Beautiful picture. If you don't mind me asking, did you add any additional sharpening during PP? Either way, I love the effect.

If I remember correctly, a little USM after resizing, and then just a very light touch of sharpening tool (maybe 15%) around the kitten's face.

Even at 2.8, I feel like it lacks sharpness and doesnt render color all that well. Granted its sharper then any other budget lens, just not quite L sharp is all I guess.

and not quite as expensive as L glass;)

Just got mine, its sitting on the coffee table still in the box.

Woo, my first post on these forums.

My nifty fifty was my first prime lens that I got after buying a T1i this summer and at the time I thought it was great... but recently I've gotten frustrated with it as it just seems to be too narrow for me most of the time. But here are some of my favorite shots I've taken with it...

when shot wide open...or near wide open in this case f2...the blades don't come into play as much as when you stop the lens down

edit:..actually f2 was on nighthawks shot...the post you were talking about was wide open f1.8

what's your problem with the AF?

if you want to improve it throw your external flash on there and use the AF assist with the flash disabled...you should be fine in any kind of light

in one-shot AF it hunts?...

AF assist is from the external flash...it sends out a red AF assist beam which provides a spot for the lens to focus on which makes the lens focus faster in low-light...it should look something like a #, and will flash really quickly...you can use the AF assist from the flash without having to use the flash

My bike. Taken with my new 7D and 50 1.8, at f/2.2. Soft as anything in the corners (check out the rear tyre...) - I probably won't use it below f/2.8 from now on.

And i'll hopefully replace it with a 35L soon, too! ;)

Nice ride (and shot). Honestly, a studio type shot like this should be taken stopped down. Why not f5.6 for good deep dof and insane sharpness corner to corner?

Yeah, I did mess around with different apertures, and to be honest it was stupid of me not to go something like f/4 or smaller, but I was firing two speedlights into the roof and couldn't get enough power out of them both.

Now I think about it, I didn't really consider what I was doing properly. I should've left the ISO at 200 (where it was), sped the shutter up to 1/160th or so (it was at 1/40th) to get rid of the ambient, then set the aperture to about f/2.8. This would've given me a sharper, properly exposed shot while not exposing the dirty grey wall behind.

Hey all, this is my first post. Just bought my first SLR (a T1i). I'm new to photography and all I can say is that I'm loving it. I think I definitely caught the bug...within a week I already bought a grip for my camera, and now a 50 mm. This hobby is gonna hurt my wallet! haha

here's my stab at shooting with the nifty fifty:

Good thing this isn't a gun owners forum... FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER! LOL

Nice shot. I have a few where the lighting is right and you can see the rifling and firing pin (too bad they weren't with my 50mm, or I'd post them)... with the chamber empty!

Woh, freaked me out - looks EXACTLY like one of the ladies at work... long lost sisters?

How did you get such nice Bokeh? f/2 is the key?

When I had this lens, I always got a harsh Bokeh and I got frustrated and sold it.

Yep, f/2 is the key. At f/2.8 you dont get the round little bokeh's, you'll see the aperture blades.

Very nice pictures above.

I purchased used nifty-fifty few days ago. Took it for a walk last night.
I could see big difference in the night photography compare to kit lens for our 500D.
I used tripod and no flash.

HDR from three pictures.

Mostly SOOC, just adjusted shadows. I had some other awesome angles of these alligators from a split section of water and air, but the glass was scratched exactly at that level and none of the shot made the cut. Damn. This is one of the better ones shot through some thickass glass at Georgia Aquarium.

On top left you see my hand's ghosting reflection. Too lazy to clone it out. :D Shot with the nifty 50 NOT at f/1.8. EXIF intact.
