Pretty cool shots. I remember when I went skydiving, the setup the guy had strapped to his head was crazy.

They are mostly straight from camera.
Top one increased in contrast, blacks, saturation, little sharpening.
Bottom one decreased saturation, pumped up vibrance, increase in blacks and contrast, a little sharpening, and added texture over top.
Both at f/2.0.

You guys are coming off pretty high and mighty here. We all start learning somewhere and are at various stages of experience. Just because he has a $600 L lens doesn't mean he automatically becomes a photo expert. He probably came to this site to learn how to use his gear better and get advice. So how about helping instead of belittling?
Now as for the question, the f number is the aperture ratio. There is quite a bit into what effect this has on your photos, so I suggest you do a bit of reading on the topic. THe basic answer is that the smaller the f number, the more light that gets let in per shutter speed, and the thinner your plane of focus becomes.

None of us are being high and mighty. It's just that buying an L lens and not knowing what aperture is, is like buying a high end sports car and asking what the clutch is. They are both kind of important.
If he inherited it or something that's a completely different story; good for him.

There are many, many replies to posters, who say they are on a limited budget, where the stock reply is you need an 'L' lens. Maybe he saw the 50mm F 1.8 and did like the rest of uis and got it even though it's a piece of s***, Maybe he's an idiot for believing anything he reads on the internet, maybe he actually thought people where being helpful? Everyone learns in different ways. I didn't know how to remove the lens from an SLR body when I bought my 17-55mm IS. It was the only lens I had, why would I want to take it off? Embarrassing moments are watersheds to look back on and see how far you've come.

Apologies for the green flares (dried rain drops on my lens -> slight drizzle that evening).
I'm getting addicted to primes (since they're the only ones I can afford). My next lens is the 85mm 1.8. I bought a Super Takumar 28mm 3.5 (on its way) but it'd probably for my artsy projects. I don't know whether I should go for the 28mm 1.8 or save for the 35 1.4L next.

Took these two weeks ago when I bought this lens. Was trying to see what kind of crazy bokeh I could get with it. Very pleased so far.

Definitely no - at least not the Canon branded one. It is a silly setup with a two part design. Since it screws into the extending lens barrel, it will do almost nothing to save the lens if you drop it. The front element is pretty well recessed, so flare should not be an issue. If it is for your shooting conditions, I would get a $5 screw on rubber hood off ebay instead.

You don't need to buy from a big name dealer to get a good deal on the hood. I have one and it never comes off my 50m. I think it certainly does help.
I just purchased the f/1.4 copy today and won't be in this thread anymore when it arrives ;). So if anyone wants a sharp copy of the 1.8 let me know I'm selling mine now.

I got my Hood through today as I got it cheap from eBay. £5 for the Canon one in the box. So I got it for the reason of being cheap and I feel like it's a good thing to have. Everyones different. :)
Now, is it worth getting the Carry Strap Bag for it too? Any Filters worth getting as well?

I'm doing a wedding/blessing tomorrow. Not done one before. Just a favor for a friend and an experience for me. I was thinking I'd end up doing the whole thing with my 17-55 F/2.8. But do you think the Nifty should be out more for this as well?
Thanks in advance,
Peter.

I did a whole wedding (my first one, non-paid) with the 17-55 on a 40D and it was fantastic. The 50D is good, but in low light it can hunt a little when focussing.
I would suggest the 17-55 would be the one to have on your camera most of the day.
Just my opinion though.

id like to get both! problem is that the fall rebates are coming around soon. i dont want to be hasty and pick up the 85 1.8 and have it be part of the rebate. if i hold off on the nifty fifty, and the 85 happens to have a rebate, i could effectively get it for another ~$90 off:D
