I agree.. amazing coming from a sub $100 lens.
this lens is amazing.. its becoming an everyday lens for me. i went to monterey this past weekend and took 900 photos, only 10 photos were taken with my 18-55 (to get wide landscapes), the rest was with my 50mm.
it used to be real difficult to frame shots without zoom capabilities, but now its becoming a lot more fun and creative trying to frame shots. :)

With my silly edit to it (Not hdr) the clarity is amazing with this lens. The original is ridiculous, just click on my flickr link in my sig to see the original.

yes white balance is off. too cyan and a little blue. also a little too dark for me. a few quick tweeks and it'll be perfect.

I couldnt find a thread dedicated to the MK1 version so please forgive me if Im out of line posting here or please direct me to the correct thread. I owned the plastic fantastic a couple years ago and it was fairly good but very inconsistent so I sold it off. Today I was given the opportunity to purchase a pristine MK1 version and brother I am now a believer. This lens is almost as good as any of the older L lenses that I have owned...and only 75.00... Im a very happy camper.

My first post on POTN, after a long time of lurking. Hopefully I uploaded the picture okay...if not, I'll try again. Flowers at the Grand Ole Opry Hotel in Nashville. Shot with the Nifty Fifty slightly stopped down to 2.0, ISO at 100, shutter speed at 1/125.

What's going on with the line around his ear and (his) right cheek? I'm talking about the dude above, not the spider.

Zoran, I feel the shallow DoF takes away from that shot, for product/detail shots like that maybe just set the lens to f/8

For cheap lenses, this is definitely the king.
But other than that, this lens' autofocus is basically hit or miss, and performance is
just not good enough fully open. Shooting stills with manual focus is probably the best use
for this lens, other than that, just use it as a stepping stone to get some good L glass.
I keep about 10% of the shots I get off this lens, and I rarely shoot anything unless
I know I want to keep it, since I'm not the type to run around shooting everything I see.
Compared to most L lenses I'd be keeping from 75%-90% of the shots.
---
With that said, here's a shot from before this retired, no processing what so ever,
straight out of RAW and into JPG through Photoshop, there's no point in showing post-processed
photos when conveying what a lens can do.

Try here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=12 for critiques. For what it's worth, go closer in #1, #2 back up a bit - get their heads out of the middle of the frame, #3 is pretty nice, #4 get her out of the middle of the frame, #5 balance them on each side of the middle, use fill flash to brighten faces - they're shadowed here (for future reference, the larger subject carries more "weight" so you'll need to emphasize the smaller subject in the frame to balance the larger). Read up on the "rule of thirds" (#1 has two good examples). Keep shooting, and enjoy!

Ok so I am still learning this and finding out this is an expensive hobby so I have a question. What is the main reason to get the 50mm? Does it depend on the type of photography? I am starting out with all of the starter lens like the 18-55 and the 55-250 so I am wondering if I should add this one or not. What shots will this lens give me that the two above won't?

The 50mm 1.8 has a large aperture (low f number) and therefore is better for low light situations or blurring the background of a subject. ("bokeh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh)"; shallow depth of field (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field)). The lower the f-stop the faster shutter speed can be set. (more light enters the lens).

What shots will this lens give me that the two above won't?
see most of the shots in this section...your lenses can't open up below f3.5...so the fifty has the potential to gain 3 stops on your 18-55mm...also at 50mm your lens is a f5.6...so the fifty is 4 1/3 stops faster...
have you had any indoor low light shots, say at f3.5 1/40 ruined by the person moving...with the fifty you could've been at f1.8 1/160...so it has a chance of stopping the motion

Shot by my g/f at a recent wedding. Quick shot with the Nifty I saw. She grew very attached to it and used it a lot.

When checking lens specs prime vs zoom also consider the lens minimum focus distance. I have an 80-200mm f2.8L and it would be just fine in place of say a nice 85mm f1.8. But it also has a minimum focus distance of 1.8 meters so it can only be used in large rooms or outdoors effectively.

Nice flower Grady. Is that just with the lens? Or did you have a macro tube or raynox attached? I used to have a raynox 250 (i think?) combined with a nifty fifty and I could get some crazy bug/flower 'macros' with that combo.

Whew. I've never read a topic so huge before!
There are really amazing shots made with the Nifty Fifty- it's a shame that some older links don't work anymore.
And yeah, this is my first post here! I decided that lurking-time was over :)
Anyways, I'm still very new to all this photography stuff- I have had my 500D for just over 2 months now, and I've got the Nifty just a few days ago. So, of course, any C+C would be much appreciated :)
