That's the one. They just dropped the "Mark"/"Mk" when naming this thread.

It was actually completely dark out. I think the streetlamps cause that effect since it was a 30 second exposure.

Was it dark and did you have AF on? My copy hunts like there's no tomorrow in low light. It almost never get correct focus. I've found that if I burst 3 or more shots in a row I can get at least one that's focused properly.

Methodical
13th of January 2010 (Wed), 08:59
Radiohead if you are shooting at f1.8 then the DOF is very thin, even more so if you are close to the subject and if handheld in such low light any movement would magnify the out of focusness (made of up word). Try some test shots with a tripod, mirror lock and timer or shutter release cable. Here's a couple of shots with a tripod and shutter release cable...see how thin the DOF is, now imagine if you or the subject were to move or breath, the photo would look out of focus.

So consider f/2.8 or so and more distance between your subject. I'm no pro but I find many photos on this thread in focus on a 'portion' of a pet or person. In some cases its 'artisitc license' I understand. Just an observation anyways.

Hiya.

No, unfortunately I haven't got it back and i'm going insane without it, the retailer lost my camera, can you believe it? Well they said they're gonna replace it now and the lady I spoke to also said that because they don't have it in stock they're enquiring about availability at the closest currys so I guess they're gonna take another year doing that too.

Good point. But I bet after people used it, Canon would have a hard time selling many of their lenses. For my purposes, I feel the 50 1.8 II is amazing. It's just about as sharp as Canon's best lenses. I don't feel the need to upgrade it to something else unless it breaks. When it does I will buy another 50 1.8 II.

while I agree this 50 is very good for many things, it's not the end all be all of anything other then cheap 50mm lenses. :D it wont compete with a 70-200 for example based on focal length, so it wont stop the sales of other lenses that people desire.

But it did stop me from picking up a 50 1.4 or a 50 1.2L, and more than likley a 35 F2. It also stopped me from picking up a 17-55.

I had the 24-70L and traded it in for the tamron 28-75 2.8 and love it. It's not the SAME lens on the outside, but the photos look the same from both lenses.

You can pay $1400 or you can pay $450, if you need weather sealing for sure and you expect to be rough wiht the lens, getthe L, other Tamron's glass is equal and AF so close it's not worth the extra money unless your standing in the rain or rock climbing with your gear.

I have a question, I'm almost positive I'm gonna pick up the 50 1.8 but I've heard criticisms regarding it's autofocusing abilities. People say it hunts or it is too slow. Compared to the kit lens is how does it's AF fair?

CW Jones
17th of January 2010 (Sun), 11:38
It has good autofocus. It will hunt around a bit in low light tho.

TeenPhotog
17th of January 2010 (Sun), 11:41
It has good autofocus. It will hunt around a bit in low light tho.

As in concert shooting? cause that's a important thing for me at the moment.

In low light would it be hunting anymore than the kit would?

CW Jones
17th of January 2010 (Sun), 11:44
From my experiences it will hunt around yes, BUT it will eventually find the focus, or it has in my situations at least. I don't shoot moving targets in low light tho, generally just static ones so it doesn't matter if it takes its time. If I get tired of waiting for it, I let the pop-up flash shoot of a few bursts to help it out.

And no, my kit lens seems to hunt a LOT more and not always get its focus. your 5.6 on the 55mm end VS. 1.8 on the 50mm end, that's a big difference.

TeenPhotog
17th of January 2010 (Sun), 11:47
oh ok. i won't be able to use flash but it's a good point no less.

does hunt so much that manual focus is an equally effective choice?

CW Jones
17th of January 2010 (Sun), 12:19
um well it would be you hunting, and unless you have really worked in manual focus before it would be tough to just pick it up and give it a try.

TeenPhotog
17th of January 2010 (Sun), 12:29
yeah I realize, but you know what I'm saying right?

mastertech01
17th of January 2010 (Sun), 12:32
I cant quite understand why the lens always gets the blame for hunting. It is the camera that holds the sensors and electronics and the focus commands. All the lens does is resolve detail in the scene, and the photographer is responsible to ensure adequate lighting, camera stability, and proper settings. If you purchase a lens that limits avaliable light you have to compensate somewhere, either with artificial light, focus assist lamp, or switch to an appropriate lens for conditions.

I just have a hard time believing in a hunting lens. IMHO

then blame the camera haha I don't care. The main point is, yes it (camera, lens whatever) will most likely hunt around in low, poorly lit situations.

you can't aim it into a black pit and expect it to focus. You need to be able to pick up on something with some light on it at the very least. a light on a wall, or shirt or whatever your shooting at.

notfastenuf, 50mm is an excellent lens for babies photography in natural light (including indoor). Since my two boys were born, this lens is virtually glued to my 10D :)

Completely agree. I'm even testing it right now and I def don't love the crop. Unfortunately, until I get my wireless remote (which is on it's way), it's about all I can do. But, I'll be updating it soon once it's warmer outside with a normal photo.
