Hey all,

Just got my Canon T1i in the mail today, and I can't wait to go home and try it out. I bought this lens, so I think I am bypassing the kit lens and will just put this on one first. I'm very anxious to try it out, so get ready for some shots of the cats :)

Just one question? In the second picture what did you use for lighting?

lotsofphotog
6th of January 2010 (Wed), 22:56
Natural light. First one using my 420, but I'm really really new to the whole speedlite thing. I always have shot with natural light until a week or so ago. I need to work big time on the speedlite, though I don't plan on using it much. I'm not digging the vignette.

Here's another shot. This one I'm not very fond of - the processing or the focus. My husband's eye looks really soft. It was shot at like 2.0, though, so I should have bumped it up to 4.0 or so.

ETA: Now that I'm looking at it, both of their eyes are soft. :(

Ok here's what I do.

Open pic up and tweak RAW image to where I want it to be without any processing. Then, in PS, I create a solid color adjustment layer. Pick a dark navy blue color (you can adjust it later). Change the layer from normal to Exclusion. Adjust the opacity to your desire and if you're not happy with the coloring, go into the solid color layer and change that. Voila!

So I am new to the DSLR world. I did get the kit lens, and I bought this at everyone's recommendation. Tried to take some pictures with it, and they came out ok, but not as good as everyone elses. I have a Canon t1i, and I was wondering about the following things.

1) What setting do you take these great pictures on? I have mine on the "Manual Av" setting, which seems to do mostly automatic but allows me to play with the f/stuff.

2) Do you use the manual focus, or always let it auto-focus? If it auto-focuses, it seems I can't get as close to the subject as I might like. Some of your shots seem to be very close of pets, people, etc. Is this done by cropping, or is there some trick I am missing?

3) Can you only get extremely sharp photos in bright, natural light? Or is there some trick I am missing as well. I've made the plunge, now I need you guys to help me swim!

I'll upload a picture in a second.

You should really take a class locally or online to learn about photography and using your camera for the results you want.

Maybe others can take more time to answer your questions in the other forum thready more better than this thread.

leaving the lens wide open like that is going to give you a shallow DOF...google DOF calculator, and you can plug in numbers to see how small the area that will be in sharp focus is at f1.8

this lens isn't the easiest to MF...so i use AF...as far as getting close to people i don't really understand...you were right up against that mug, which is probably smaller than most peoples faces, or pets...so you should be fine, but yes it has a minimum focus distance, and if you get inside of that nothing will be sharp

as long as your shutter speed is fast enough to stop hand shake, or stop subject motion you should be able to get sharp shots from this lens

I agree, you got here eye in pretty good focus. That close with a large aperture gives you a very shallow depth of field. Only way to get more focus in that shot would be a smaller aperture. I think it looks pretty cool as is.

I had to post it because it's the first time I've pulled out my manual lenses since I got my 5d and I used to my Vivitar 28-90 f/2.8-3.5 and I am really impressed on the clarity. see where there is a bright "highlight" separating your head from the background? that's haloing, which results from oversharpening. It gives the subject a "glow".

It's no biggie. I did the same thing when I started out, just something to watch for. :-)

yes - this is a great looking cat! Does it have some tiger in its bloodline? Great markings.

Would love to see a pic with more of the cat in focus in that sharpness.
But asking a cat or tiger to cooperate is like scupting with jello

what the heck?? I've never seen such tiger markings on a cat in my life - and not only do I see one on a thread I'm subscribed to - but 2 different people have a cat with tiger stripes on the same thread???

is this cat a certain breed?

Ok - who is going to take photos of their tiger-cat in front of jungle plants first?

Digipanther - Tehehe, I am not sure what breed of cat is it either, but one of my cousins had it for a very long time. But hell, it looks awesome :). There are a few more pictures of it on my flickr, check the sig. All of them werent taken with the 50mm though, but the 18-55mm kit lens is wonders too.

it's a bengal, they were bred from a domestic cat crossed with an asian leopard-cat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengal_(cat)
they love water, and their kittens dont 'mew' like normal kittens, they chirp like cheetah cubs or baby crocodiles, its very cute
and their fur glitters gold in sunlight - very cool cats

Added a little sharpening, yes. Had to brighten them up a bit in PS as well (and used noise ninja) -- still learning how to use my camera, so they weren't perfect. Had I known the settings to use, I am sure they would have been 100x better. Still like them, though :)

I think I'd agree - the posted pics have the toyger stripes & markings vs spots typical of a bengal or leopard, but I'm no zoologist either...

Me wants a toyger kitten!

EDIT: looked a little more via google, & I'm not prepared to say toyger or bengal. The bengal seems to have more spots yet has stripes in front and hind and around legs...
