It seems everywhere I go and see canon shooters and talk to them, they all ask me if I have a nifty fifty, one guy actually called his 1.8 his "plastic fantastic". Up until now I have had to say no, but I have one coming next day or so hopefully! $132 aussie delivered, it's too cheap NOT to have one I reckon. As that big Austrian bodybuilder once said, "I'll be back" :D

This is exactly why I got one. It really was the only reason.

GH: wow those eyes! ^^^^^^^^
Got my 50 today, and after pretty much permanently having the 100-400 on for the last few weeks, it looks so "dinky" on the 50D
It was pretty bleak this arvo, so I just had a quick play with it experimenting with the shllowness that 1,8 gives. It's all new to me!
First one is at F1.8 second is at F8. I can see how easy it will be to miss focus at 1.8, the DOF is SO shallow!!
I promise the next ones I put up won't be something as boring as a wall, but I wanted to see how sharp it was as well as showing me how shallow it is at 1.8.

The cool thing about that shot, is how amazingly fast it rolls off. It's almost like it's a section of sharp focus, and then you hit a certain distance, and it gets way blurry. I need to get me one of these so bad.

24th of June 2009 (Wed), 12:26
Yeah, exactly, it's not subtle as it goes away, it's either in focus or it's totally not! It did some funky stuff to the mortar gap as it goes off in the distance though. It spread it out wide.
I took a shot of a wall hanging that has an old car that sticks out slightly from the background image, when I checked it on the PC I thought I had an issue with it not focussing on the right hand side of the image, but as I thought about it more, I was actually off centre from what I was shooting.
Here's one I did of my 17-85. I am just back from minimum focus distance.
It has focussed on the IS extruded piece, which is what the focus point was positioned to, but anything behind that, including the canon marking which is only a few mm behind, is already going out.
The speed at which it goes away is something totally new to me, the top of the lens just melts away!
As I mentioned earlier, it could and prob will catch me out more often than not shooting wide open until I get used to it. Shot at 1/30 @f2

It's still pretty overcast outside so I used the flash. The background is shadecloth and it's only a meter or so behind and it's pretty much wiped out.
What a cool little lens!

nifty fifty for sports? Why not!
My better half playing some tennis. ok, so I missed the face, but I got the racquet and ball in focus
Second is my 8 year old "watching" the ball ;)
1st shot is 1/2500 @F2 ISO 100. It shows +.7 exposure comp, but I brought it back down .5 in DPP.
2nd shot is 1/4000th @f2 ISO 200.

I broke my mk ii lens a few weeks back. Been missing it. I got a Sigma 30mm F1.4 to replace it but it's a different style of shooting. Sooooooo...
I saw a mk1 for auction on Ebay (The one with the metal mount), bid and won it for £102 inc postage. It comes without any lens caps (No worries I can use the old caps) but I have been assured it is in good working order and no damage, fungus etc to the lens elements. It will come in a soft pouch with a basic filter on the front.
I so hope it's OK and hoping the better build quality will help.

MelissaM, that's the main reason I bought the nifty fifty, we have a girl due in early November, and am stinging to take some shots of her like the one you posted.
I had some fun today with mine and some coolant and oil. Never done this kind of thing before but anyway here are a couple. It sure is an easy way to get your shutter count up fast!
The color of the coolant is like a punch in the face!

Thanks! Also, how did you find it on flickr? I only ask because I telling people I cant find the EXIF haha. Also, with the MF, I focus back and forth until i hear the beep and then click the shutter and pray it comes out good. sometimes that works, others it doesnt. my advice. just keep shooting and eventually you'll get the hang of it. hell i am still trying to get the hang of it.

The 1st was in color, the 2nd is in B&W and when I shoot B&W I try to use a lot of contrast and simulate film grain because I love it. I change the parameters in the camera, too. :) So other than that, I didn't change much. Just re-positioned a little. :)

When shooting people, I always try to focus on the eye. The lens gets rather sharp around 2.8 so I try to make sure that's where I stay unless I'm far enough away and need a lot of background blur.
Other than that, watch your backgrounds, Lightroom is the ****. Keep shootin'.

Here's a tight crop of a flower I took yesterday. To be honest I haven't used the 17-85 since I bought the nify fifty. Never would have figured that before I bought it.

This lens is pretty freakin' cool on the 5D Classic.
Cool shots, they kinda have a tilt-shift look to them. What kind of PP did you do?

Almost none. Resizing, maybe a touch of USM. I did do a little spot sharpening on the sign lettering, but that's about it.
Those were both shot a f/1.8, so the razor-thin DoF helps give that TS-ish effect, I guess.

dont let the price on this lens fool you...it is one of the best primes Canon has to offer.
Yes the AF is not that fast, and hunts sometimes in dim situations, but with good light, it is fast. IQ is outstanding as well the portability of it.
The lens is so good, that i sometimes use it for candid shots at the weddings i shoot. :)

So true. Sometimes I select it over the other tricks in my bag, because it's so small, light, and almost covert. And it works nicely in low light, candid situations.
Now, an obligatory image posting...

Mine is really sharp at f/3.2 but more open it often struggles with focus and misses totally quite often. Is that normal? Here is a pic at f/3.2.

Well when you are shooting at 1.8 you have to realize you have a very shallow DOF and getting the focus with something like that is touchy no matter what lens you are working with.
As far as this lens I myself, and a few others agree that around 2.5 2.8 it really sings.

yah the sigma is great. Check this link to view some photos from my sigma (some of them i don't have tagged, but most i do).

I use the sigma as my walk around. Although when i get some more money to invest in some L glass i will replace the focal lengths with something else and part with the sigma.

Like your photos much, specially the kids expressions and the catch lights in the girl's eyes.
I think I'd like the lights to move up more to show natural look for the features of the face.
Also, may be a little less green in the B&W tone, may be for more yellow.

Thanks for the feedback. At the moment I only have some 4 foot twin fluoros that I am utilising - have to see if I can move them around a bit (where taken standing up on the ground). The colour of the B&W's were used with just the camera settings.....will have to have a play with the light balance settings to see if it makes a difference to the outcome of the colours (or another suggestion?). Cheers

Don't think it is white balance, but there are some settings for the B&W tones in the camera. I didn't use them before so I am not sure. Or may be just do the conversion yourself on the PC.

I just looked at this whole thread :P. Deciding between this and the Sigmalux (sigma 50mm 1.4). I would love the siggy, but because of money issues I may have to settle on the Nifty Fifty, but these pictures have made me realize that it is not exactly "settling". This lens is great for the price. I think I will get this lens, unless I find an extra $400 in my back pocket =).
I also have a question, why does this lens have pentagon-shaped bokeh in some pictures, but beautiful, rounded bokeh in other pictures? Are the pentagon one taken with a larger aperture, and the rounded ones with smaller ones? That seems to be the only answer.. Nevermind, I think i answered my own question; correct me if I am wrong?

When the lens is all the way open (i.e. f1.8 ) the aperture blades are completely hidden. But when the five aperture blades close down, they form a pentagon. Higher end lenses have 7+ blades with rounded edges to keep a more circular aperture shape.
