This is probably not the lens you'd usually opt for while taking these types of shots but my other lenses were in the trunk. All these shots were taken while driving up I-25 from Albuquerque to Colorado Springs. Nothing too special, I was just really intrigued by the difference in landscape since I'm from the East Coast.

Chocolate fish?

They're not really made of fish, just fish-shaped. They're a type of Japanese pastry with (chocolate) filling. The consistency is kind of like a waffle. Don't worry, they're delicious! :)

How much closer do the Kenko extension tubes allow you to focus with this lens? I'm considering getting the kenko tubes for now since the macro lens I want is out of stock at every reliable online retailer selling it at a reasonable price.

Does anyone have sample shots of this lens being coupled with the kenko tubes? I'm interested in seeing what the results are. Maybe even comparison shots. I tried googling for this lens and the tubes but came up short.

sorry i didn't do all the combinations of the tubes, but it gives you a general idea of the capabilities...also the last one is at a different angle because i needed a tripod to try and get any sort of sharp shot...i did these before i had my 430EX

Thank you. That gives me a pretty good idea of how close I can get with the tubes.

I really want to get the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM. Newegg has it at the lowest price I can find, but they are out of stock like everyone else. If I manage to get my hands on one when they restock, I will just grab one. If I happen to miss that opportunity, then I may just go with the tubes first.

If I did go with the tubes, I could always use them on the macro lens as well to get even closer.

i bought the kenko tubes and honestly i dont want to buy the 100mm any more. i never intended to use it for portraits too, and the tubes with my 50 give me REALLY nice results. even when i get a faster 50 i will keep this one just to use with tubes.

Well I had put up a thread earlier asking for advice and recommendations for a lens to go with the 18 - 55 IS one that came with my camera. I was already considering this one after reading lots of reviews about it but looking through this thread and seeing all the amazing pictures has helped me make my mind up.

I have just purchased myself the nifty fifty and am itching for it to arrive so I can have a go at taking some pictures with it :)

I finally got to play with my new Nifty Fifty and love it. I went down to a local area known as Bricktown, an old factory area that has been turned into all sorts of night clubs and bars and eating establishments. It even has a canal that runs thru it and water taxis to take you around. I am by know means a photographer but I try my best to capture what I think I see so I just wanted to post a few shots that I did. I love this lens by the way.

hello members,

i shall be thankful for any clarification. i see that you guys get tac sharp pics but 9 out of 10 shots that i take are soft at f1.8 to f2.8 with my nifty fifty on my 300D. i have tested and tested on many ocassions and noted that as i have myopia (-eye sight corrected with glasses) i do not put on my glasses when i am using view finder and any shot that takes peering into the viewfinder for more than 5 to 10 sec gets the images blurred. i use the diopter correction on the viewfinder set to "-" and see the images clearly but when i take the pic the end product is always blur with out any sharpness. i am enclosing a shot on tripod so i guess its not the camera shake.
is it my eyesight thats getting in the way or should i send my lens to canon for correction.
any suggestions will be much appreciated.

.5 of a second is quite slow hand held. And when you've already got such a slight depth of field already --- Meaning only a tiny bit of the image, even if taken with a higher shutter speed wont be blurred.. All it takes is a TINY bit of camera shake.

So either

1) Get a tripod when you are shooting at night and only shoot stationary things when your shutter drops below 1/50th

or 2) Get a speedlite so you can shoot at 1/60th and still have adequate lighting.

Try shooting outside during the day with adequate lighting, stick it in P for a bit if you have to and see how the images come out then.

hi karizmatik,

many thanks for the quick reply. much appreciated. i see what you say, and the image that i posted is taken on tripod. i got the lens as i want to open up the apperture and even when i go to f2.8 the problem is still there. some times just by fluke i get some sharp images so i guess the copy is ok and i need to learn properly how to use my tools. a case of bad worksman blaming his tools maybe.
i will surely work on your suggestions and will get back. hope i will get onto my learning curve properly.

At .5 of a second though, the shutter releasing, you pressing the button, a slight bump of the tripod, any of that could cause the image to still have shake.

And dropping back to F2.8 is only going to allow even less light in, making you have to drop the shutter speed even more.

So I'd definitely be buying a speedlite or shooting in areas where there is adequate enough light for you to be shooting.

Try setting your tripod up again, setting it at F1.8 and putting the camera on Timer for 2 seconds, hit the timer to take a picture, step away an be still, and see if the camera still has the shake in that picture... If not, then it was most likely the shutter / pressing the button / accidental bump that caused the shake in the photo you posted here.

Sekhar, another thing to consider is that Canon made an update starting with the 400D/XTi that the center focus point is optimized for apertures 2.8 and larger (f2.0, f1.8, f1.4 etc.) Someone please correct me if I'm wrong with that statement.

In any event, when shooting in the wide open aperatures, it is better to lock focus with the center point and then recompose if necessary. The other focus points might not be as accurate. I'm almost positive that you don't have this benefit with the 300D.

But don't let that discourage you. You can still get great shots with your 300D. This lens is sharper in the f2.8 to f11 range, with f5.6-f11 being the sharpest. Again, someone please correct me if I'm stating incorrect facts.

It's tricky at f1.8, so don't be hard on yourself. You just need to practice more, and bump up your ISO if necessary. A flash will really help as well.
Good Luck! :D

Second is SOOC -- The green lights were stage lights.

Third is SOOC with some slight toning.

Fourth is SOOC with a bit of a film effect and grain.

I have an EOS canon XS will one of these 50mm ef lenses fit my camera?

This lens on the XS is the same (I mean in terms of field of view) like 400D (XTi) and like my 40D.
In fact any lens on all Rebels and EOS x0Ds will be the same. (All got sensors that are 1/1.6 of the size of the full frame sensor)

Only 1Ds and 5D are different (as the sensor is full frame), and the 1D is 1/1.3 of the full frame size.
