thats true
well maybe all the ef-s lenses then.
When its wide open though the blur has a pentagonal look due to the low quality of the blades, thats the only criticism.

aren't most of the EF-S mounts plastic?

the highlights when shot wide open don't have the pentagon look...that's only when you stop it down...when it's wide open they are circles...

Seriously, there are many reasons why this photo looks blurry, one of these reasons only is that you need the lens fixed. Others are that shooting that near, 1/125 is not enough. Tripod needs to be super sturdy, and you can use mirror lockup and a remote shutter. But for me I can see that the blurring here is shake. I feel blurring is in one direction.

I agree but it is not so easy with this lens because of the unrelliable focus. Sometimes you nail it sometimes not, even if you aim at the same spot all the time. The focusing really sucks on this lens.

Here is our cat: 1.8, 1/160, ISO 200.

I'd agree that it CAN be soft wide open. But there are a lot of variable. Stopping it down to 2.0 or 2.2 will yield better results. Plus you're not getting any less a great image or any less background blur close-up. Far away is even negligible.

carlomontoya
4th of October 2009 (Sun), 03:04
I can't definitely explain the 'softness' at 1.8 but there are times when it's not. I tried reading about focus shift but I still can't understand it. I just know that at wider apertures, slight movements in the camera or by the subject will result in a misfocus.

Here's a shot at 1.8 but it's sharp where it counts (enough for me) from left edge of nose to left edge of left eye

This is exactly why I hate this lens, well one of the two reasons. First, I own a 1.8 to use it at 1.8. I don't like knowing I have to stop it down to get acceptable sharpness. I find I have to go to close to f4 to get real good sharpness. I am OK if a lens is slightly softer wide open then when stopped down, mine is quite a bit softer and is in the 'no longer acceptable' category. The second reason I dislike this lens is the nervous bokeh.

http://www.tawbaware.com/maxlyons/calc.htm

Try the section called "Dimensional Field of View Calculator"

For 50mm on a 1.6x crop and 10ft you'd get a field of view 4.5' by 3'. That's probably about right for a small group portrait (2-3 people). 10ft is pretty far away if you're sitting in the stands of a football stadium! I do not think this would be a very good lens for this purpose.

I've used the new Siggy(which is awesome) and the Canon 1.4. Both were not enough to pull me off this one. To me the BQ is outweighed by the sheer compactness/lightness. The one main issue would be bokeh, but it's not like the 1.8 has bad bokeh (it's better than any zoom), it's just the 1.4 's are better. As far as sharpness, there are a couple tests out there with the 1.8 winning from what I remmeber. I'm looking at picking up the 35 F2 (which I have not used) for the same reasons.

I don't shoot much portrait except for friends and family, mostly using the primes for landscape and backpacking. The 10-20 and 50 1.8 made for an awesome backpack combo.

Sorry, that is not true. The f1.8 can have rough distracting bokeh with hard lines and pentagon highlights unless you are wide open. Many zooms are considerably better as a matter of fact.

you didn't put a price on your statement...and i think my 70-300mm IS(8 circular blades vs. 5 blades) gives a slightly more pleasing bokeh...but then again, i think it's because of the fact that it's a telephoto...and causes the blur behind the subject to be much creamier

The one main issue would be bokeh, but it's not like the 1.8 has bad bokeh (it's better than any zoom), it's just the 1.4 's are better.

well, from the 3 zooms that I have - all of them. I'm using the term "better bokeh" to mean a more pleasing look to the out of focus blur. 50 1.8 is pretty below average when it comes to smooth blur unless you completely blur the BG into nothing. It's got a lot of good points given the cost, but creamy smooth bokeh is not one of them.

I had that lens and the bokeh IMHO is superior on the 50 1.8. In fact I would call the 70-300 IS bokeh weak, like the 100-400. The 300 F4 prime I have is a step up from my 50 1.8 though.

The key like you said is you have to get the separation to get good results.

Have you ever considered the 50 1.4 instead of this? Or just the 50L? Or maybe even the Sigma 50..
Some people seem to be able to get amazing results with this lens, and others not so.

Well, right now I may be looking a the 1.4 but then I don't think the price difference worth it and I hate the sigma.. too big.. and I hate having issues with brand new lens .. I did try some samples at my local shops and they were all having issues especially at infinity focusing. The 50L would be the one, but right now, I don't have any money at all, the 35 1.4 burned my pants lol.

guess we'll just have to agree to disagree...but i'm sure there are many zooms that are better in the bokeh dept. than the 50mm...
