Hey guys, how does this lens perform on FF? I just ordered it and I'm not sure how great it's going to work on FF now.
Lol everywhere I post you're there!!
On 1.3 crop (the 1d..) it was AWESOME, my friend..who owns a 30d and 5d said he loves his more on the 5d...so I guess thats all I know haha.
I love it on my 30d..I'm sure it would be great on your 5d.

As good as it is on a crop body, it's even better on a FF. It practically takes on a life of its own.

If you had come from film, you'd know that most people grew up with just 50mm available to them. Which is what this is when it's on a FF digital camera.

unless you were using a tripod you're going to have a hard time avoiding camera shake at 1/10 when using the 50mm...and even if you do manage to stay steady enough...shooting a person that might move could result in soft shots....

16th of February 2010 (Tue), 00:41

exif viewer
i use firefox...so i use a plug in with it that allows you to see the exif(all the settings from the camera)...as long as the exif is still intact it tells you everything
there are also other options like opanda if you are not using firefox

If your referring to my shot above, then thanks :D
Edit wise, not that much to be honest!
- Contrast boost a little
- Slight sharpening
- De-saturation
- Alter the Hue slightly
- Add Vignetting
That's all really, i'm using an editing software called Photoscape, this is free, and a brilliant piece of software.
Here is a few from the last couple of days as well.

I've had this lens a few weeks now and loving it!
I'm maybe half way through this thread as well. I ordered the lens after about 10 pages. Hopefully in the next month i'll finish working my way through the rest of it! Though i'm finding it a great place to come for inspiration while the weather is so bad outside.
Here's one I snapped the other night of my dog, three days after getting three teeth pulled out, this was the first time i'd seen him chewing on a bone again.
This is my first post here, so go gentle on me

Playing around with some different lighting options / ideas tonight I came up with these:
1. Lit with a handheld flashlight with a paper towel diffuser. ISO 400, f/6.7, 30s.
http://usdave1t.smugmug.com/Still-Life/Toys/IMG1957/790977936_vhHRF-M.jpg
2. Lit with a red laser pointer diffused through a paper towel. ISO 400, f/2.5, 30s.
http://usdave1t.smugmug.com/Still-Life/Toys/IMG1965/790980742_QhfJ2-M.jpg
3. Lit with a handheld National PE-201M flash (I have had this flash for about 15 years!), Set camera to bulb in a dark room and fire the flash manually below the subject. Flash diffused through a paper towel and opaque plastic box. ISO 100, f/4.5.
http://usdave1t.smugmug.com/Still-Life/Toys/IMG1992/790983461_99gXP-M.jpg
I had a lot of fun playing around with this, there are more in the series here (http://usdave1t.smugmug.com/Still-Life/Toys/11232142_7RS56#790973809_NRYrm)

I just received my first digital SLR camera yesterday afternoon (Rebel XT).
I'm using a 50mm EF (non USM) 1.8 lens I bought for a Rebel film camera about 10 years ago.
I've already taken 100 photos.
I wouldn't have taken so many pictures with a film camera due to the cost of film and developing.
Realy nice pics. I love it !

Quite a bit. For that particular shot, though? I had a 580EXII bouncing off the ceiling. I held it relatively high up, to soften it and have a more even bounce.

Love the water drop shot Mike!
Thank you!!
I was unsure of how it would come out and was very happy with the outcome.
I like how you can see the shutter blades in the flying drops.
this is a handy little lens I'm glad I got one.

It is a great lens. I'm using ot for my 365 project, and it's really testing the lens out, seeing how flexible it is, so far she's doing well

nicely done! I'm actually deciding to sell this lens to fund the sigma 30mm 1.4 =D since it doesn't see much use anymore and would prefer something wider.
I am also buying the Sigma 30mm 1.4 but keeping this lens, i'll never let it go it's my baby :p

Quite a bit. For that particular shot, though? I had a 580EXII bouncing off the ceiling. I held it relatively high up, to soften it and have a more even bounce.
ok...eventually i will learn what all this means. But i really like that pic. Kudos to you :D Thanks for the info.

How are you finding only using the 50mm?
Occasionally i find myself wanting wider, but always managed to take a few steps back...that won't always be possible mind you. Haven't found i need to crop much yet either, but that'll come i expect.

Fine to be honest. It copes very well, and as you say if you need wider, then just move back. However certainly for landscape I think 50mm is a good focal length.
I just love the lens so much, and it being small and light means I can put in in my bag when I go biking as well :D

The lens is small and light, but the body isn't! I presume you're talking about a FF body, as the effective focal length on a crop body is IMO too narrow for landscapes.
No - for biking (which I do a lot of) I'll still be taking my G10!
Though from your gear list I see you have a cropped sensor camera. Do you really find an effective focal length of 80 OK for landscapes? In film days if I could only take one lens on country walks I took a 35.

I only have a 50mm, giving me a 65mm equivalent and it is pretty worthless for Landscapes; but I don't do landscapes so that helps....

Only have a 400d, so it is quite a compact thing (obviously not like a traditional compact) So yeh, it is a crop body. I really like narrow focal lengths, and whilst yes sometimes a focal length of around 35mm (on a crop) would be nice, I think this can produce some great shots! Think you are right though, only really works with long distance landscapes, if that makes sence...
I never used to take the camera for biking, but because i'm using it for my 365 i feel I have to

It is a beautiful shot but it really appears inverted - that the water reflection is at the top of the picture and the "true" bridge is upside down.

Well, it looks like it's in focus on her hair, but her face is not. Stop down the aperture a little, get a deeper DOF. And yes, have the subject fill more of the frame.
