Iv'e never had a lens with f/1.8, what can I expect if i buy this? Lets say I take a photo with f/3,5 and a certain shutter speed and ISO and all that. What will for example the shutter speed be if I take the same photo under the same conditions (light, ISO, exposure etc.) with f/1.8?
RobinSchouten
22nd of January 2010 (Fri), 10:07
I've tested it a bit for you under poor lighting.
F3.5 gives a shutterspeed of 1/5 of a second.
F1.8 gives a shutterspeed of 1/25 of a second. ;)

Bobster, I LOVE that!!
I had a rough weekend. I'll start with happier images - these are both taken at my mother-in-law's house whom we were visiting this weekend.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4051/4301805611_ea3b27f8df.jpg
And, then while we were up visiting my mother-in-law, my dad called me to tell me my beloved best friend and canine companion, Annie, had passed in their home. She was sick with what I believe was cancer, and I had known for some time she didn't have a ton of time left. My dad, who has always called her his favorite dog, despite the fact that he has three of his own, has been very upset over her death. I've seen him lose his own father and recently battle a long fight of cancer and never once have I heard him cry near as hard as I heard him cry when he told me Annie had died. I rescued her almost six years ago from a rescue shelter when I first moved to a city where I knew no one and owned nothing. It was just me, her and an air mattress in my newly signed lease for a bit. She was an adult when I rescued her (and that's a story in itself considering I wanted to adopt a puppy and she wouldn't leave my side while I was looking), but she's been nothing but the most loving, caring, kind dog I've ever met. Honestly, my family and friends call her the "old soul" because when you look in her eyes and talk to her, she listens to you - no matter how long and often times I have felt much more like she took care of me rather than I took care of her. I will greatly miss her. Here's the last image I took of her on Jan 8:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4258764360_260f4e2d30_b.jpg
And, here's today's 2010 project image of her burial. We dug a very deep hole in my parent's back yard where she loved to be the most and this is as we were almost finished after laying her to rest:

I'd be interested in knowing what the camera settings were (including ISO). Oh, and what camera? Hand held? Just the light in a restaurant, or is this a studio/home set-up?

Thanks very much. The shot came out a lot better than I thought it would.
Camera settings:
f1.8 (Canon 50mm f1.8)
Canon 400d
1/125 Shutter speed
iso: 400
This was taken in a pub, there was a medium size window behind the food, which provided most of the light for the shot.
Editing wise:
Small amount of contrast and sharpening and increased saturation, but nothing much at all. Then adding of a vignetting to make the plate stand out more.
I have to say that I have never taken photos of food before, I do however think teh key is interesting/good light, and a low depth of field.
Hope that helps, and thanks again :)

Not a lot apart from the obvious black and white, I then played about with the curves to get the balance of tones right. All by eye I'm not a wizard with CS4 that's for sure! I don't think I did any sharpening as the shots didn't lend themselves to it. This is a 100% crop, I love this lens :)

No and I am still practicing. To nail focus where I wanted it at large apertures I finally went manual and bought an EF-S focusing screen for the 50D. Now I'm reasonably happy with the 50mm.

50mm Question:
I'm wanting to use the nifty-fifty outdoors with fill flash at F2.8. My maximum shutter speed is 1/16000 of a second but my maximum flash sync speed is 1/500 of a second. This usually means the widest I can go is about F4-5.6. Using just the shoe mounted flash is there anyway to get to F2.8 without using filters? I don't want to lose any IQ.

Would high speed sync flash work? as long as you aren't using it with fluorescent lighting you should be fine.

Canon EOS 10D gripped, Canon 50 F\1.8 "Nifty Fifty" ,now on wishlist -1) Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, then 2) Tammy 17-50 f/2.8, then 3) Canon 85 f/1.8, and then maybe 4) sigma 30mm f/1.4, and then maybe even a longer zoom
Apart from I have a 7D I'm on the same purchase plan as you it would seem! I'm now up to the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 stage, which arrived today \o/
I am also on the look out for a macro lens as well in addition to the above. Not decided on a Sigma 105, Tamron 90 or Tokina 100. Nearly bought a Sigma but when I tested it the focus was less than smooth, it had been in an accident I reckon!

I recommend the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro. It's got the best AF and is optically very good. I've had the Tamron 90mm, which was optically good, but AF was painfully slow. The Sigma macros may not have as good AF accuracy as Canon, but Sigma 70mm macro should be optically very good.
