Few shots using 50mm 1.8II. It is quite nice lens for pet photos, indeed..at least when it comes to image quality. However, it lacks reliable AF so usually many photos has to be taken to make sure (or hope that) some of them has correct focus.

Hi Inspeqtor -

This was taken on the west face of the Mission Mountains in Montana. They are just north of Missoula and south of Glacier National Park. They are just east of Flathead Lake. Yelowstone would be about maybe 4 1/2 hours from Yellowstone.

You will definitely see a lot of cool mountains in Yellowstone and Teton. The Tetons, Beartooths, Gallatin Range, Absarokas and Wind Rivers are incredible.

Mike,

We are going to be in the Yellowstone-Tetons for only 4 days, but that is 4 days longer than we have ever been there before! On our first full day there we are going on a sunset wildlife photo safari guided tour which should be fun.

What is at Beartooth pass?

Mike55
3rd of March 2010 (Wed), 23:45
The tour sounds awesome. Can't go wrong with that.

The Beartooth Pass is what many consider to be the most scenic road in the U.S. It cuts through the Custer and Gallatin National Forest, and then drops to to the NE Yellowstone entrance. Much of the road is above 10,000 feet and there are expansive views of alpine tundra and lakes:

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=beartooth+highway&form=QBIR&qs=n&sc=4-16#

If you can't do the Beartooth, then take the Grand Teton Park Road from Jackson Lake Junction towards Jenny Lake in good light. Very impressive drive. I'd put it top three with Beartooth Pass and Going to the Sun Road in Glacier.

You might be right on the first one... If he shot at 1.8 it could very well be the case but I think the second one looks pretty soft in general.

jasongraaf

My sharpness experience is the same as zachbreaux's. The only thing that really suffers at low apertures is contrast. That being said, I rarely shoot at f/1.8.... I don't have any targets that shallow.

And FMX, try taking a picture using a tripod or a sturdy surface, manually focusing using live-view zoomed in, and with a shutter speed of at least 1/100 sec. That will show you what level of sharpness is possible straight out of camera. Then sharpen to whatever looks good at the final output size, ideally in photoshop with USM or something similar. If you don't have photoshop, DPP is OK as well.

Same with me! I usually find that if I take a few shots of the same subject, some will be really sharp, others not so...

F8 is just super super sharp though :D

Just because the Nifty Fifty goes to 1.8 -- Doesn't mean you should. I think most people who shoot with it need to stop down to around 2.8 to really see any "sharpness" at least until they get a handle on how to shoot wide open and when they should shoot wide open.

Too many people in here get the 1.8 and for some reason think they should shoot in it 24/7.

Just because the Nifty Fifty goes to 1.8 -- Doesn't mean you should. I think most people who shoot with it need to stop down to around 2.8 to really see any "sharpness" at least until they get a handle on how to shoot wide open and when they should shoot wide open.

Too many people in here get the 1.8 and for some reason think they should shoot in it 24/7.

i shoot between 1.8 and 2.2 non stop and i have turned out fantastic results a good percentage of the time.

I only use my 50 between 1.8 and 4.0, or if I can't change lenses. Above f4.0 I use my 24-105. For me it's purely a low light lens.

I just wanted the contrast between B&W (old, past) and colour (new, present), but I think I overdid the flowers!

I like the concept myself. I just think its too flat as is. Needs more contrast and maybe some vignetting and saturation adjustments to set the "mood". Its hard to convey a feeling like that unless the mood of the image matches.

You like to read more than i. :)

Well you obviously didn't understand what I was saying the first time around and I wasn't about to re-iterate.

But I guess I have to. Point I was making, was that I believe there is a science behind shooting Wide Open. Knowing when to do it and how to do it is key.

For newbie's who think they'll get sharp images by focusing on anything Wide Open, it usually results in soft images more so then it does sharp. Once you've shot with it for a while though, you do noticeably get better at it.

But between times, those just wanting sharp images without learning anything, shoot stopped down.

These two were taken with my resurrected 50mm f/1.8 which broke last summer. In trying to take it apart recently to see if I could fix it, I accidentally managed to jam it in such a way that it can now autofocus, which it couldn't do before without jettisoning the innards, and also in such a way that the lens element stays put instead of threatening to flop onto the floor every time the camera is tilted forwards. It also has a crack in the middle which is big enough to look like a piece of tinfoil. But I can still get a decent enough picture out of it if I'm careful.
