Dug this lens out of my bag (havn't used it in probably 6 months). I use my Tamron 17-50 ninety-nine percent of the time.

Its a bit OOF around his eyes. I had a single focus point on my brothers eye and looks like focus is just about the hair on his right ear. I haven't micro-adjusted it yet with the 50D.

Anywho, him hanging out in the living room with our tree in the BG.

Yeah, it was bounced off the ceiling with a diffuser on it as well. I had the flash all of an hour before taking that, so I'm still learningas well, but it's so much more of a challenge learning lighting, I love it.

I've had one for maybe a year, and I've had no problems with it. I recognise it's fairly flimsy so I take good care of it. Much as I do of all my lenses, in fact. Optically it's superb.

I totally agree on that optically it's superb for it's price.
Then again, if a lens is inside a padded lensbag and falls to the floor from barely 2 feet high and falls apart, that makes it a pos in my book.

peterbj7
26th of December 2009 (Sat), 08:38
I think any lens that falls two feet onto a hard surface, even if it is in its normal padded bag, can be expected to sustain some internal damage, even if it's not visible. When I said I "take care" of my lenses, I meant amongst other things that I don't drop them two feet onto a hard surface. Nor the bodies either.

I wonder what proportion of nifty fifties sold have at some point in their lives fallen apart or suffered some other form of catastrophic failure? I wouldn't mind betting it's a pretty small percentage. Or I would have read in the newspapers about Trading Standards departments taking an interest.

I dropped my Sigma 10-20mm about 4 feet from a table, without a padded bag, onto carpet (On top of Cement) -- And it's still going strong.

For Christmas my wife got me a nifty fifty. It will take some playing around to get used to the shallow DOF, far more shallow than my 100mm 2.8 macro. I can see that the cheap a$$ MF ring will cause me to want a much better lens sooner rather than later. It is a good thing my birthday is in 2 months!!!!

This lens is a love or hate lens. Very sharp but its autofocus is one of the worst in the Canon line. My copy furthermore, in autofocus, in the 400D hunts even when I'm not pressing the shutter and, some times, it produces the infamous error 99. Also in the 50D it most definitely, with autofocus, makes he camera to hang, up to the point I have to remove the battery to start it again (all this without any warning). So I have opted to use it only in manual focus, which it is in itself quite rewarding (that is the way I had to take every picture with my Canon AE1 Program, 30 years ago). I'm looking for a new 50mm lens (probably the Sigma 50 f1.4).
Shot and 100%crop, taken handheld with manual focusing, with the 400D, at ISO100, f4.5, 1/160sec.

Keep your eyes open and be patient. I've seen it go for a as little as $50 a few times, but it's usually around 70-80. If you want it, I would just buy it brand new since it's so cheap, but I respect thriftiness ( I am a big promoter of used gear).

peterbj7

When I bought mine new from B&H a couple of years ago, it was only $70 or so...the price has gone up since then...so, folks either bought it used for those prices or new awhile back...

peterbj7
29th of December 2009 (Tue), 12:58
I paid around $70 earlier this year, though I can't remember now just where. For that price it also came with a UV filter, critical for me here as the salt and humid air deposits stuff on any exposed glass.

Using this lens takes me back to when I started out in photography too many years ago, as the viewfinder and rangefinder cameras I used all had fixed focal length lenses of about 50mm. Having a prime lens with no options forces your eye to work better, and I reckon I took artistically better pictures in those days than now, with all these zoom lenses available.

BoingoBongo
29th of December 2009 (Tue), 14:01
I've been getting reacquainted with this lens lately and I really love it. It takes a lot of practice to get the focusing down, but it's incredibly fun to use. I was getting way too reliant on zooms for composition and this lens really helps to combat that habit.

I've tried 2 or possibly 3 Exif add-ons in firefox and I have not found one reliable yet - many I have not been able to see - perhaps 80%

Now that I think about it - I wonder if it is easier if an image is saved and then imported into a program like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, where we can easily see our own Exif data?

I'll see if I remember to do that on my own pc tomorrow...

Another stretching the limits. 5D/nifty fifty/3200. Very heavily cropped - about 1/11 of original picture

maybe not for you...but just a quick run thru noiseware(no other processing spent 1sec...probably could've been done better...but all i had was 2 seconds :))...and it's not that bad, could probably get better with other processing...plus he was maxed out at f1.8, and the shutter speed was getting to the danger zone of handholdability...so either no shot, or what you see below...i think the main killer was that it was such a significant crop

You can tell I'm a novice at this sort of thing. I started from the RAW file but couldn't see how to improve the noise. Can you tell me exactly what you did, what software, what settings, etc? If it weren't such a big file I'd send you the RAW to see if you could do even better.

So you can tell what I started with, this is a JPEG of the original photo straight from the camera. The only change is that I've reduced the size for posting. I do of course still have the RAW.

what were some typical apertures you were using for the landscapes?

I'd love to say that I did that on purpose...but I didn't, guess I was lucky

In terms of apatures. Most of the landscapes were at F8. I find that for landscapes F8 to be a good aperture. However think the car shots were more like F4.

That is just a beautiful and interesting shot!

Here are some unusual photos.

I used my 50 1.8 MKII on my 5D (original) and a 2X KEnko Prop 300 DG teleconverter.
Put it on my tripod and setup some studio lights with white box and umprella diffusers.
it was fun aiming them around for different angles of light on the subject.I did use a tripod for the camera.
I broke it into several images since there is a size limit per image.
These are about like "Macro" with this lens at the range I was about 3 feet away and the 2x tele helped.

PLLphotography

that's true....I keep forgetting about the holidays :o

I recently purchased a set of the RF-602 wireless transmitter/receiver that everyone is apparently raving about. it took over two weeks to ship them....of course that's nothing compared to your actual camera getting "taken" away for the Canon kids to play with :-(

at least hopefully by now you have gotten some type of email from them to let you know your camera is in their care/serviced.

Salma
5th of January 2010 (Tue), 22:19
Yeah it's the holidays that have ruined everything for me ARGGHH!

You know I was going insane, I kinda felt like my child had been taken away from me lol, I rang my retailer a few times to find out what's going on because I didn't send it directly to Canon, rather I took it instore to where I purchased it from and they would've sent it to Canon, when I called they said it would be delivered to them by the 30th and now it's the 6th :/ if I don't get it in 2 days i'm gonna go mad!

I was so tempted to buy a new camera for a while, i've decided I should always have a back up and maybe it's time to purchase one.

To be honest, they've been awfull, no contact, no nothing.

PLLphotography
5th of January 2010 (Tue), 22:29
that is bad....hopefully someone didn't think it was a new shipment and sold your camera (just kidding).

I started out with a Rebel XS (1000D) earlier this year, and then moved to a 40D. I still have my XS as a backup in case I ever need to send my 40D in for repairs.

Salma

It's always a good idea, while my camera was gone my cousin was begging me to photograph her party, I felt so bad she really wanted some cool shot, if I had a back up slr I would've been sorted that day :*(
