I think I have a bad copy. I've tried everything, and mine is not this sharp in low light. I've just been chalking it up to "you get what you pay for", but after seeing some of these pictures, I think my copy is soft.

I find mine soft in low light as well

I have a 17-500 f2.8 tamron that works great... any suggestions?

One is a favorite of my little one and the other just a nature thing to give you some variety. :)

hi corporation. thank you
for reverse, just turn the lense upside down, there supposed to be an adapter for this to make it easier, but with nifty fifty i find it easy to hand held the lens so that no stray light came in through the area between the front side of the lens and the camera.
I use Tv mode and set the ISO, because the aperture will show up as 00 in the camera.

for the landscape, I think it was f22, it was cold that night so i was too lazy to change to my zoom lens :) notice the croppings

No problem! :) I would have done the same thing -- you just beat me to it! The only other detail that I'll add is that I shot this with mirror lockup and with a cable release. The light in the background is the aurora borealis. The shadows on the barn are caused by the stray light of Lincoln, Nebraska, approximately 20 miles to the south, reflecting off a cloud deck over the city.

Thanks guys!

The pano is of Chicago taken from near the Adler Planetarium. I used the 50mm f/1.8 for this pic. In TIF format, the picture is around 850MB in size and around 110 MP. I recently sold the f/1.8 and upgraded to the f/1.4 because I needed the f/1.4 for Canon's double rebate. I'm really going to miss the light weight of the f/1.8 though.

This lens also takes great macros and near-macros with extension tubes:

Wow! Great macro shots! Oh yeah, the 50mm f/1.8 is nice and light. It does not look so intimidating either, it attracts much less attention than my 24-105mm.

I really love my "fifty"!

Since the 50mm 1.8 is the only lens I own at the moment, I think I may have some shots to add to this thread!

I thought this picture came out very sharp.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/liebernoodle/fl.jpg

I like this picture because it's a typical portrait with a really thin-headed subject.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/liebernoodle/fl2.jpg

Colors.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/liebernoodle/fl3.jpg

Not the sharpest most colorful shot ever, but I like it

My winnings, shot with a very shallow 1.8 DOF
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/liebernoodle/chips.jpg

These were all shot as jpegs by the way. I hadn't been turned on to RAW at the time they were taken.

Well, I'm convinced on the quality...

Before I break down and get one, do you owners think that 50mm is wide enough or would you have preferred something wider?

99allturbo, great shot. Looks like is really using the 10MP :)

4walls
15th of February 2007 (Thu), 10:04
I would prefer something a little wider, but having said that... you will not find a wider
lens this sharp and this fast for the same low cost.

This is the first non-zoom I have used on an SLR in a long time. It takes a little time
getting used to zooming in and out with your feet :)

hawk911
15th of February 2007 (Thu), 11:09
I love the crispness of the lens, and it does take a bit to get used to not having fingertip control over your zoom BUT for the price it's a great lens.

Hmmm, thats the thing. I don't want to get temped into this lens because its so good and cheap and then I don't use it.

I'll go to a shop and test it out... :)

I look at it like this: for ~$70, I can carry a great, sharp lens in my bag and not feel bad if I don't use it all the time. I would feel really bad if I spent $$$ on a 24-70 L glass lens and never used it.

4walls
15th of February 2007 (Thu), 14:44
It really is a great little lens and I can't believe how small and light it is.
Throw it in your bag and use it once in a while. It takes up so little room
and cost so little that you owe it to yourself to try it out.

If you end up not using it... there are a lot of buyers out there who like to
pick up used ones too. Just try to buy a used one... good luck with that.
I managed to find one here on POTN before the seller listed it in the market-
place section.

Anyway, I love this lense, even though the angle isn't that big, it's só sharp!

See the heading, that would be a Smithwick's. I'm sure all of us from the U.S. have made this mistake: you belly up to the bar, scan the tap handles and proudly order a Smith - wicks, only to be met with a quisical stare and the reply "did you mean Smit - icks? Oh well, I've been initiated and I couldn't be happier.:D
