Very very very over sharpenned.
yeah, I noticed that too. Could it have been the resize program I used? the larger doesn't look like that.

The bird picture is almost a 100% crop. It was originally in the top right of the frame.
*edit*
NVM. It isn't very close to a 100% crop.

Thank you, kindly
genuinerolla: that shot is magic! Care to share any secrets? The "look" it has is simply amazing!
I do 99% of my editing in LightRoom 2.0. The rest is just in my lighting. AB800 in softbox boomed out over me, camera left. AB800 to camera right and behind for slight rim.
+1 - Looks like its CGI........ very, very good CGI

Here's a few with my nifty fifty.
Taken in Ann Arbor Michigan, at the Ann Arbor Art Fair, on the UofM campus.
First 2 are of my girlfriend, getting some shade under some tree's. Than a Didgeridoo player. Than a building that was on campus.

This is very cute, but I felt like this one needed just a little bit of a boost. I think the car top blocked some of the light on the girl. Hope you don't mind if I do a little editing as if it were my own shot:
Bumped highlights and a little contrast. Added an a duplicate layer in overlay mode with about 20% opacity:

it simply means a newer version of the lens with some improvments,,,, when they improve the old lens they release the same model but with this mark II or 3

Thanks, I usually try to post most of my lighting setups as it helps other individuals and me by remembering how I had it setup so i can replicate it easier next time.
Keeping the flash bare and at f/2.2 and zoomed to 70mm helped with the distance. Shooting at f/2.2 my subject is fully lit at 15-20 feet and she was only, from eyeballing it, 10-15 feet.. I was happy with the light output, but is a bit strong still I think and there is some harsh shadows from her arm. I didn't have my umbrella or softbox with me as I'm just here visiting my parents for a little bit, or else the shadows would be diffused better. I have a few others of her with i might post for today's daily photo as well.

It's got a real retro look to it... but the hair covering the left eye, combined with the blown-out highlights in the hair on the left side of her head are bothering me for some reason. Same with the shadow on the right side of the chin.
I like a lot of your other work, though.

probably o.k....but to be honest you're probably saving less than 10 dollars, and with a reputable company you'll get a 1 year warranty...and with the fifty it's probably worth the extra money

My daughter Lily.. (I was experimenting with the on camera flash believe it or not.. I made this big peice of tinfoil that allowed me to reflect the light around, so I turned the tinfoil and bounced the flash off the floor for this one)

Yep, mid flight.
Of course I took a bag load of duds! Bees are cool, I'm not too worried about getting stung by one, besides, they only sting you once! Wasps however I really hate. I had one tag me on the face three times in about 2 seconds a few years ago. THAT hurt!
I only really did the whole selective colour thing as it brought it out better. The background had some dead flowers mixed in etc so I thought I'd try it.
Of course it is a very heavy crop as I just can't get really close enough to them at the min focus range. I might grab some extension tubes I think.

Thanks UTT. no, I don't have tubes as yet. Just the lens.
I tried some with my 100-400 as well. There is a couple on my flickr page. Problem with that lens was I had to stand 2 meters back so they still ended up tiny.
Here is the original of the one above, straight out of the cam, only DPP WB adjust and sharpen to setting 4, and resize to 800 wide. It was that one dead flower I didn't like. Making it B&W made it less obvious.
F4 ISO 400 1/1250.
Funny thing I noticed with the bees I have shot, some were done at 2500 and still got full wing blur, so they obv. change "flapping" speeds quite a lot. Prob depends on the pollen load

So I badmouthed this lens and sold it 4 months ago and then I just went and ordered one again today after reading about all the nightmares with the 50 1.4 lenses from both canon and Sigma. I figure if I am going to suffer through some quirks for a 50mm, it might as well be cheap.

Increase your shutter and/or ISO. Rule of thumb you shouldn't be shooting anything less than the reciprocal of your focal length ... so 1/50th is as low as you should go.
The lens will be a little soft at wide open and shines at f/2.5-2.8.
You also need to get used to shooting without IS it seems like.

This lens needs high shutter speeds. Use a minimum of 1/100 and you will notice a LOT more sharpness to your images. The standard rule of thumb without IS is 1/focal length (so 1/50), but I find that is not enough for the light little lens. All my crappy soft shots with the nifty are under 1/100. 1/250 is even better.
Also, as with almost all fast lenses, it is a bit softer at f1.8-2.5 or so. Not terrible, just not razor sharp like at F4.
