50 1.4, and 50 1.8:

Yeah but look how close those are. just a regular old image I don't believe its that easy to tell the difference. I don't know, I'd take a 1.4 any day but I guess in comparison of the price and how much money you're actually making off photography makes it a deciding factor in choosing between the 3. I found my 1.8 for 60$ I couldn't ever beat that price.

The 1.8 is an amazing lens for the money. I know that I like the 50mm focal range so I'll be buying the 1.4 soon for the better build, focus ring, and usm.

8 blades, but the aperture is circular shaped.

WOW, got my 50 this morning. Only had chance to take a few shots in work... nothing special but loving the sharpness. After using my walk around lens 17-85mm USM I was shocked to see how small this lens is.. a small stump sticking out from my Xsi body. Well here is the one shot I took.. the first from this 50mm
Thanks for all the comments in this thread as you guys made my mind up about buying this looking at your pics and comments.

I don't know about the OP but I am convinced! As soon as I have the funds I am going to place my order. I was told by a few people that it should help with my flash issues too. I can't believe what a difference a relatively cheap lens can make!

To be honest, when I first got my 30D it was with the 28-135 and nifty fifty but I just bought the newer 18-55 IS and I doubt I'll be taking it off any time soon. 50mm on a crop body isn't very wide and I don't think it would do well replacing the "kit lens".

If you shoot in RAW and make your adjustments in LR, then WB in camera won't matter. You can change it easily in LR. If you shot jpg, however, it would require a few more steps.

I think the comment had more to do with the aperture chosen in, at least, your second shot. Not alot of photos in this thread are stopped down much past f4 to showcase the bokeh this inexpensive lens is capable of. I'm impressed that it is straight out of the camera though... no colour correction at all?

Batch work is the domain of LR2 nowadays, friend. You can do a full batch crop or a full batch export/re-size. But, you know, it costs some dough. If you've got a valid student ID, that shaves $100 off.

If you have Windows XP, I use a PowerToy, called Image Resizer. Can be found here.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx
Works great, select a group of pictures in a file browser window, right-click, and select resize. Then you choose your size, and if you want to replace or copy the files. Great when you don't want to open up your full blown photo editor to do some resizing.

Wacked it on the car getting in with the camera still around my neck (stupid). Pulled the front element out. I tried pushing it back in but once you do something like that it's never the same. Some test shots show the AF is off and there is double imaging the further out towards the sides you go.
I've only had it a few months too :(

warranties typically don't cover dropping or abusing the lens
i've seen other threads where it was dropped, in two pieces...put back together, and performed better...i'd keep messing with it

I don't know how to pull the front portion out again now. I popped it back in but I think I popped it back in 'off' from it's original position. There is a black ring that a metal circlet pops under. I don't know how to get it back out from the ring. I'd need to pull it or pop it again somehow but the plastic focus ring might break along with it if I pull on it.
Saying that though I guess if it's already broke I have nothing to lose by trying.

Oh well if it wasn't broke before it is now lol. I pulled it off but managed to pull away the contact strip between the bottom of the lens and the internal system. I don't have any soldering skills so I give up. I'll just get another as they are relatively cheap.
EDIT: I wish I had seen your link before I went fiddling. Grr! Hehe.

Hi, I just did exactly that last week - wasn't paying attention, Triod leg dropped in a hole and the 50mm hit the ground. The front element popped right out. After half an hour of fiddling I eventually noticed that there are two locating lugs, one's slightly smaller than the other which dictates the orintation of the front element. It miraculously clicked back in, and is working fine. Not the sort of treatment i'd recommend for an expensive lens (:
